Avatar n tn Hi there...a lot of veterinarians have issues with long term usage of steroids in dogs or cats. There is the possibility that continued use of prednisone can cause overactive adrenal glands resulting in too much cortisol in the body (this is one of the body's natural steroids). Since steroids suppress the immune system, llike zodiacqueen has mentioned, chronic recurrent infections can occur.
152660 tn?1291755571 Hi there, Okay, I have a few questions to ask you. How many cats do you have ? How old are they? How long have you had them? We have a cat too who is very good at climbing. You mentioned putting up a baby gate to keep your cats and the dog you're thinking of getting apart. If your cats are as good as my cat as climbing, this won't work. Cats can climb baby gates. We have tried putting a baby gate up at the foot of the stairs. We live in a townhouse.
Avatar f tn Your dog will have more energy, arthritis will be less of a concern, even cancer rates are lower in lean dogs and cats. Good luck.
Avatar n tn s the most important thing when it comes to food production (cows, pigs and chicken mostly) and to pets health too because a bad diet causes tons of problems in cats and dogs that go from vomiting to hair loss, anemia and even death.
4105307 tn?1369531432 s is a rare disorder of cats, with less than 100 cats ever reported. As in dogs, most cats have the pituitary-dependent form of hyperadrenocorticism, but cortisol-secreting adrenal tumors also occur in cats with some frequency (1,3). Many of these cats develop mild diabetes secondary to insulin resistance. With treatment of the hypercortisolism, the diabetic state may be reversible in cats with Cushing's syndrome.
Avatar f tn I have a mixed breed dog and is too noisy and till I know cats and their stool is very harmful for the baby in me. Is it same for the dog? Should i stay away from my dog?
1994268 tn?1329466212 White dogs (and cats, as well as horses and cattle who have white faces) are more prone to squamous cell carcinomas (skin cancer) from exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Other color dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors sleeping on their backs also develop these cancers on their bellies because the relatively hairless area is exposed to the sun when they lay on their backs to sleep outside. So it's not the fact that your dog is white that makes him more susceptible to cancer.
996946 tn?1503249112 We live in the country and have cats that stay outside. The dogs are fine with them and never chase or bother them. A few months ago I rescued a stray cat that turned out to be pregnant. The dogs are fine with her. When the kittens were 3 mo old I put them outside. For a couple of weeks, things were fine. Then I looked outside and what did I see but a dead kitten in the yard. I knew it had to be the dogs, no blood, probably just shook it.

Avatar m tn I began smoking cigarettes and moved into a place where I could definately tell that I was allergic to cats and dogs in the environment. I began taking Zyrtec for my allergies. On March 13th I got sick. I got dizzy and nauseated, throwing up, skin flushed, sensations of having a fever without temperature, thick clear mucous, bright light sensitivity, sensitivity to loud sounds, rib muscles pulling, sensitivity to cold, pain in upper left abdomen, sharp chest pains, and tremors.
Avatar f tn I got the bad news yesterday she has diabetes. She has lost no weight, and the only symptoms she was showing was the water and urinating. Is it somewhat easy to help them maintain? I hate to see her go thru this, but I'm going to learn all I can on this disease and how to care for her. I pick up the insulin and food for her today. Does anyone here have a diabetic cat? Wish me luck.
Avatar n tn she would get hot alot and I would put her in the tub to try and cool her off.. and thats when I noticed her hair was really thin.. almost bald.. she was a yourky so, I couldnt see it when her hair was dry. and it ended up with Cushings Disease I was too late with the results. I just want to wish you the best for your little one. I hope they can stick with yours and give it some more time. I had very little time left with mine.at that point.. she just got really too sick.
Avatar m tn I hate seeing him this way, he seems to get around but he looks so pitiful and wobbly and he seems hungry all the time. I try wet food in the mornings and hot dogs in the day and evening he loves them but lately he has not been eating his dogs either and losing more weight.
Avatar f tn They have a little dog who they say is incapable of going outside so it just pees and poops all over. The stains are horrible and so is the smell and we had to stay with them for a while. It was disgusting waking up and stepping right into some pee! Couldn't walk barefooted. They refused to use puppy pads so I bought her puppy diapers... They weren't very happy with me lol. If smells get to you, get a mask.
1101325 tn?1321253073 but my vet said it was only feline 2 feline,so really just wanted 2 no if others have had this uri with there cats and how there cats did and if it is true with out a doubt that this is feline 2 feline
1563533 tn?1345366296 I would really love to have alot of plants in the house but Im afraid my sweet curious cats will eat it and get sick, I have two indoor cats and I havent been about to have plants in the house before they always eat them, how can I keep them out of it! Also what is the best "cat friendly" plant to have in your home?
Avatar n tn In fact if you are able to do all that I have listed cats seem to do a bit better in the long run than dogs. The only problem with cats is that it is hard to get them to take the herbs. Pill pockets help, if they like them. The appetite stimulant: Mirtazapine is even more effective in cats than dogs! But you must have a prescription. The dose of Mirtazapine for cats is 1/4 of a 15mg. tablet every 3 days.
Avatar f tn with any external product you do realize that a cat will lick this and internalize it....cortisone can cause many long term effects such as diabetes in cats. and indigestion of products containing zinc oxide can be poisonous...read down this link. http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/toxcat/toxcat.
549511 tn?1271775930 my cats begs at the kitchen like the dogs.... and scratches at my door when its closed......
Avatar f tn I have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 very healthy children and one on the way. This is what seems to work best for me and my girls. Good luck!!!
Avatar m tn As STD's are only contractable by sexual activity (except for things like HIV and Hepatitis, which can be contracted by blood-to-blood contact....and are not strictly STD's anyway) -then I would say dogs and cats cannot catch a human STD. Also, although there is a feline form of the HIV virus, and a canine form of Hepatitis, these viruses are different strains to the ones which cause the human form of the diseases.
Avatar f tn I voted for dogs, but cats are right up there too, in fact, dogs would be favorite A and cats favorite A1. LOL. Dogs are so loyal and loving, cats, on the other hand act like they could care less, but, they give them self away by purring, they are both terrific. I love ALL animals though, my next favorite after doggies and kitties is the horse, I love them, I used to teach riding when I was in high school.
Avatar m tn As to the connection between diabetes and cataracts , I have never heard of this. Our Sammy used to eat Purina Diabetic food for cats when he was diabetic and even after he was no longer diabetic. Now he eats a dry food produced by Medi Cal. I've tried to give him some wet Medi Cal canned food as well as the dry food ,, but he just turns up his nose at the canned Medi Cal Calorie Control Food. Perhaps another fur baby parent can provide some answers about the cataract question.
Avatar n tn At the same time, you should avoid all contact with cats and dogs and be aware that cat dander may linger in a given environment, for up to 6 months with routine cleaning. Also, during this period, you should seek appropriate therapy for the asthma. If the asthma persists despite good control of the reflux, the avoidance of cats and dogs and good asthma therapy, you might then want to inquire about skin tests.
Avatar f tn The vet board is going to be your best bet for this, because steroid use in dogs is a touchy thing. Cats tolerate steroids MUCH better than dogs do, dogs are prone to developing diabetes, liver problems and other things from constant use of steroids. While cats can and will develop these problems as well, it usually takes a much longer time for it to happen in cats than in dogs.
