Avatar m tn Avastin is NOT FDA approved, for anything other than as a cancer treatment. However, the vitreo-retinal ophthalmologists use it "off-label" to treat AMD and diabetic retinopathy. Only Lucentis has been approved for ophthalmic use and only for AMD NOT diabetic retinopathy. Although, these drugs seem to help diabetic retinopathy patients, they have yet to be FDA approved. Unfortunately the only options available to you are to pay out of pocket for the Avastin (see if your Dr.

Avatar m tn Diabetics with high uncontrolled blood sugars can get diabetic retinopathy. When your vision starts to change, it is already severe. If left untreated diabetic retinopathy will keep getting worse. An Ophthalmologist can detect retinopathy after conducting a thorough eye exam.

Avatar n tn My daughter has had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years and has diabetic retinopathy. After a series of bleeds and resulting laser surgery, she suffered a detached retina in one eye and underwent a total vitrectomy. Three days later, she could see nothing - the result, probably of an infection. She was treated with antibiotics and steroids, but her sight never fully recovered and now a fluorogram confirms that she has lost blood supply to approximately 25% of the retina.
Avatar f tn Group II included 9 patients, 5 were not diabetic or hypertensive (Group IIa) and 4 patients were diabetic and/or hypertensive (Group IIb). 344352 tn?1605238012 Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes and the longer the duration of diabetes, the higher the risk. If her diabetes is well controlled (HbA1c <7%) there is a much lower chance of developing this problem. If caught early, treatment is excellent and it should be very manageable. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Hello and thanks so much for your response. I am currently seeing an opthalmologist who has diagnosed the retinal damage. She feels it happened because of an interruption to the blood supply to the retina. I'm not hypertensive at all, and I'm not diabetic, nor do I have cholesterol problems. The retinopathy has happened very suddenly. I did take hydroxychloroquine for rheumatoid arthritis, but stopped it at six weeks due to the developing blurry vision.
Avatar m tn At one point I had so many exams that I asked the cataract surgeon if I need to do my annual eye exam for diabetic retinopathy as well and he said no. So, I am not really concerned that I currently have issues, unless they are caused by an excessive number of dilated eye exams. Going forward I will have to figure out how I can get OCT exams. With our health system in Canada I probably will need a referral to get in to see an ophthalmologist that does them.

1761834 tn?1315837826 In studies including a significant number of diabetic patients [5,7] diabetes mellitus has also been associated with retinopathy. Furthermore, improvement of retinopathy is delayed in hypertensive and diabetic patients after ending treatment [7]. This relationship emphasizes that IFN-induced retinopathy can result from physiopathological mechanisms in common with other retinopathies related to microvascular abnormalities.

Avatar f tn You are type A so do some internet research on the different forms of diabetic retinopathy, how laser works (simple its heat and it burns and kills tissue and creates scar). At your age you likely will not further treatment (whatever it may be better treatment is being developed) down the line. Look also at symptoms people complain of after laser. There are numerous complaints of holes in vision and field defects after laser treatment on this website also.
Avatar f tn t discovered (even though she had seen an ophthalmologist for years for myopia) until the capillaries blew, causing the same effect as diabetic retinopathy (minus the diabetes). As a result of not getting proper eye care, she's pretty much lost the sight in that eye. Perhaps you can find an ophthalmologist in your area who specializes in retina care.
Avatar n tn If I remember correctly, there is a possibility it can. They usually will want to do eye testing and monitoring before and during tx. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will soon chime in.
Avatar n tn It seems to me that rather than “ranting,” your time would be better served trying to book an appointment with an ophthalmologist to check your eyes for diabetic retinopathy which is the more likely cause of your decreased vision especially in the setting of recent cardiac procedure which carries with it fluctuations in blood sugar, pressure, and oxygen levels which could lead to a rapid worsening of diabetic retinopathy.
