Diabetes insipidus and urine specific gravity

Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes insipidus and urine specific gravity

diabetes

Avatar m tn I see you have the word 'diabetes' crossed. Diabetes is a Greek word meaning large amounts of urine. Both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus fall into this realm but both are separate mechanisms. This forum deals mostly with type 2 diabetes, people who have high blood sugar levels [mellitus]. Diabetes insipidus is kidney related. For best answers, the forum to post on is Kidney Disease & Disorders.
172023 tn?1334672284 It would not hurt to test for diabetes insipidus either. Diabetes Insipidus can occur with other diseases and is very controllable with Desmopressin Acetate. The cognitive disorder drug Anipryl can also be helpful for polyuria/polydipsia (excessive drinking and urination) as it's side-effect. Another uncommon possibility is psychogenic polydipsia and just means that your dog may have a behavioral drinking problem.
Avatar f tn Doc narrorwed it down to diabetes insipidus or neurological (meaning she's neurotic). We have to test specific gravity and go from there. If it's normal, she's doing it to herself out of boredom. Ugh.
Avatar n tn Well, I had a similar thing going on with my dog, but it appears to have resolved itself right now. If you have hot weather, and your dog has also been exercising hard, then you can expect she will drink more. Also if she has been fed anything which is salty..... BUT...suddenly drinking a lot more can be a sign of many things. Has she been spayed? If not, it can be a sign of the dreaded Pyometra. Unusual, but not impossible in a 4 year old.
1310148 tn?1273684199 Since your father is overweight this could be a case of low sodium due to increased volume of water in body. If the urine specific gravity is low then diabetes insipidus should be thought of and tested. Second possibility is hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency and even pituitary suppression. Your father needs to consult an endocrine specialist. Take care!
9644933 tn?1407768890 Diabetes insipidus, a rare form of diabetes, will also cause pets to produce a urine with low specific gravity. This disease is usually due to a failure of your pet’s pituitary gland to produce the hormone ADH. I suspect you would already have seen other suspicious symptoms before now though, so I doubt this is a cause of the lower-end sp gravity.
Avatar f tn t need my ddavp pill anymore is because he said my sodium level has never went low (I think he said it gets either extremely low or high when you have diabetes insipidus). I also went for a urine test called urine specific gravity right before I take my next dose of the pill. He said it came back fine/normal-which I think ment my urine was fine without the pill.
Avatar f tn Antidiuretic hormone (ADH or vasopressin) is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland. ADH deficiency is known as diabetes insipidus. Symptoms are frequent thirst and urination. Treatment is desmopressin (synthetic replacement for vasopressin) - taken 2 to 3 times a day.
Avatar n tn high specific gravity means high specific gravity, protein in the urine is a different measurement that is easily checked. Traces of protein are of no concern and often mean many things other than kidney disease.
Avatar f tn She never mentioned anything about insulin and that's because she has Diabetes Insipidus, which she clearly stated. Diabetes Insipidus IS NOT Diabetes Mellitus.
Avatar f tn Specific gravity is different for everyone and is higher when you aren't drinking and urinating a lot, once you loom at enough cups of urine you can usually call gravity by the color and clarity before you even test it lol.
Avatar m tn I think I have mild diabetes insipidus. In tests my nocturnal urine volume was about 1.5 liters (up to 5 times of urination).
Avatar m tn Adding a complicating wrench into everything is the fact that she was diagnosed earlier this week with Diabetes Insipidus, and has numerous issues with keeping her sodium levels under adequate control (they have been persistently in 171-176) and maintaining an appropriate fluid balance and replacing her excessively high urine output.
Avatar n tn Can there be a relationship between the tow (a fib and diabetes insipidus?) I am 50 years old and otherwise healthy, exercise regularly, eat well. Any info out there?
Avatar n tn Get your blood sugars done and if they are normal you need to get the specific gravity of your urine tested which would throw more light on your problems. Are you on some medications which lead to dry mouth and make u pass more of urine? Let me know. Keep me in loop. I hope this advice is of some help to you as of now. Regards.
Avatar m tn The latter is often treated with just a daily medication, in the morning before breakfast is my experience. Diabetes can be very difficult and may be the problem behind infections, how is you blood test results, especially white blood cells? If the WBC count is low you will likely not be as resistant to health problems as one with normal WBC counts...these are the cells that fight infections and disease.
Avatar f tn Could both of these issues, Diabetes Insipidus and lack of growth, be something more and maybe I should bring something up at his 2 yr appt in a month? The doc does want to retest for the DS but it was hard enough not giving him anything to drink for 12 hours espcially at bedtime when he brings 2 sippy's to bed with him when he was first tested in the spring.
Avatar f tn Diabetes inspidus – this is diagnosed by getting the urine specific gravity tested as in this the urine is more dilute. In this the concentrating ability of the kidney is lost due to decreased absorption of fluid from the kidneys. Excessive intake of fluids or the use of drugs like diuretics can also increase the volume of urine. There are some salt wasting kidney diseases also like Bartter’s syndrome which can cause the increased volume of urine. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
Avatar n tn They test your urine to check if theres any sugar or protein in your urine. For diabetes and such. Just ask your doctor if your worried. But drugs no....
Avatar f tn Does he seem to drink water constantly and cannot go anywhere without water? If so, it could be diabetes insipidus, which is VERY different than diabetes mellitis (Type 1 or Type 2). If not, then it could be a number of things, such as an enlarged prostrate or something else impinging on the bladder and creating a sensation of needing to go, even if the bladder is empty. It could be a problem with the nerves or muscles that connect to and control the bladder.
Avatar n tn Diabetes insipidus(water diabetes) is due to a hormone lacking that helps us hold onto water, these children will urinate excessively, drink excessively, lose weight and be sick with high sodiums, there is a form due to the pituitary hormone lacking and that which is due to the kidney not responding to the normal hormone. It does not sound like repeated fevers alone is diabetes insipidus.
Avatar m tn Is there a medication for Diabetes Insipidus other than Desmopressin? The headaches as a side affect are dibilitating. This discussion is related to peuatrygland diabetts.
