Suggest increasing water consummation daily, eat a diet that is higher in carbohydrates, low in fat; and restrict alcoholic beverages. Carbohydrates increase excretion of uric acid; however, high fat decreases excretion.

I dont know how high, but if it is way above 7.2 I doubt if you can blame that all on food choice and exercise. Perhaps you can opt for a second test, see what comes out, before taking other steps.
Avatar f tn proteins like fish and chicken are pure protein and are broken down to uric acid by the body. Uric acid stone form for three reasons, and three reasons alone: 1. Low urine volume 2. Low urine pH (too much acidity in the urine) 3. High urine uric acid.
Avatar n tn Kidney stones Causes Gout is caused by having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your body. Your body may make too much uric acid, or have a hard time getting rid of uric acid. If too much uric acid builds up in the fluid around the joints (synovial fluid), uric acid crystals form. These crystals cause the joint to swell up and become inflamed. Not everyone with high uric acid levels in the blood has gout. The exact cause is unknown. Gout may run in families.
Avatar m tn With a high uric acid level you should completely avoid beer and meat (produces uric acid) , as well as reduce spinach, chocolate and rhubarb (have oxalates, which can react with high urate to form bad crystals in the blood stream, leading to gout). Try a vegetarian diet for a while, rich in fibre. Good luck!

Uric acid was 7.2 and I went on a low dose of allopurinal 100mg and it dropped to 5.2. You have to keep your uric acid under 6.0 forever if you want to solve your gout problem. Doctor told me absolutely, that high cell turnover from 7 months of anemia was a major contributor of the high uric acid.
Avatar m tn by the way, i'd like to post another question i have about gout diet prevention in another forum that doesnt seem to be getting any replies, here it is: Since I heard that taking in more dairy products like yogurt, milk and cheese, combined with taking calcium supplement, can lower your uric acid levels, and thereby help prevent gout, does this mean that i can use this as a counteractive measure to balance out my overall purine intake from high purine foods like red meats and seafood that a
Avatar n tn Uric Acid connected to symptoms of cardiovascular disease, spasticity and involuntary movements of muscles, cognitive retardation (fibro fog), arthritis, kidney stones, abdominal pain, hypertension and more. These symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Uric acid is connected to oxidative stress, which is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or easily repair the resulting damage.

Shifts to greater than or equal to 12.1 mg/dL from baseline in uric acid levels were also more frequent among subjects treated with INCIVEK (7%) compared to peginterferon alfa and ribavirin (1%).
Avatar n tn I have had a 5mm kidney stone and now have about 5 smaller ones. I have started medication for prevention and been told that I need to change my diet to avoid purines & oxalic acid. I am also hypoglycemic. In researching what I can/cannot eat, I am getting conflicting information. Different websites list the content of these materials at differing amounts. The USDA will say a type of food is at 1 level and another will say something totally different.

Avatar n tn Some individuals have high uric acid levels in blood and this results in the formation of uric acid crystals in the semen. Such individuals are prone to developing gout and need to focus on a low-purine diet. High-purine foods include meat, fish, beer, alcohol, and breads made with yeast. Foods low in purine include green leafy vegetables, milk and milk products, breads that are made without yeast, coffee and tea, etc. Foods like white meat and cauliflower, green peas, etc.

Avatar n tn Sodium urate is 15 times more soluble than uric acid. When pH equals pKa (5.8), uric acid and sodium urate are present in equal quantities. As pH increases, the ratio of sodium urate to uric acid increases. At a pH of 6.8, 10 times more sodium urate is present than uric acid; whereas, at a pH of 7.8, 100 times more sodium urate is present than uric acid" www.emedicine.com/ped/topic2361.
Avatar n tn Gout is a disease hallmarked by elevated levels of uric acid in your blood. In this condition, crystals of monosodium urate (MSU) or uric acid are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Gout is characterized by excruciating, sudden, unexpected, burning pain, as well as swelling, redness, warmth, and stiffness in the affected joint. This occurs most commonly in men's toes but can appear in other parts of the body and affect women as well.
Avatar n tn I suppose I could take allopurinol to get my uric acid level below 6 but not sure of the value given the potential side effects. High uric acid is associated with development of heart and kidney problems - so it may be good to have a good diet. I try on that score with more veggies and fruit- and to drink a lot of fluids - but colchicine has allowed me to eat a burger or have clam chowder without fear of an attack. I suggest anyone out there to try the little pill and water every night.
