diabetes

Avatar f tn I just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes.... anyone have any information? Will this harm my baby?
Avatar f tn Brought our 15 yr old min-pin cross, Tess, to the vet last August after noticing she was losing weight & wasn't her usual 'bossy' self! She was diagnosed with diabetes. Spent a week or two having the vet check her blood sugar at various times of the day. The vet requested we administer 2 injections a day of 6 ml canine insulin. We've followed this regimen faithfully ever since. After a month or so, she was so much better.
2065896 tn?1373685384 We even sent to America for Benadryl and that was useless. The Vet says if she continues to use prednisone the dog will get diabetes. Unfortunately she has now the pot belly of Cushing's disease and is always hungry. Has anyone else out there got this problem or know of something we haven't tried? She is a 6yr old Lhasa Apsos.
Avatar f tn kidney disease is largely managed by diet, but diabetes is influenced by diet - so treating one will affect the other. I feel you are probably right. Any dog with these two illnesses is unlikely to last very long. I wish I could say something more positive. If I were your dad, I would take things day by day, make sure the dog had everything it could want and while he's contented and happy, fine.
810096 tn?1238856679 I see no difference ini him except this wetting problem. He is just tje sweetest dog and I know its not a spite thing with him.He really had a look on his litle face as though he was lost. I need help.
Avatar n tn He may have to be on a prescription or bland diet for the rest of his life. Diabetes should only be an issue if he develops chronic pancreatitis for a very long time. Eventually enough islet cells are damaged that insulin can no longer be produced. I doubt that has happened yet with such a fast recovery, and it may never happen. My aunt had a mini schnauzer who lived over 18 years, and most of those years included chronic pancreatitis with a few acute attacks requiring hospitalization.
Avatar n tn The average dog drinks 3 to 4 cups of water per 20 pounds of body weight per day. So as a simple example, a 60 pound dog would drink between 9 and 12 cups a day. If your dog is drinking way more than he should be and you find yourself filling his water bowl several times a day, a visit to the vet is DEFINITELY in order since polydipsia (increased thirst) is a symptom of several very serious diseases. Increased water consumption is usually the first symptom noticed in diabetic dogs.
Avatar n tn My dog was diagnosed in August 2008 with diabetes. His symptoms were increased urination, increased thirst, and hind leg weakness. His initial bloodwork showed elevated glucose (450), elevated platelets and liver enzymes, and a high WBC. His liver was also enlarged. We started him on Vetsulin and an antibiotic (because of the elevated WBC), and continued his regular diet of Science Diet adult maintenance. His dose of insulin is 8 units BID.
931246 tn?1297902651 Well, to be honest, it could be. You won't know unless he is properly checked. Dogs with well-managed diabetes can live a perfectly good life and very often just as long as they would without the disease. Of course, this depends on the dog's general condition and fitness apart from the diabetes.
Avatar f tn I’ve done a lot of research about smells when it comes to hair but it doesn’t smell “cheesy” or like “wet dog” or any of those things. It just smells REALLY sweet, especially when wet. What could be causing this sudden change?

1404300 tn?1281299312 He also believes that what was first diagnosed as diabetes may also be related to the extensive steroid usage. I would like to change her diet and feed her home cooked food. I am sick of pumping chemicals into her. Can anyone offer me advice?
Avatar f tn What did Joey ever do to anyone to deserve this? Do I let my dog go blind because there is no hope for him anyway? Help me understand!
Avatar m tn It is possibly diabetes. Please take your dog to the vet. Dogs do very well adjusting to a sense taken away.....unlike people. They compensate very rapidly and do fine. However, YOu need to find the underlying cause as to why this has happened and get the necessary treatment. " The leads me to believe your dog can adjust to blindness, and the reply above suggests diabetes which is another match.
1608992 tn?1318720055 unfortunately now she is at the age when she requires more senior care and perhaps diet....what is the holistic diet she is on? I agree the excessive drinking can be a sign of diabetes, that along with increased appetite can also be a warning sign of Hyperthyroid....both are not uncommon with age. I would have her tested for both. Feed her a high quality can food, with her loss of teeth it will be difficult to chew anything else.

868616 tn?1239866236 Wouldn't it be beneficial to have a diet tracker so one could the relationship to weight, diabetes, sleep or any one of a number of other conditions and variables. It needn't have every food in details but cover groups of foods.
Avatar f tn We have an 11 old American Pit. I was feeding him two cans of dog food a day, 1 am and 1 pm. He gained 17 lbs on that diet, (what a shock that was), anyway his vet had us change to dry food, 2 c in am and 1 c in pm. That seems too little to me. Tyson is not an overly active dog. Thank you for your time.
6326336 tn?1380345254 It goes without saying that a change in the weather, particularly high levels of heat, can cause a dog to drink more. Equally, as your dog is now indoors more and has less freedom to go outside and get fresh air whenever he wants, the heat of your apartment might be an issue - particularly if you are controlling the environment with central heating and other forms of heating and/or air-conditioning. That's probably enough for you to think about for now.
Avatar n tn Dear winkster, Actually a diabetic diet is really only what a healthy diet would be for people without diabetes. And fruits are a part of that even though they have sugar it get metabolized like any other carbohydrates.
Avatar n tn Yes, I had the same problem and it turned out to be pancreatitis. It sounds like your dog's pancreas has been "touchy" for quite some time, and now it's gotten worse. If that's the case, your dog may need intensive in-patient care with NOTHING by mouth for a few days to allow the pancreas to rest. This condition is very painful as well, so pain meds are a must. After the acute phase is over, you'll have to keep your dog on a low- to no-fat diet, and NO people food.
Avatar f tn No but b glad... means ur diet is working.
Avatar f tn It's very normal. I have gestational diabetes and I've gained 12 pounds and I'm almost 36 weeks pregnant. If you're following your diet, that's why you're not gaining a ton of weight. Only be concerned if your doctor is.
