Avatar f tn I have type 1 diabetes, and have had this challenging disease for 30 years. I am believing that I may be having the first signs of some nerve damage and am wondering what doctors/specialists I sure see. Right now I have a family practioner, and have had this same doctor for years....any suggestions on where to go next? I have excellent insurance (not always the case) and want to take care of this before the situation gets worse? Help.
Avatar n tn Markie is also correct that we still do not know enough about how type 1 happens. Probably type 2 as well. We do know that obesity can diffently cause type 2, while you will find type 1's, upon diagnoses usually experience weight loss and is not associated with obesity in any way that I have ever heard of. There have been recent studies that have created a gray area between the two regarding age and developing diabetes.
Avatar f tn I have had type 1 for 11 yrs now and I am 22. I just found out I am pregnant.we didn't plan to get pregnant until October.( one year of my a1c being in range). Avatar f tn This research really tends to reinforce some other research that is being done now in three hospitals in the country. One of the research sites is the Texas Diabetic Institute in San Antonio, Texas. This is human testing of a protein that, when injected into lab mice, causes them to grown new insulin-producing cells. These studies were started on human volunteers about 2 1/2 years ago, but no results have yet been published. Too early.
Avatar n tn Hello again, Over the years, I've read all sort of unusual stories about herbs and supplements having some amazing power to relieve Type 1 diabetes. Each of those stories is quite scary to me because I'm certain that some folks actually *believe* them and may jeopardize their health & safety by using them.
Avatar n tn You might also contact the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org and click on the link to the left of the home page that is for the Online Diabetes Support Team (ODST). A page will appear where you can give some contact information and ask your question. They can put you in touch with the staff member who handles all questions of this sort and who has lots of information that may be helpful about where to go for help.
Avatar n tn I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1? Hearing the words Juvenile Diabetes associated with Type 1 throws me off obviously because I was not diagnosed as a juvenile. But also the words Insulin Dependent are associated with the Type 1. So I DO fit into that category.
Avatar n tn Hi, I just want to know if anybody out there knows of something or someone that will get ride of Diabetes Type 1?????? PLease let me know if you know somthing, anything about getting rid of it!

Avatar n tn My 20 year old son has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He had trouble controlling it for about 6 months-- up to 500, etc. He is extremely responsible and tests often and takes 4 insulin shots a day. Here is the question: He has had a spinal fusion due to very severe scoliosis. He is a chef on a cruise ship and stands for 12 hours at a time. About a month ago he started taking vicodin for back pain.
Avatar n tn He said it was 5.1. Which is low for a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed with diabetes 6 yrs ago, I am 26 right now. He said all of my blood work was absolutely perfect, cholesterol, liver enzymes, etc. I am currently taking 70/30 twice a day 10 units each time. He suggested that I lower my dosage. My question is that with my Ha1c being so low is that normal for a diabetic? He seems to be in shock. I lost 10 lbs recently too. He said he has never seen bloodwork so perfect for a diabetic.
233488 tn?1310693103 Several people have posted frustation about the lack of things that can be done to stop myopia from progressing. There is much research being done on this in asian countries as myopia-high myopia is much more common in asians more than 50% in some groups. This is a promsing PRELIMINARY STUDY that appeared in Ocular surgery News November 10, 2008 "Pirenzepine gel slows myopia progression in children".
Avatar n tn She is God given to me, but she is a diabetic type 1. She has had it since 12. I am hurting for her because everyday i see her have to go through this awful disease. I can't possibly watch her go through anything bad with this. I have heard all about the average life span of people with this disease from people living 40 years old -90 years old. They all say take care and monitor it good and you will be ok.
307500 tn?1302116146 Says because I have Clusters of AutoImmune Diseases I most likly have type 1 diabetes. This week He has run lost of test, blood, and heart tests and blood flow. I have been put on every poral pill and it hasn't dropped my BS. MY lst A1C was 7.0, I have been on a very low carb diet for yrs, I think if I weren't my BS would be alot higher all the time. Avatar n tn I'm just curious if Type 1 and polycystic ovaries come hand in hand. from what I've read, polycystic ovarian syndrome can cause type 2 if left untreated. I'm a little confused, I'm getting checked for POS, but I was diagnosed with type 1 over a year ago (when I was 23). Could there be anything other than POS?
Avatar n tn Hey! I am 22 with type 1 diabetes. I was just diagnosed two years ago. My concern is this: I am getting married in December, and have been wanting to lose weight, but can't seem to find a way to get it off! Interestingly enough, I was scouting the web to see if there was anything on this topic, and found the message posted by lyn01 -- Funny, but I am having the EXACT same problem! I exercise five times a week, with both cardio and weight training.
Avatar n tn Hello, I am wondering if dyslipidemia is as much of an issue for type 1 diabetics as it is for type 2's. The minute I was diagnosed and got the blood glucose controlled, all lipid counts were good. Type 1 is not a result of "metabolic syndrome" and I don't see as much emphasis on statins in the Type 1 forums.
Avatar f tn Appt meant for a totally unrelated cause, and I left with him being tested for Type 1 diabetes. Being a typical mom, I am worried sick. So I figured I could get a little info here. They tested him because while at the appointment I mentioned that he seemed to have lost a lot of weight recently. I wasn't sure if maybe he was just growing taller or was getting skinnier. They measured and weighed him, and then compared it to his visit at the end of September (last time we had been there).
Avatar n tn Hi Dalki, Yes, in time your doctor will likely know for sure which type of diabetes you have. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2, there seems to be a type 1.5 ... tho' there's some thought that 1.5s are just in the early stages of Type 1. We DMers (folks with diabetes mellitis) and our docs often call that a honeymoon phase. I hope you're feeling better now that your bloodsugar has begun to come down. Things may remain volatile for a while, so try to be patient with yourself.
Avatar n tn I would recommend that you connect up with your local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) who sponsors this forum. JDRF was founded by parents of Type 1 and is aimed at finding a cure for diabetes & its complications. ALong the way, they are an enormous support network for newly diagnosed, or newly-scared and stressed folks with diabetes.
Avatar n tn I have had type 1 diabetes for 10 years for at least 3 years have been suffering cfs type symptems, swollen glands, headache, burning eyes sensation and generally feeling awful from head to toe.I was also found to have low cortisol but when i had the synachtathan?(i know its spelt wrong)test my stress response was normal. Also i had low testosterone which has now been rectified, non of this has helped.
Avatar n tn To my knowledge, there is noone in my family that has ever been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, only my grandmother that was diagnosed with Type 2 when she was 50. We just got married this year, and are eager to have children. I am desperately trying to collect information on the risks of having children under these conditions, but have not been able to find anything satisfactory.

Avatar n tn Researchers had found 2 chemotherapy drugs that caused a reversal of the autoimmune proscess that causes type 1 diabetes. The research is still not in human trials, but the drugs are FDA approved, so this may help speed things along! Do your research people!!!!
Avatar n tn I have a three year old with type 1 diabetes. His sugars are just so out of whack lately. He complains about his head, eyes, stomach. I took him to GI specialist and they prescribed zantac he also takes zyrtec for allergies. I am not able to concentrate at work, not sure how well daycare does with his sugar levels, afraid he is there and not feeling well.
Avatar n tn I am 24 years old and have had type 1 diabetes since 1 1/2 years old. I have been on the insulin pump for 4 years now and have experienced much better control....still not where it could be, but way better prior to the pump. Recently I have found myself wondering what is wrong with my memory. I have trouble remembering most of my childhood or even events that happened months ago. I can only truly remember portions of conversations I have. My boyfriend tells me all the time....
