Sorry, just realized you already mentioned he was tested for diabetes. I encourage you to look up diabetes insipidus, though, just to see if that seems fit his symptoms.
I would put my bets on the hernia...that when he lies down, it moves in a way that rubs a nerve or a muscle that is interpreted as a need to pee.
She never mentioned anything about insulin and that's because she has Diabetes Insipidus, which she clearly stated. Diabetes Insipidus IS NOT Diabetes Mellitus.
I know this is an old thread but can Diabetes Insipidus really cause generalized edema? Most if not all doctors seem to think it doesn't from what I've read online.
My diabetes insipidus is controversial. One doctor says that I have central diabetes insipidus and others, eg. the latest urologist, say that I do not have it.
Because doctors did not search the cause years ago, I think that it is not important. The condition has been intermittent for many years and thus may not be serious.

Yes, these are all symptoms of type I diabetes in children. My child was wetting the bed, extremely thirsty all the time and was vomiting; his vomiting, we think, was contributed to a stomach virus he had at the time. We took him to the ER due to dehydration -they did a blood chemistry and his blood sugar was 399-they immediately admitted him to ICU and he was put on IV insulin. He's been a diabetic now for 3 years-he's now 9. He's has handled it amazingly well!
m getting a little concerned about his size and not growing very much. He was tested back in the spring for Diabetes Insipidus for drinking so much water and it came back positive. My child eats and eat and eats but gains nothing... Could both of these issues, Diabetes Insipidus and lack of growth, be something more and maybe I should bring something up at his 2 yr appt in a month?
Sounds like Diabetes insipidus to me. This is caused because your pituitary gland is not making enough Anti-diuretic Hormone. The medication used for this is called Dessmopressin or DDAVP. It is available in a pill form, nasal spray or injection. There are a few other conditions that can mimic this so it is important to get it ruled in or out. I have this and without medication I am also up every half hour drinking and peeing.
t restrict fluids before you have a bunch of tests done. If he does have diabetes insipidus, and it sounds certainly like he does, he will dehydrate VERY quickly and become a medical emergency.
Children with diabetes don't pee so much because they drink too much; they drink so much because they pee too much.
I would call the specialist back again, and make it clear how much he is drinking and peeing -

About 4 months ago we began to notice that our 2 year old was drinking a lot of water. I was getting up 3-12 times a night to refill and give her more water. I gave it a little time thinking it had something to do with her teething (2 year molars). After a while, I mentioned it to our pediatrician at her 2 year checkup. She didnt seem worried about it, but it progressed to the point where I was getting her water all day long and then all night long.

Without examination confirmation of a diagnosis is tough but frequent urination(polyuria) can be due to diabetes mellitus. Other possibilities are diabetes insipidus, glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis(inflammation of the kidneys),urinary tract infection, hypercalcemia, hypokalemia(low potassium),hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism and diuretic drugs. Also UTI’s need to be evaluated. For this is suggest you to consult a physician and get urine culture done. I hope it helps.
I guess your vet is suggesting using the DDAVP (Desmopressin) inhaler as eyedrops. From what I can tell, this stuff runs about $78 a bottle (less if you get more than one bottle).
I am kind of confused as to why you are being prescribed DAVPP for nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, because that's usually prescribed for CENTRAL Diabetes Insipidus, caused when the pituitary gland doesn't secrete enough ADH.
m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Have you had the hypoglycemia test or diabetes test actually done? The symptoms are there, if you haven't done those tests, I'd recommend you get them done right away to ease your concerns. The celiac test can be done as well, but many endocrinologists will recommend to test for diabetes or hypogylcemia first. Good luck.
