Difference between escitalopram and citalopram

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between escitalopram and citalopram

lexapro

Avatar m tn The R-enantiomer present in citalopram counteracts the activity of the S-enantiomer, thereby providing a possible basis for the pharmacological and clinical differences observed between citalopram and escitalopram.
Avatar m tn 1 mixture of (S)-Citalopram and (R)-Citalopram]; Escitalopram [(S)-Citalopram) is a pure enantiomer. The dosages for Escitalopram are typically 1/2 of those for Citalopram, and there are fewer side effects, suggesting that most side effects come from the (R)-enantiomer.'' Basically escitalopram is the new citalopram with less side-effects and requires only half the dosage and I think it is the reason for it's cheaper price. -http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar n tn But he gave me a 6 month supply of Escitalopram (Lexapro) instead of Citalopram. Escitalopram is just the S enantiomer of citalopram, and apparently has better anti-anxiety effects. Today I finished my previous stock of Citalopram. Unfortunately, my doctor here near my flat is on holiday, tomorrow is All Souls Day which is a holiday too. The next appointment I can get is probably next week. Is it okay to switch to Lexapro? I mean, I have no other choice as of now.
Avatar n tn Your best and most accurate advice will come form your physician. Lexapro is escitalopram and Celexa is citalopram and as you see from these generic names they are similar but not the same. One difference is that Celexa is available in generic form and Lexapro is not which means theoretically generic Celexa (generic form) should be less costly. Lexapro and Celexa are not interchangeable, and they are not approved for all of the same uses. Both are approved for the treatment of depression.
Avatar f tn I was on it a good few years, then put on citalopram with subsequent major weight gain. Then trazodone which gave me palpatations as did escitalopram and had problems with others too, and prozac gave me weight gain too. Been on antidepressants 16 years or more, trying herbal antidepressants but losing my battle as my depression extremely bad just now and my fast pulse and palpatations are returning.
Avatar n tn I had a similar experience with Celexa, which is a very similar drug (celexa is citalopram, lexapro is escitalopram). I also had low blood pressure (78/58 at one point), and worsening depression, which really wasn't helpful since that's what I was taking it for. I was only on it for 4 weeks though...
Avatar m tn I have been on escitalopram / citalopram for a few years but will be switching to the above.
Avatar f tn If I remember correctly, the main difference between Celexa (citalopram) and Lexapro (escitalopram) is that the latter is as much and anti anxiety as it is an anti depressant.
Avatar n tn I was on Lexapro (escitalopram, quite similar to Celexa/citalopram) a few years ago, and was withdrawn abruptly from it by my doctors. For me, the shock sensations lasted for about 3 months, but during that period they became less and less frequent over time. It's a really bothersome withdrawal symtom, but just remember that it won't last forever. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Hi, I was started on nefazadone hydrochloride years ago, worked well but was withdrawn from the market, citalopram for about 12 years, weight gain and few other side effects. stopped working. Escitalopram gave me fast hearbeat as did trazadone, Setraline fast or slow and irreg heartbeat. Never considered effexor xr/venlafaxine as i was so put off with the reviews of weight gain and the awful discontinuation symptoms. Prozac was great but major weight gain in two months.
Avatar n tn Just wondering if anybody here has ever taken Domperidone and Escitalopram. It says in the Domperidone leaflet not to take the two medications together, and some quick research online says there is a severe interaction between the two medicines. Despite this my doctor has prescribed them both to me. 30mg of Domperidone a day + 20mg of Escitalopram a day. Should I consult with my doctor about this or will I be fine? Thanks in advance.
1001742 tn?1252685847 Cipralex is an anti-anxiety pill. Escitalopram belongs to the group of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It works by increasing levels of a neurotransmitter called serotonin in the brain. Increased serotonin levels can lead to an improved mood.
Avatar m tn Both citalopram, (Celexa) and escitalopram, (Lexapro) are SSRI's and both have, as unlabeled uses the control of panic. They both also have CNS side effects of anxiety in the beginning stages of treatment. You say you've been on the citalopram for approximately 5 weeks? It can take up to 35 days for citalopram to reach "steady state" in your blood, which means you won't begin to feel any real relief from your depresson for possibly a bit over a month.
Avatar m tn I decided to go to psychiatrist and so she saw severe anxiety and gave me ssri antidepressant escitalopram which made me a lot worse, my heart rate was 90-100 even when i wanted to go to sleep. Now she wants to put me on mirtazapine and i just can't understand how it can work because its serotonin and norepinephrine reuptaker, so how it will reduce my anxiety if i will have more norepinephrine in my blood, i thought they will block it, not increase it.
Avatar n tn I have just started taking Citalopram for Depression and Anxiety in the last few weeks. I've forgotten again to ask my doctor whether I can drink taking the medication. My dose is 30mg per day at the minute if this has anything to do with it. I don't want to go on a binge drinking session I just want to know if I can have a few drinks pints when out. Can anybody with experience of taking Citalopram help me out with whether there are any effects?
Avatar f tn Thanks, prozac and escitalopram and setraline never gave me weight gain but made my pulse race. I am now quite scared to try others. I was on 40mg citalopram for 12 years and put on over 3 stones with it in that time. I am trying a low dose 10mg to see if itll help me but not cause the weight gain.
Avatar n tn Women have a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence if they take tamoxifen along with paroxetine, fluoxetine, or sertraline... but NOT citalopram, escitalopram, or fluvoxamine. .....About 30% of women on tamoxifen also take an SSRI for depression or hot flashes. FDA will add new warnings..and Medco is alerting physicians if a woman on tamoxifen gets paroxetine, fluoxetine, or sertraline. Suggest using one of the other SSRIs or venlafaxine if needed for depression or hot flashes.
Avatar m tn Hi, I'm 62, was diagnosed bi-polar in 1986 and put on Lithium but not monitored properly so came off it after being sacked. Started again in 1990 and was also put on Citalopram at that time. Have been on both ever since and have been up and down like a yoyo, In 199I 8 I was diagnosed HIV positive, fired again. Put on meds, got lypodysrophy but thatit's a bit better now. Recently left husband, got fired (again), moved country so was pretty shattered and scattered, and angry.
950277 tn?1247274551 celexa generic citalopram and brand name cipram in the the eastern countries is produced by the same Danish company which produces cipralex/lexapro/escitalopram. In different forums one finds many pts using it. it's weaker than lexapro, exactly half its therapeutic dose in maximum and minimum. BP pts take wellbutrin, celexa, lexapro in the majority of the cases. A few take seroxat/paxil to go with lamictal.
581954 tn?1223391496 I recently started taking Celexa and I think I have a funny sinus( like I cried all day ) and eye feeling. I am stuffy and my eyes feel a little weird. Anyone else?
1166402 tn?1303847056 I went from 20mg Celexa, to 10mg of Lexapro. Celexa has two isomers, one of which is more potent (the S isomer, thus "escitalopram" instead of "arcitalopram.) (r)citalopram has actually been shown to blunt the effects of escitalopram, and that's half of Celexa. So theoretically, taking just the (s) isomer has greater antidepressant activity. You would think 10mg of Lexapro equates to 20mg Celexa, but this isn't the case.
