Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes and insulin and weight gain

diabetes

Avatar n tn Funny, I posted a similar e-mail 2 weeks ago. But I have to say that insulin does cause the person to gain weight and age does not help either. I got that information from Kaiser Permanente's web health library. I began to gain weight when a was placed on 4 shots per day. In addition, I also have to take neurontin which also has weight gain as a contraindication. So, inform your self by researching the contraindications of insulin as well as checking on all your meds.
Avatar n tn Hi Nisha, I'm not a medical professional but a volunteer on this forum with a similar story to yours. I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 18 (that was over 11 years ago). I too struggled at first with insulin doses (which I also tried to adjust myself), trying to understand carb counting, etc. And I too gained wight steadily for years. I know how frustrating it all can be but trust me, what you're experiencing is very common, yet it doesn't have to be this way.
Avatar m tn Therefore low cortisol (as does high cortisol) can make you actually gain weight. In addition, it also becomes more difficult to follow fitness and weight loss routines as a result of fatigue and lethargy induced by low cortisol levels. Hope this helps, Jorden Immanuel www.adrenalfatiguecoach.
Avatar n tn After giving birth, the gestational diabetes took a respite for 6 months and then my sugars shot up and I lost 30 pounds hoping to avoid insulin but I ended up on insulin anyway. I kept off those 30 pounds and was at an average weight until I started Lantus and now I gained back all that weight. While doctors will tell you it's not the insulin as they don't want you to stop taking it, I do believe some insulins (like any medication) have side effects.
Avatar n tn these comments are very intresting and most are very aqurate in relation to management and signs of weight gain. i have been juve diabetic for 14 yrs and i cant put on weight, and ive started weight training. i would like some feedback from any one in my situation..whose actually gained weight constantly... help.
Avatar n tn I assume you get regularly tested for thyroid to make sure that isn't the cause of your weight gain and you don't need an adjustment in thyroid meds. Insulin doesn't make people gain weight, though sometimes people lose weight when initially diagnosed with very high numbers and when their blood sugar gets under control they continue eating the same way and gain weight. Another cause of weight gain in Type 1's is insulin resistance.
Avatar f tn Some people think that insulin makes people gain weight, but that is not true. CALORIES are the problem. Before the diabetic person is put on insulin, the calories you ate did not properly metabolize, and now they do. The other issue is that high blood sugar levels create a situation whereby the person may start to burn off some of his or her own body fat because the body is not able to use the carbohydrates eaten for energy... the fat cells in our bodies are our emergency energy source.
Avatar f tn Why exactly does this medication cause diabetes? I was told that it cause weight gain, and it was the weight gain which cause diabetes? But I lost 40lbs and my glucose numbers worsened after a year instead of improving. What does that medication do concerning glucose tolerance????
Avatar n tn this starts a vicious cycle of more insulin, more carbs and of course weight gain. You want to lower your carb intake as low as you can and lower your insulin dose accordingly. To do this you need to figure out your insulin:Carb ratio. Some doctors put their patients on set doses or sliding scales for their mealtime insulin and this also leads to weight gain. I recommend the book Using Insulin by John Walsh which teaches you to use insulin:carb ratios.
1039200 tn?1314912008 Yes atypical antipsychotics do cause metabolic imbalances that can lead to diabetes and often cause weight gain. That's why yearly testing as regards blood sugar levels is generally a good idea. If a person develops the signs of diabetes (as happenned to one person I knew) a specific regimented diet can stop this from happenning. That's why its good to keep track of it.
Avatar f tn This is only if you DO have gestational diabetes but the diet should be followed.. too much sugar Wcan cause baby to gain too much weight. I had an ok pregnancy and my daughter is beautiful and amazing. Congrats .take it easy and try not to.stress just enjoy the pregnancy.
605458 tn?1539228808 Where does this fall in eating disorders? I do this all the time. I know it is gross, but is it dangerous in any way? I have read that stimulating insulin and not swallowing the food can cause diabetes. Is this true? Because I have never heard of one person developing diabetes from chewing and spitting food. Wouldn't chewing and spitting food be better than binging and purging?
Avatar n tn 4 and sensitivity of 15 points for 1 unit) I have heard that increased insulin intake is correlated with weight gain. Will taking so much insulin cause me to gain weight even though I am eating the same number of calories? I know that insulin takes sugar into your body so that it can use it for energy or store it, so i am curious what is happening to all this extra insulin i am taking.
489891 tn?1209058786 Ok I am a some what new diabetic released from the hospital 10-20-07 and because of diet, weight, and stress. I was working way to many hours and eating whenever I could. I have to go on a very strick diet and for the first month i lost month and a half i lost 15 pounds. Now a year before the hospital my weight was close to 400 when checking in to the hospital i was 280 and checking out i was 300 lbs.
Avatar f tn Hi, For type one diabetes, insulin dosing can accelerate weight gain. On the other hand insulin is essential for your health and well being. Thus you want to use the minimum effective dose of insulin so that your blood sugars are kept normal for health, and your insulin levels are not excessive. I am type 1, I find that eating a low carb diet (I follow Dr.
Avatar n tn I find that when I gain weight that is put on as fat tissue, my absorption of insulin and matching dose to food intake gets all out of whack. Fat tissue is much more difficult for insulin regulation as it is insulin resistant and when I take more insulin instead of using exercise to cover BG, sometimes it backfires.
Avatar f tn I couldn't lose weight with hyperthyroidism due to insulin resistance (high insulin means the body is in fat storing mode). I already had severe insulin resistance due to eating a high % of refined sugar in my diet (I do not overeat due to a poor appetite) but hyperthyroidism worsened my insulin resistance further and I also developed pre diabetes due to hyperthyroidism as well.
Avatar m tn BTW. I used to be a personal trainer. If you are weight training for 2 hours a day and concerned with diabetes, I'd change your split and do about 1 hour a day. After an hour of heavy weight training, your testosterone will lower, and cortisol will raise to give you energy. Cortisol screws with insulin, and raises glucose levels. So if you eat a revovery meal after with carbs, and that cortisol is still in your systems, it will spike blood sugar.
Avatar m tn I was on Byetta for 1 and a half and kept weight down and was put on oral meds and my levels was still in 400s thats when I start Lantus. I can't deal with the weight diet exercise does not help. What should I do.
Avatar n tn I very recently started taking my insulin again, and i eat a lot, but dont gain weight. I took blood tests and everything came out good, except for my Blood sugar of course, its too high. Could this be the cause of my weight loss? And my yeast infections? If so, how can i get back on tract? has anyone been trhough this? I know i need to cut down on the sugar, i eat way too much fatteing food, but never gain weight. I realy wanna get my life back together. Thanks for any advice.
Avatar f tn Less lows = less need to treat and risk of overtreating; Plus avoiding the cycle of more insulin to cover more food and needing more insulin, etc.) However, my thoughts are only theory. If you send me a PM I will give you the name of a website with a lot more diabetics and many of them on pumps. There is even a separate pumper's forum. I'm sure you will get some good input there. One more thing I noticed re-reading your post: Are your Bolus doses fixed?
Avatar m tn Hi, I am 28 years old now, but was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes when I was 22yrs old. The Type2 Diabetes is where the person has a lot of weight gain and has developed Diabetes from the weight gain, but can be controlled. Type 1 is totally different. I was in great shape too. It runs in my family so that's probably why I have it. (bummer) It was really hard for me to control my blood sugar, as at first it was always high! If you still get on here and have questions, let me know!
Avatar n tn It is also a new practice (Joslin diabetes center - one of the world'sleading diabetes management and research centres) to start all persons with diabetes on insulin instead of oral meds. Glipizide is a drug that makes your pancreas put out more insulin so it can cause lows. It can also make your pancreas burn out faster. So do research this and consider stopping this drug (in coordination with your Dr.) Metformin does not have this effect. So you can ask your Dr.
2104507 tn?1333752737 With the FT3 and FT4, you also need another TSH. Some people function better with a higher TSH, which is why you need to know the actual thyroid hormone levels. You should also get actual insulin levels tested, if you can. This should be drawn during a period of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If insulin is detectable, the indication is insulin resistance, which means your body is producing insulin, but using it. Talk to your doctor about this.
Avatar f tn I found this forum while searching for reasons people take Wellbutrin. I took it at first as a booster to cymbalta for OCD anxiety. I've never had depression, but when I get put on an ssri I get so depressed I develop suicidal thoughts, especially on amitriptelene sp?
Avatar f tn Disturbed insulin regulation can lead to food cravings, weight gain..and diabetes. Insulin helps with breaking food down to glucose, the bodies natural sugar that is fed to our bodies cells to give us energy. Food probably plays a role too.
Avatar m tn I am 21 years old, had a had a baby a year ago and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 1 month and a half ago. And I have definitely noticed a significant amount of weight gain. I am still trying to get a handle on my diabetes. I am using FlexPen and take 2 shots of 24 units a day. I am starting to get depressed by all the weight gain and even just the daily fight with my Blood Glucose.
