Difference between prevacid and nexium

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between prevacid and nexium

prevacid

Avatar f tn I've had occassional PVC's for 20 plus years. I also have Mitral Valve Prolaps. About 2 months ago I started taking Prilosec for reflux. I then began to have a huge increase in the number of PVC's. Sometimes lasting all day. I've been on an event monitor for the past 2 weeks. I didn't even think that to relate this increase in PVC's to the Prilosec until about a week ago.
Avatar m tn What is the difference between Prevacid and Nexium in what it does and how it does it? Long term effects?... Is what I am feeling are effects from the aloe healing my esophagus or the medications?
Avatar n tn I think there is a difference between bowel/colon polyps which should be removed, and benign stomach polyps caused by PPIs. I was diagnosed today with a stomach polyp and told it was most likely a result of long term use of a PPI (in this case Pariet). Does anyone know if benign stomach polyps develop into something nastier, grow bigger, can be reduced by diet, or changing PPI med?? Thanks This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn ve never tried Domperidone, but the only meds that helped me were Nexium or Kapidex taken twice daily. I tried prevacid and it was very brief because it just didn't work for me :( Also, I use to take one Kapidex/Nexium PLUS some Amitriplyn, but I knocked the amitriplyn out of my regimen. Either way, it offered more good days then bad.
Avatar n tn I have not heard of any link between nexium and cancer of the esophagus. There is a link between acid reflux and Barrett's esophagus that can ultimately turn into cancer if the condition is not controlled. That's typically why nexium is given - to knock down the reflux and control damage to the esophagus.
Avatar m tn Protonix and Nexium did NOTHING for me, nor did Aciphex. Prevacid works OK, and my doc suggested Kapidex and I took it for a month. I did about as well on it as the Prevacid if not a tad better. I think Prevacid and/or Kapidex blow away Nexium; although what may be right for me will not be guaranteed for you. My doc gave me a 3 week free-sample of Kapidex, and you take it once a day. I'm always open to trying something new.
296025 tn?1233256719 Prevacid is a Protein Pump Inhibitor (PPI) like Aciphex, Nexium and Prilosec. It's indicated for GERD (chronic acid reflux) and as far as I know has nothing to do with treating Hep C, other than if you happen to have GERD. I believe Prilosec is a generic sold OTC but not 100% sure so speak to your doctor and pharmacist regarding switching off.
Avatar m tn I know many people that suffer from acid reflux that don't have HCV, prevacid and prilosec are now OTC and work really good.
Avatar f tn Hi, I just switched from Prevacid to Nexium and within two days started to have dark stools. Have had an endoscopy, CT scan of my abdomen and also a ultra sound on my stomach. Nothing has turned up to be a problem but still the dark stools. I would appreciate someone commenting if they've experienced the same with Nexium, "the little purple pill". Thanks.
Avatar f tn An allergist recommended this and it does seem to make a difference. Does anyone else take these types of meds to control their gerd and, ultimately, help with asthma? I cannot get Protonix any longer through my health insurance and was wondering if someone took something else as effective. Prilosec and Nexium do not have as good as effect as Protonix for me. Thanks.
1569985 tn?1328247482 I had always (since I was 22) noticed a link between my stomach issues and my irregular heartbeat. I skipped the Prevacid one day, and ended up in the ER with severe heart irregularities after eating gravy from my school cafeteria (contained msg). I knew then, there was a definite connection between the stomach and heart and the Prevacid was my lifeline. When I was 31, they scoped me again and the Barrett's was gone...
Avatar f tn Yes nexium is ok to take, i hane cirrhosis and thats what my hepo ordered for me, he did switch me to prilosec only because its over the counter same as prevacid which is also ok.............
Avatar m tn I have just started reading the connection between these issues and the vegas nerve. All the doctors want to do is heavy dose the prevacid, prilosec, nexium, etc. You name it. I've tried it. The water in the morning (at least a quart)and dropping down hard on my heels, for me really works the best. All i've heard about the surgery is 90% negative. What if i really had a heart attack one day. How could you tell the difference in symptoms?
Avatar n tn For the gastritis I tried Pepcid (extreme dry mouth and constipation gas) The doctor gave me the lowest dose of Prevacid and made symptoms worse along with fatigue and anxiety. Don't know what to try next. Have also had the same reaction with Nexium and Prilosec.
Avatar f tn I took Nexium for 5 or 6 years and each day was misery with uncontrollable diarrhea, and pain. I am almost certain that there is a connection. It has many side effects, but I no longer have my pharmacy print-out of the side effects listed. My doctor told me Prevacid would not cause severe colitis, but it did.
Avatar f tn I struggled with those for almost two years. When I tapered off the Nexium meds and used a simple, over-the-counter antacid (containing calcium and magnesium) as needed, the PVCs lessened. When I ate carefully and finally stopped Nexium completely (using the OTC antacid only when needed and in small amounts) the PVCs went away completely. I've been free of them for almost two years now.
Avatar f tn My son was also on Prevacid and when they did his scope, they found ulcers, esophagitis, etc. and that was ON the Prevacid. Once we switched to Nexium, we waited about 4 months and did the scope again and everything had cleared up. If you haven't switched, try switching and see if that in itself provides any relief as Nexium seemed to work much better for us than the Prevacid.
Avatar n tn Hi Mitch: I really feel for you and can relate BIG time!!! You just have me beat by one yr. as far as feeling badly. I hope the carafate works, Is that for bile reflux?? If so it may help as I have read that (prilosec, nexium, prevacid) I think they call them PPI's dont work on Bile. What is unbelievable is if the Dr. see's the bile WHY do they always prescribe the ppi ??? Now I have learned on this board it can do more harm then good!!!
Avatar n tn I started eating healthy and it took about 1 year for me to get this under control. The nexium and prevacid did nothing for me, about 2 weeks ago my symptoms came back and I understand what your going thru. I am on a bland diet just to start.
Avatar n tn Evidently a recent study has shown that PPIs and histamine blocking medications used to treat acid reflux may contribute to bone loss. They apparently interfere with the way the body absorbs calcium, which can affect the strength of the bones and make them more prone to fracture. The study found that people who took either PPIs or histamine blockers once daily for a year or longer had an increased risk of hip fracture.
Avatar n tn t take Zantac because it increased my INR. I am back to Prevacid, but down to 15 mg., and hope to be able to get off that at some point soon. I think if the tendency to Afib is there, one med can make the difference. You are right, it can be a nightmare and I don't think the medical establishment is sensitive to that fact. So glad you are doing better.
547002 tn?1219797376 In July i was having some swallowing problems or thought i was and they did an EGD and found nothing but a VERY tiny hiatal hernia. My stomach lining was nice and pink. I had been taking prevacid for two weeks prior to the EGD due to the trouble swallowing NOW i want to stop taking the prevacid and every time i try i get really sick. I get weak, nauseaus and for a day or two i literally go to the bathroom constantly and have loose yellow stools with stomach cramps.
Avatar n tn So far I have tried Prevacid, Aciphex, Prilosec,Protonix, and Nexium. Aciphex gave me bad side effects and Nexium made my reflux symptoms worse. Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me. I was successfully treated for H. Pylori in Nov 07. Since then I have been suffering from Water Brash and now heartburn. I don't know where to turn. My GI now wants me to take Zegerid(isn't this med just like Prilosec with sodium?). Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn I had a Barium Swallow, and reflux was found, but no hiatal hernia was found. She prescribed Prevacid, which I have been taking for several months now, and said I should take a Pepcid AC before exercise. This method has been working much better than anything tried before. But I feel like I am completely dependent on the Pepcid for relief (as it gives me far more relief than my rescue inhaler). I'm not sure how much is too much of the Pepcid.
Avatar f tn Nexium is safe to use with interferon and ribavirin and will not interfere with the efficacy of antiviral therapy.
Avatar m tn The Prevacid seemed to make the GERD much much worse, and now the Prevacid seems to be doing nothing at all. I have terrible GERD. It affects me every day, all the time. What happens is, normally, my breath will be labored (being overweight doesn't exactly help the situation) my chest will feel very full, my heart will race for no reason at all during different times of the day. It flares up terrible after meals, even if they aren't heavy.
