Diabetic weight gain type 1

Common Questions and Answers about Diabetic weight gain type 1

diabetes

Avatar n tn I desperately want to lose 30 pounds. I am a 34 year old Type 1 Diabetic. I have been a diabetic for 26 years. I feel lazy, tired and only motivated to lose weight in my mind. I have 2 young children, work full time, and I do not have a supportive husband. While pregnant, I kept my diabetes under strict control. Now, I am too frazzled and busy to do so. My A1C (s) have been around 10 for the last 12 months. I could not lose any weight when my control was good. It is still impossible.
Avatar n tn I assume you get regularly tested for thyroid to make sure that isn't the cause of your weight gain and you don't need an adjustment in thyroid meds. Insulin doesn't make people gain weight, though sometimes people lose weight when initially diagnosed with very high numbers and when their blood sugar gets under control they continue eating the same way and gain weight. Another cause of weight gain in Type 1's is insulin resistance.
Avatar n tn 4 and sensitivity of 15 points for 1 unit) I have heard that increased insulin intake is correlated with weight gain. Will taking so much insulin cause me to gain weight even though I am eating the same number of calories? I know that insulin takes sugar into your body so that it can use it for energy or store it, so i am curious what is happening to all this extra insulin i am taking.
Avatar m tn I am 21 years old, had a had a baby a year ago and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 1 month and a half ago. And I have definitely noticed a significant amount of weight gain. I am still trying to get a handle on my diabetes. I am using FlexPen and take 2 shots of 24 units a day. I am starting to get depressed by all the weight gain and even just the daily fight with my Blood Glucose.
Avatar n tn What you don't say in your post is how you eat? That is what makes you gain weight, not insulin per se! Some Type 1's assume they can eat whatever they want and cover it with insulin. So they take higher doses of insulin and sometimes even have to eat more to match the insulin dose instead of the reverse. Usually Insulin Resistance is a Type II problem but Type 1's who gain weight can also develop resistance which then makes them gain more weight so it is a vicious cycle.
Avatar f tn Last thyroid labs well within range and I'm not type 2 diabetic. I live with a type 1 diabetic so testing is not a problem. Though his insulin took him to a weight of 400 lbs. Hubby had a gastric bypass and is now 200. Adrenal fatigue....... never heard of that. All which I'm sure is costly and I am uninsured.
Avatar n tn If I followed a strict ADA diet while body building 4x a week, and also trying to gain weight by muscle…would I still reduce my chance of Type 2. Losing weight is not an option for me. Also I only average about 6 hrs a sleep for the past 5 year and drink tons of sodas.
Avatar n tn It is not clear if you are a type 1 diabetic or not... I assume that you ARE since you came to this website. If your glucose levels are as tightly controlled as possible, this makes it easier to gain weight, too, for the carbs you eat are properly metabolized when glucose levels are normal. Many type 1 diabetics find that they gain weight when their doctors work to normalize their glucose levels, and they tend to blame insulin for making them gain weight.
Avatar m tn and I know i'm a type 1 diabetic because I have been taking humalog and lantus for last 11 years and havent in the last 2 months with the exception of 1 or 2 injections.
Avatar n tn I'm newly diagnosed type 1 (see Weight gain / Best Way to Lose Weight thread for backround info), and I saw on another thread a reccomendation that type 1 diabetics avoid caffine. I've never heard this before, and I'm wondering why and/or if this applies to all type 1's, or just the person to whom it was originally written. Thanks. E.S.
Avatar n tn Try to get a pump, especially if you are a Type 1. (I am a Type 1 Diabetic.) I don't know why this is not currently the standard for anyone who takes insulin as it makes a big difference and is the most effective treatment for stabilizing blood sugars. If your insurance denies you the benefit of this after your endo prescribes on.then be sure to APPEAL their decision - they are making a monetary decision and probably are hoping you won't appeal.
Avatar f tn (by getting a c-peptide and antibody tests) as you may be type 1. Also if you are losing weight you might want to have your thyroid checked. Let us know how it goes.
Avatar n tn I am a type 1 diabetic and I have talked to my Dr about c sections and vaginally deliveries and she says our goal for me is to do it vaginally unless complications make it so I cant. but my sister in law had a c section because she had some birthing complications she wasn't a diabetic but she did it like a champ and all went well. the baby's dad even got to be in the room with her still.
Avatar f tn Two more thoughts. A lot of people don't take hypoglycemia seriously as I'm sure you have noticed over the years. I have to admit I was one of those people who thought people were just complaining. Then I was in Costa Rica with a friend and her husband. We had a hard time finding a place we wanted to have lunch and then the service was very slow so we were starving. I am a Type 1 diabetic, my friend's husband is a Type 2 diabetic and my friend also said she was hypoglycemic.
Avatar f tn Is there any pills I can take to help me lose weight I'm a type 1 diabetic
480448 tn?1426948538 Obviously, the more, the better. If you are at an ideal weight, maintain it and try to avoid weight gain. Obesity is the leading cause of Type 2 Diabetes. 2. Lifestyle changes: Get more active, adopt an exercise program, avoid being overly sedentary. Get out and do things. If you indulge in binge drinking, or drink excessively, this needs addressed. Alcohol abuse can lead to all kinds of health problems. Smoking cessation is also important, for general health reasons. 3.
Avatar n tn I am not a physician, but a mom of a type 1 child, and the daughter of a type 2 diabetic. I know that from experiences with my daughter it was hard for her to gain weight. When she was diagnosed the endo wanted her to gain 5 pounds. It took her over year. I have a sitter that is a type one diabetic, she needed to lose weight.
Avatar f tn The websites I listed may be helpful to you, for they all address this dangerous practice, which seems to be something newly popular among diabetic young women. There is a real misconception among many that insulin makes you gain weight, which is not true. Being healthy, and taking insulin to cover the missing insulin in our own bodies does not make us fat, but allows the body to use the calories that we eat. Now, to your daughter's emotional problem...
