Difference between prevacid and nexium

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between prevacid and nexium

prevacid

What is the difference between Prevacid and Nexium in what it does and how it does it? Long term effects?... Is what I am feeling are effects from the aloe healing my esophagus or the medications?
There is no data that suggests a significant difference between Protonix and Nexium. Nexium is an appropriate appoach to Barrett's esophagus. Prilosec and Nexium are also very similar. Prilosec has a cost advantage of having a generic equivalent. These questions can be addressed with your personal physician or GI physician. Followup with your personal physician is essential.
I feel like it is making me more nasueas and queasy than Prevacid. I was taking 40 mg of Nexium daily and have just switched to 30 mg daily of Prevacid.
For the gastritis I tried Pepcid (extreme dry mouth and constipation gas) The doctor gave me the lowest dose of Prevacid and made symptoms worse along with fatigue and anxiety. Don't know what to try next. Have also had the same reaction with Nexium and Prilosec.
For about five days I felt normal - no symptoms on Nexium. Then I developed diarrhea, then this came and went, but the Nexium seems to be doing less well with symptoms. For most of the day my lower throat/esophegus feels very tight, although it does not inhibit swallowing at all. It just feels like there is always pressure on my lower throat/esopohogal area - juts below the adams apple. (I'm a 54 year old male). Have not yet had my Endoscopy as my travel schedule has constantly intervened.
I've spoken to the cardiologist and he says there can definately be a correlation between reflux and increased PVC's but wasn't aware of a correlation between Prilosec and PVC's. Have you heard of anything like this with other patients, Prilosec causing a big increase in the amount of PVC's? If so is there another drug that can help with reflux/heartburn that is not a PPI? I had problems with Nexium as well (dizziness and rapid heart rate) so I'm hesitant to try another PPI drug.
I think there is a difference between bowel/colon polyps which should be removed, and benign stomach polyps caused by PPIs. I was diagnosed today with a stomach polyp and told it was most likely a result of long term use of a PPI (in this case Pariet). Does anyone know if benign stomach polyps develop into something nastier, grow bigger, can be reduced by diet, or changing PPI med?? Thanks This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
I can't take Zantac because it increased my INR. I am back to Prevacid, but down to 15 mg., and hope to be able to get off that at some point soon. I think if the tendency to Afib is there, one med can make the difference. You are right, it can be a nightmare and I don't think the medical establishment is sensitive to that fact. So glad you are doing better.
I have just started reading the connection between these issues and the vegas nerve. All the doctors want to do is heavy dose the prevacid, prilosec, nexium, etc. You name it. I've tried it. The water in the morning (at least a quart)and dropping down hard on my heels, for me really works the best. All i've heard about the surgery is 90% negative. What if i really had a heart attack one day. How could you tell the difference in symptoms? A new revolutionary surgery is desperately needed for us.
It may be gentler on your system than 40mg. And you can take it AM and PM for coverage. Nexium and Prilosec are pretty much the same and you may have medical coverage for it as it is no longer under a patent. The fundamental difference is that Nexium targets one acid inhibitor and Prilosec targets two, but of the two, one is the same as Nexium.
By dinner my lover left side between my belly button and hip cramps up. I also hear and feel my dinner gurgling in my stomach. I try to have a BM to get rid of the feeling and either nothing comes out or it's very little. I also get gassy, but can't push that out either. Have you ever heard of feeling like you have to pass gas, but when you try it feels blocked and doesn't come out?
I went to and ENT he said it was gerd and gave me nexium. The next day I went to my doctor and he gave me and inhaler, benzotate, biaxin and head ache pills. But the noe of that stuff worked. after looking on the net about this type of cough and found out that its a whooping cold that I ony thought infants get but I have it. Its a very tough thing to diagnos.
I'd do a little more research before totally discounting all of the allopathic medical sciences. There is a difference between simple heartburn and acid reflux disease (or GERD). I'd check out the Am. College of Gastroenterology website for a lot of info on the different disease states.
Between four and five hours later the bowel empties - foul smelling and watery (diarrhoea) Stage 5: Faintness and cold sweats or temperature also happen just after or before bowel movement. These symptoms usually start in the afternoon and lasts throughout the night. The symptoms usually disappear quickly the following day after a good sleep.
I found some interesting information the other day-it said there is another muscular valve between the stomach and the small intestine and if there is low stomach acid in the stomach, this valve would not open to allow the food to pass ,so the food stays in the stomach longer, causing the stomach to continue producing acid .
I have posted on this forum several times in the past regarding the sphincter of oddi dysfunction. This is truly what I think I have, although I cannot convince any doctor of that! All the pain started immediately after my lap surgery for gallbladder removal (that only contained "sludge"). I am seeing my 3rd gastro doc now and he is putting me through the same "take Nexium and come back in two months" kind of treatment. The pain for me is almost unbearable.
I went to the GI Doctor and described my symptoms ..she said that they were "classic"reflux symptoms and she took me off the prevacid and put me on nexium..I thought anytime you had the sensation of food sticking or difficult swallowing they always did a scope but she said to wait 6-8 weeks ..does this sound ok? could it be because I was scoped 4 yrs ago?
what is the difference between Nexium and Prevacid? Prevacid is what she was prescribed, and she can't really tell if it's helping. Should she request to be switched to Nexium? Her problem also began with an acute pain in the gallbladder region, along with vomiting every time she ate and feeling nauseous every time she rode in a car. The pain moved and changed to a more generalized sensitivity throughout her entire stomach area.
I too have been suffering for about 17 years for what I thought and still am thinking is acid reflux. I did fine for many years taking zantac and or prilosec. I lost 55 lbs and everything went away even though I stayed on zantac because I could feel some shortness of breath if I didn't take it. I gained about 30 lbs back and this past summer all the meds stopped working. My biggest problem with my Gerd from the start is that I feel like my food gets stuck in my throat or down in my chest.

I could tell the difference between the bile reflux and the acid reflux the first time I experienced bile reflux. I frequently vomit due to my reflux - usually on an empty stomach, so it's just stomach fluids. The acid reflux was always clear mucous-like fluids without any noticeable taste. Then, one time I threw up it was YELLOW fluid and had a HORRIBLE bitter/sour taste that left an after-taste even after brushing teeth/mouthwash.
The only think I notice with the back pain is 1)that it is a searing pain in upper back, that radiates from center out, 2) That I break a little sweat (probably anxiety as I dread the pain) 3) Often I have to go have a bm 4) My upper stomach feels pressue, like theres something pressing it out ( off center to the left, between breast and belly button area) 5) when I breathe I can feel the pressure even stronger. Why what does a bloated feeling mean?
A month after treatment most of my throat, ear and sinus issues went away and I stopped the Nexium. -------------------- As to the antacids you mention -- do not take them within 2-3 hours of your ribavirin dose or the ribavirin will not be absorbed as well. You will not have this problem with PPI's like Nexium, Aciphex, Prevacid, etc; or even H-2 Pumps like Zantac 100, Pepsid, etc.
I would like to know if anyone out there has had this problem - I have a gnawing pain in the pit of my stomach - below the breastbone and about 3 inches above the naval, shortness of breath that comes and goes, but not on exertion, tired and lack energy, sometimes pain between the shoulder blades, especially when the pit of the stomach really bothers me (and the pit of the stomach pain gets worse around my monthly cycle - which is very irregular - yet the pain does not ever completely go away).
i know my body pretty well and i didn't think i had acid reflux (like the doctor said), i took the medication and it did nothing, i went back 3 weeks later and he gave me something stronger (nexium) still didn't do ANYTHING and sent me to a specialist. once i went to the specialist i had an ultrasound of my right upper quadrant because i have having tenderness in my stomach to check and see if anything was going on and blood work (which came back normal).
- troubles started with frequent loose stools in abnormal yellow and occasionally greyish colors - then had sharp chest pains, was diagnosed with a small 2cm Hiatal Hernia (and likely GERD) by GI doc after an upper endoscopy - also had some minimal rectal bleeding (bright red), GI doc did flex sigmoidoscopy, and all was normal in biopsies - dry mouth that turned into bitter taste in mouth - been on Prevacid (now Nexium) for the GERD and it seems to have helped the chest pain The above symptom
I test negative for all the foods that I know I'm sensitive to when the allergist tests the IgE responses to those foods. The difference between a sensitivity and an allergy is that an allergy wil likely kill a person, whereas a food sensitivity will only make me sick. The traditional allergy tests don't work for food sensitivities.
Be sure to take it on an empty stomach as Prilosec and Prevacid can be reduced in potency by 50 to 60% if taken with food (they always forget to tell you that part!). Try this approach for two weeks to see if that helps.
I'm going on my 4th month of this hell called acid reflux that has caused my a case of gastritis and esophagitis. I've been going back and forth between Nexium and Losec with little success and can't tolerate the nausea and diarhea from the Nexium. Losec has it's side effects too but not quite as bad. It doesn't work as well as Nexium though. Melissa, does your gastritis & esophagitis cause you nausea and burning in your stomach and burning in your esophagus?
