Avatar n tn I am not a physician, but am a long-time type 1 diabetic, diagnosed 34 years ago. I can only answer from my own experience, both as a chld and now as an adult, but several common-sense things come to mind. Avatar f tn By measuring your blood sugar response to different foods (test 2 hours after eating) you can work out which foods elevate blood sugar levels (Keep maximum blood sugar levels less than 140 (7.7), but even better if you can keep it below 100 (5.5). Exercise can also help you body to respond better to insulin and take up and use sugar in your blood. So a brisk walk for 30 minutes after eating could be helpful...
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor to refer you to a diabetic dietician to help you understand about diet. The types of foods to avoid are those that are highly processed and have high quantities of sugar. Be aware that low fat foods do not necessarily mean low sugar. It is still very important to have a healthy and well balanced diet and to choose the types of foods that slowly release energy in your body. For example, sugar foods will spike your blood sugars very quickly and then drop very quickly.
Avatar f tn Her mouth would become dry and sore, and she would never enjoy her foods, because the feed would always be down the tube. What else could she enjoy, if no longer this? However, if she carried on to eat there was the risk of developing pnuemonia because of aspirating foods and liquids into the lungs. I do no know what the extent of yours mothers condition was as stroke effects people in many different ways and is such a complex thing.
Avatar m tn And according to a recent study, diabetics are in short supply. The problem is, loading up on thiamin-rich foods, such as navy beans, spinach, and peas, doesn't do diabetics a darn bit of good. In this study, researchers discovered that the concentration of thiamin in blood plasma was decreased 76 percent for type 1 diabetics and 75 percent in type 2 patients. But the problem wasn't caused by a lack of thiamin-rich foods in the diet.
Avatar m tn Do not base your nutritional plan on the Glycemic Index or Glycemic Load. What the GI or GL fail to mention are carbohydrates. Carbs are quickly digested. The easier a food is digested the quicker its sugars enter your bloodstream. Type 2 diabetics must pay careful attention to the amount of carbs eaten. Consider carbs as an equal to table sugar. On nutrition labels carb sugars are listed in grams. Every 7 grams equals one heaping Tablespoon of refined sugar.

Avatar n tn Pizza and french fries are prime examples of foods that do this to me... I have learned that for ME, if I eat those foods, I need a small amount of insulin at mealtime followed by the rest of my normal dose several hours later, for the digestion time is really slow for those foods. I do better with lower-fat meals so that the digestion time can be predicted and insulin absorption matches it well.
