diabetes

775732 tn?1246125144 You are exactly right, those are signs of hyperthyroid disease and diabetes. These conditions are more likely in cats that are over 7 yrs old. Both of these conditions are very treatable and your kitty should be fine!
Avatar n tn The good news is that these signs are more common in dogs than cats, but some veterinarians are just reluctant to take the chance with long term use of steroids. Check out www.aerokat.com to see a version of a feline "inhaler" I hope this helps!
4105307 tn?1369531432 s is a rare disorder of cats, with less than 100 cats ever reported. As in dogs, most cats have the pituitary-dependent form of hyperadrenocorticism, but cortisol-secreting adrenal tumors also occur in cats with some frequency (1,3). Many of these cats develop mild diabetes secondary to insulin resistance. With treatment of the hypercortisolism, the diabetic state may be reversible in cats with Cushing's syndrome.
Avatar f tn By the time the glucose overrides the kidneys filtration system and shows up in the urine, your dog would be showing signs. More importantly, speak with your vet about weight loss strategies. Like in people, diabetes in pets can usuallybe prevented through maintaining a proper weight. Your dog will have more energy, arthritis will be less of a concern, even cancer rates are lower in lean dogs and cats. Good luck.
5591135 tn?1380168056 As our house cats come from a species that originated in the desert, in nature they would get their water from their diet. In nature they would rarely even get the opportunity to actually drink water. This is why it makes sense to feed the cat as close to a native diet as you can. I'm not sure why there are still so many vets who even recommend dry kibble for cats. It's really not a well-meaning cat owner's fault when their cats get sick.
Avatar f tn s very active. STEROIDS are NOT good for cats. they can lead to many long term problems, even 1 dose can lead to DIABETES in cats. Is the Vet prescribing this for some sort of pain control, for inflammation? There MUST be a a very good reason for wanting a kitty to take this medication. I will send you a link to a website for more info on side effects. keep in touch. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/prednisone.
1979418 tn?1432135441 No talking sensse into her, so she decides they can live in her mini van... she diappears again, drives to my sister in law work where two cats apparently jump out the window, so we are down to 9 cats in the cat van parade.... She ends up back at my aunts and spends the night there, cats int he van and I am able to arrange with animal control to investigate. But, they get there and can't seize the cats cause its on private property.
1460724 tn?1285932386 She lost weight and I took her to the vet and was treated for urinary tract infection. Ever since that time she is now the most aggressive of all the cats (as I come in the house, she is waiting there MEOWING at the top of her lungs). She no long hides, she appears to be always hungry and her preference is canned food and IAMS hairball dry food, she is thin, but still very active, jumping, chasing things and will nip you if you don't pet her when she wants.
Avatar f tn yes please do check out that very informative site....this Dr. Pierson gives really indepth info also instructions on how to do home blood glucose monitoring...anyone with a diabetic cat needs this as their bible:)) Pip....I just re-read Dr. Piersons site...and she has it written right there that a low carb diet has reduced or eliminated the need for insulin...I will copy some of the studies she has quotes...great job papa cat!!!
Avatar m tn This all started when I took in 2 kittens from a lady who has passed them around to a few houses trying to get a cat to nurse them. My cats did so I kept them. There were no signs because their eyes were still shut. Now that they have opened the two I took in have it the worst and online it says its from being to a lot of different homes with different bacteria. I cant loose my two momma cats or have them wind up blind PLEASE HELP I CANT AFFORD A VET!!
Avatar n tn I wish I could remember it!!! GGRRR!! I think it's a new thing, though. I'll ask my mom, one of her cats got 2 shots of it! Can you add any details of your cats symptoms? EVERYTHING, including the little signs that you think might not matter. How long has your cat been on clavamox? It'll take at least 2 days to see improvement. I also did a little research, since I don't know much about leg weakness in cats and saw something about diabetes.
Avatar n tn Bad breath can be an indicator for an oral infection or abscess. There might not be any overt signs; but if it's spreading badly it would explain the symptoms. It could also be a sign of a stomach ailment. Even a solo indoor cat can pick up a parasite infection, it's actually not uncommon. Look in your cat's mouth for any signs of dental issues and take a close look at his stool (although that won't necessarily tell you if there's a parasite, depending on the type).
Avatar f tn In Type 1 diabetes the signs and symptoms are usually very obvious and develop very quickly, typically over a few weeks. The symptoms are quickly relieved once the diabetes is treated and under control. In Type 2 diabetes the signs and symptoms may not be so obvious, as the condition develops slowly over a period of years and may only be picked up in a routine medical check up. Symptoms are quickly relieved once diabetes is treated and under control.
1232362 tn?1333135406 Hi my cat has arthritis in both his back hips and legs and was showing slight discomfort in some movements I bought him a Bio flow collar which was quite expensive at £30.00, but the change in his mobility is amazing and he shows no signs of discomfort, obviously it won't cure him but it definitely eases any soreness he was in.
460185 tn?1326077772 If S wants my cat's number then that means he wants to get my already maniac baby involved in world domination. I'll look for signs in the house, like hidden walls or secret passages. No wonder Abby keeps following me!! He wants to know my location at all times...our cats are spying on us!!!! There's no privacy anmore!!! Wat can we do?
Avatar f tn Their eyes are clearer and our older cats are playing like kittens again. In the beginning we slowly added this to their Science Diet Dry food a little at a time. This is a dry food with moisture in it and gluton free (be sure to get the gluton free stuff)! It is much more expensive, so much worth it! One of our cats had dry fur that shed all the time and now he never sheds except during the season changes and his fur is soft and it's just amazing! Good luck!!!!
Avatar f tn s Office not long ago and was in good condition...no signs of anything being wrong (by exam and blood work - check up). However, this just began over the weekend. It is very strange. Any ideas why he would be doing this? There are other cats outside living between our house and the neighbors. We feed them. Cats seem to find our house (they must talk to each other and let each other know we are nice and will feed them, even if we go broke). Thanks ahead of time.
Avatar n tn Kidney issues tend to lose their appetite. Diabetes tends to be in obese cats and also sometimes lose appetite or vomit right after eating due to high blood sugars. Although all the diseases here have similar symptoms, unending appetite with extreme weight loss despite eating is the "tell tale" of hyperthyroidism. However, only bloodwork can confirm it and distinguish it for sure from the other two as every kitty is different.
Avatar n tn Yout vet IS right, high protein diets will harm you cat's kidneys...but the thing I don't get, you cat is diabetic or you're just scared that diets with carbs will cause diabetes?? Because it's not carbs that cause diabetes, it's a really high sugar diet that causes it in animals, commercial food have just the carbs and proteins and fats that your cat need (the good ones, of course there are some brands that can damage pets).
Avatar f tn s were that her adrenal glands looked smaller on second ultrasound and her blood had begun to show changes in her elecrolytes--in sodium and potassium levels and in cortisol. An ACTH test confirmed the diagnosis. She had to be hospitalized while treatment is begun, but her prognosis is good. I hope this is helpful to other dog owners out there.
223237 tn?1302188391 You do need to keep a close eye on her for signs of diabetes, as steroids do tend to cause diabetes after extended use , however cats are MUCH more tolerant of steroids than dogs are, and most of them respond well to the depo-medrol when it comes to the IBS. If the IBS is severe, she may need a shot as often as every 30 days, however if it's a milder case, you will only need to give her another shot when the constant diarrhea returns.
Avatar m tn At your cats age, if this is a new problem, he is probably ill. My last cat, was a good cat all his life until he started having litter box issues. Eventually he died from a large tumor that was affecting his being able to urinate. He also had a neurological problem that may have contributed to this behavior. Old age stuff. Observe your cat to see if there are any other signs of change. It may be the beginning of the end.
229538 tn?1300377767 hi...I wouldnt be concerned if she's peeing only the 2-3x per day esp since she is eating dry food like Jade said this will make kitty's more thirsty just b/c the food is so dehydrated. I will send you a site, I don't agree with your Vet at all abt ok to feed dry food. read the following site..and what this very knowledgeable Vet has to say abt dry food diets and all the health problems associated with it..
