Your doctor's advice is surprising to me, also. I'm guessing that s/he is not a diabetes specialist and that's the type of physician who should be guiding your diabetes care. Specialists might be called endocrinologist or diabetologist.
None of us here is a physician, but we're long-time diabetics or care-givers for diabetic children.
You didn't mention if you've been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2, and the treatment options vary for these types.
She never mentioned anything about insulin and that's because she has Diabetes Insipidus, which she clearly stated. Diabetes Insipidus IS NOT Diabetes Mellitus.
With restatement of those principles the most common thing would be undiagnosed and/or out of control diabetes mellitus. Spasm of accommodation could cause those symptoms but its very very rare. Less common in 18 year olds: strokes, subdural hematomas, intercranial hemorrhage, myasthenia gravis, 6th cranial nerve paralysis/paresis.

I see you have the word 'diabetes' crossed. Diabetes is a Greek word meaning large amounts of urine. Both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus fall into this realm but both are separate mechanisms.

The swelling of feet could be due to water retention as in low protein in blood, kidney problems, severe anemia etc. It could be due to hypothyroidism too. Diabetes Mellitus too can cause similar symptoms. The diagnosis and further tests will depend on whether the swelling is a pitting edema (causes a dent on pressure) or a non pitting edema.

Without examination confirmation of a diagnosis is tough but frequent urination(polyuria) can be due to diabetes mellitus. Other possibilities are diabetes insipidus, glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis(inflammation of the kidneys),urinary tract infection, hypercalcemia, hypokalemia(low potassium),hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism and diuretic drugs. Also UTI’s need to be evaluated. For this is suggest you to consult a physician and get urine culture done. I hope it helps.

What is the cause of peripheral nerve damage in the feet? Have you been evaluated for diabetes mellitus? Chronic uncontrolled diabetes can cause peripheral nerve damage and symptoms of loss of sensation, altered sensation like tingling, numbness, paresthesia or motor loss of function. You need to be evaluated for nerve damage, pressure on nerves, pinched or entrapped nerves. Sometimes chronic vitamin b complex deficiency particularly B12 can cause peripheral neuropathy.
I have also been diagnosed with IGT, which can be a pre-curser to diabetes mellitus. I also had gestational diabetes during both my pregnancies (albeit never at very high levels).
With all the above problems, I am obviously concerned that I might be showing signs of a cardiac problem. Can anyone out there advise me, or tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree.
