Common Questions and Answers about Diabetic thanksgiving meal plan

diabetes

Avatar n tn Hi. Just wanted to ask a question about random blood sugar readings. We were at my parent's house Thanksgiving and my step-father is a non-insulin dependant diabetic. My kids were interested in how he does fingersticks to check his BS, so he let each of them check theirs for their own curiosity. This was right after eacting, including deserts and all. Of the three children the results were 141, 108, and 243. The 243 was my 10 yr old son.
Avatar n tn im needing to find a simple diabetic diet plan. the doctor gave me one but it seems really complicated. does anyone know any good sources for diabetic diet plans?
Avatar n tn First thing you need have on hand is a home glucose test meter. The only way you're going to know how the foods you consumed affected your glucose [blood sugar] levels is by testing, testing, and more testing. Times to test are; fasting - first thing in morning b4 having any food or colored liquids [plain water is OK]. This will tell you how much stored sugar your liver is dumping during sleep hours. Normal levels are 60/70 - 99 mg/dl or 3.33/3.88 - 5.
Avatar f tn t really want to take my newborn baby out to a family feast so for this Thanksgiving I was going to cook dinner for the first time Thanksgiving dinner and I was wondering will I feel up to it if she's born November 3rd?
Avatar m tn Sorry, a mistake. It is 6'10". My Fasting Sugar is between 110 & 125 and PP is between 135 & 160 . A1C value is 6.8. Yes, I am on balanced meal plan as per doctor's advice.
5501743 tn?1390296087 Just go by the food pyramid and try to get all the servings of everything you need a day. Definetly drink tons of water. And portion control. And you may need to snack as you get further along or with morning sickness. I was 220 pre pregnancy and I'm 40+3 now and weigh 246. Some women loose wright though with morning sickness or when you start eating better and exercising so either is normal and your doctor can tell you if something is indeed wrong.
Avatar f tn Teast before you eat Idealy your BG is under 100 (probably not if your diabetic). Count the carbohydrates in your meal. Eat. test your BG 1 hour, two hours after you eat. You are looking for BG to always be under 140 (BG over 140 causes damage to your body) or less than a 40 Pt rise in BG. If your BG rises more than 40 Pts you eat too many Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates raise BG ALL carbs raise BG whole wheat, brown rice, pasta, most fruit will raise BG.
1123420 tn?1350561158 I agree. have your own thanksgiving. You don't need to cook a big meal if you don't want to. you could even go out to eat. Just enjoy your time with the family that YOU made. If you feel obligated to go the the relatives, maybe you could just make a desert appearance.
Avatar m tn Hi, My wife was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and for some reason I got it into my head to try to test my own. Both of my parents are diabetic and I am overweight. I tested once, rather stupidly just before finishing a meal and the result was 168. I tested the next morning, about 8 hours after my last meal and got 111. I tested that day when I came home from work, about an hour after my last snack and got 90.
712314 tn?1303098090 ok, so as some of you know i was in residental treament over the summer, then i moved down to partial. ED has taken a turn for the worst. Since last Tuesday and it is know Monday i've consumed around 2,500 calories. That is less then the average american consumes over two days. This is with the exception of Sunday of binging and purging five times. In addition to this i haven't drunk water since Wed. with the exception of 4 oz at bedtime to take my medications.

Avatar n tn t think that it makes any difference whether your child eats regular meals or variable meals with snacks as long as you know how to count the carbohydrates and adjust insulin accordingly. Obviously, those who eat according to a set meal plan have their lives simplified by not having to do the math for every single meal, but some folks prefer to have the flexibility of being able to eat what they want to and adjust the insulin.
Avatar f tn You will also have to see a dietitian they will put you on a meal plan. And you will have to monitor your sugar levels four times a day.
Avatar f tn t help but think theres only 62 days until Thanksgiving.. The best meal of the year.. Am I the only one that thinks a plate with Turkey, Chicken and Broccoli Rice, homemade Stuffing, Green bean Casserole and most importantly Mashed Potatoes & Gravy sound great.. My mouth is watering!
Avatar m tn Meaning your glucose levels? What about testing at home? What are your prandial [b4 meal] and postprandial [after meal] test results? The human body is constantly changing. What you ate last month, six months ago, or last year that didn't effect your glucose level may today. In your case, you need to test and test often to rule out any foods and liquids contributing to your problem.
Avatar f tn 2 would fit you into a pre diabetes diagnosis, You should work out a meal plan with a dietician and have a watch over your carbohydrate intake along with routine exercise, metformin is relatively safe and should bring down your A1c along with a good lipid profile and no hypoglycaemia. Do have a routine checkup of fasting blood glucose , eye and urine test done.
Avatar m tn My dog is diabetic and will not eat the prescribed food. How long should I make it available for her to eat. She cannot have a shot unless she eats a full meal.
Avatar n tn Thanks very much for your answer and advice. Just took 2 hour after meal - 54. Meal was sugar free preserves on whole wheat toast. One hour was 56. Not sure what is going on. 54 sounds too low. I guess I'll just keep monitoring it until doctor's appt. in April. Thanks again.
194838 tn?1303428544 Eating meals with a known number of calories at specific times and a moderate amount of measured exercise (i.e. walking fifty blocks) , also at specific times would be ideal. Few people can do this. You have to resolve yourself to the fact that, if diabetic, you can't have whatever you want whenever you want without paying the penalty. At a senior citizen center, for example, the standard daily meal for lunch is 1400 calories.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if I will be up to making Thanksgiving dinner for 5 people. My husband is a great help in the kitchen and is a good cook. I was also thinking of enlisting the help of our dinner companions. Another question (nothing to do with dinner) - can I get a mammogram while on TX?

Avatar n tn Have you measured your blood sugar before a meal and then after the meal (usually measure at 1 1/2 - 2 hours after a meal). if your sugar is going high or low after eating this can affect how you feel.

Avatar m tn I assume you mean you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (also known as syndrome X or metabolic X syndrome by many) - if so why not go see a dietitian who deals with diabetes (just because they deal with diabetes does't mean they can't help develop a plan that will for you, even if your not diabetic) and have them help develop a plan that will work with you?
1091845 tn?1263162000 carb ratio is so that you gear your dose to what you plan to eat. If you are going low BEFORE your meal, your basal (long-acting) insulin dose may be too high. I highly recommend getting the book Using Insulin by John Walsh which will answer many of your questions. If you pay attention you may start to recognize when you are low by such things as shakiness, irritability, fatigue, etc.
Avatar n tn s on and that definitely will make a difference in how his meal plan is structured. Some insulins require a VERY strict timing, as well as quantity of carbohydrate intake. There is a newer insulin regimin called Lantus which doesn't require a person using it to eat at prescribed times as does the other long-acting insulins. For a person using Lantus, they would take that injection 1 or 2 times each day to cover their basal rate of insulin.
