Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes type 1 and insulin

diabetes

Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes ..We tried the oral meds for a bit and eventually had to move on to Insulin shots twice a day...Well I started an insulin pump when my son was born in 2003. I have been on it ever since. I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1?
Avatar f tn Yes. Someone with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily and monitor and control their blood sugars very well if they are to stay alive and avoid complications of diabetes.
Avatar n tn herringv, I need to do some research to answer your question, so pls check back, too. Some medications seem to make us more (or less) sensitive to insulin; other meds can affect our appetites and interest in food at all. While I'm not a physician, what I know of most folks with Type 1 diabetes, it is not a disease that can go away without a transplant - and that's not an option for most (research will hopefully change that reality for us).
Avatar f tn Hi, what is the problem for applying your diet? The best diet is low carb diet. This means you need less insulin and your blood sugar is easier to control. Are you taking MDI (multiple daily injections)? DO you know your basal and bolus rates? Ie. how much insulin you need when you don't eat (basal), and how much insulin to inject for how much carbs? And then how much insulin to use for corrextions in case you are high? Using Insulin is a great book, also Think Like A Pancreas.
Avatar f tn I recently was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, will I ever be able to eat whatever I want again? If so, how long do you think that will be, I miss my chocolate!!

I have been put on every poral pill and it hasn't dropped my BS. MY lst A1C was 7.0, I have been on a very low carb diet for yrs, I think if I weren't my BS would be alot higher all the time. My ? is could I be type 1 because of all the Auto disease and the age of 16 diagnoses?
Avatar n tn I am a long distancer runner training for a marathon. I have lived with type 1 diabetes for thirteen years. I use the Bernstein dietary regimen and "exercise technique", which consists of eating small amounts of dextrose while running to compensate for the hypoglycemic effect of exercise. The aim is to keep blood sugar normal at all times. It works. Google "Bernstein diabetes" for the book.
Avatar n tn Hi Dalki, Yes, in time your doctor will likely know for sure which type of diabetes you have. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2, there seems to be a type 1.5 ... tho' there's some thought that 1.5s are just in the early stages of Type 1. We DMers (folks with diabetes mellitis) and our docs often call that a honeymoon phase. I hope you're feeling better now that your bloodsugar has begun to come down. Things may remain volatile for a while, so try to be patient with yourself.
Avatar n tn My godchild is Type 1 Diabetic she is 5 years old and she is on humalog and protafyn. Her sugar spikes a lot then it is high in the 20 reading and then she is low. What is the cause of the spiking. She does not take any sugar onl 1 canderel tablet.
Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosised with Type 1 Diabetes Aug 2008. We have learned how to inject insulin and check her blood sugar numbers. We keep her on a pretty strick diet to ensure that we keep her Blood Sugar Numbers between 80-180. The past two days she has been very low. We have tried to make sure that the insulin that we give her is only enough to cover the food that she has eaten. However, just today, she woke up with her blood sugar #s at 64. She ate about 32 carbs for breakfast.
Avatar n tn I also noted the JAMA reminder/caution that food does not cause Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. This study and others looked at the impact of specific foods/timing of introduction in at-risk children. Please know that Type 2 is a completely different disease than Type 1. Type 1 is autoimmune, and researchers are striving to find out what triggers (or doesn't) trigger the disease. Type 2 has completely different origins.
Avatar m tn What you don't say is if your friend is on insulin and if she counts the carbs in her meals to ensure she is taking the correct doses. If she is, and monitoring her diet than she should be able to control her numbers much of the time. There is no permanent cure for diabetes but the correct use of insulin is the way to keep it under control.
Avatar n tn Jen, Hypoglycemia is not the same as diabetes, but they both have to do with insulin and blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is different from Type 2, too. As I understand hypoglycemia, it is the condition where a person produces TOO MUCH insulin in response to glucose. Type 1 diabetes is often called Juvenile Diabetes because most folks with it are diagnosed before adulthood.
Avatar n tn Endocrine - produces insulin Exocrine - produces digestive juices Pancreatic disease(s) may affect the Endocrine making it not produce insulin as in type 1 diabetes. If you have your type 2 diabetes under control and no other issue with your pancreas, would this come into play? Only a doctor can answer this. Perhaps a forum member has had this happen and would enter a thread on their history.
Avatar m tn Sorry to inform you but it is still an automatic disqualification :(. In 2010 I was told by a recuriter that it was a no go for me. One thing that surprises me is he told me that if I was a Type 2 and on pills he would sign a waiver. Since I am a Type 1 and NEED insulin to survive he couldn't help me. It's sad but any job that puts other people lives at risk we can't do ex: military, pilot, and even some law enforcements. With the law enforcements it's up to that department.
Avatar n tn My 13yo son Sean was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes nine months ago. He is also significantly ADHD, requiring daily medication in order to be able to function socially and academically. We have found that the ADHD meds and the insulin are difficult to schedule because the ADHD meds suppress the appetite, and now that he has diabetes, he cannot skip meals.
Avatar n tn I have a friend whose husband has type-1 diabetes. He is in his early thirties and had a job for 3 years in which he had to drive around town. His blood sugar dropped one day when he was off work and he had an accident and lost his drivers license.
Avatar n tn I am an adult with type 1 and I am about to embark on my first international travel since I have had type 1. There are so many restrictions with carrying food on board, liquids, gels etc. I have spoken to airlines and they can't tell me the finer details - they just say I need to get a letter from my doctor. I need to carry food items with me at all times and am feeling very anxious about going through security procedures.
Avatar m tn Vitiligo is unlikely to be cause by insulin but could be related to type 1 diabetes, both being autoimmune in nature. I would suggest consulting a dermatologist for suggesting an appropriate management plan. Hope this information is helpful. Take care!
Avatar f tn I'm 29 and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 18 months ago. it has been extremely difficult to lose weight since I got on insulin. i am on lantas/humalog and exercise regularly. If I work to reduce my lantus dosage while maintaining a proper blood sugar will that aid weight loss? Does anything out there help to boost metabolism in diabetics? Frustrated! Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Avatar n tn There are more than 1 antibody to test for, and also some other tests to define between type 1 and 2. Dinner persons with type 1 are apparently antibody negative. Your presentation doesnt appear typical for type 2. Please see what your endocrinologist says. Regardless, if insulin is what works then don't be concerned to take it. Let us know what happens with your endo visit.
