Depression causes low serotonin

Common Questions and Answers about Depression causes low serotonin

depression

4385446 tn?1353798268 Depression might cause it, or it might cause depression. Nobody knows except there is some connection. Statins might therefore cause it if they lower LDL too much, but there isn't solid proof this happens. Thyroid problems can cause it, and thyroid problems can also cause anxiety and/or depression, so another possible connection there. Might be genetic causes. As for meds, they're so nuts as to how differently they affect us it's impossible to know.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have been researching the tests for serotonin because I have very low serum levels. I've had the blood test on several occasions. What I don't know is how it translates to the levels in the brain - the synaptic spaces. The hormone, serotonin, is made in the brain (pineal gland), from its amino acid precursor, tryptophan. Its found in the blood platelets, the lining of the GI tract, and the brain. Amino acids compete for transportation access across the blood-brain barrier.
Avatar f tn Low serotonin levels are often attributed to anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, obesity, fibromyalgia, eating disorders, chronic pain, migraines, and alcohol abuse. Negative thoughts, low self-esteem, obsessive thoughts and behaviors, PMS, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are also symptoms of low serotonin.
349463 tn?1333571576 you're definitely supposed to make them sleep on their back, BUT if they have trouble they can sleep on their sides....aly79 try buying those sleeper wedges (very safe) that can adjust so you can prop him on his side and it'll keep him from rolling over. and no serotonin is not linked to sunlight, that's melatonin :). serotonin is what causes depression, weight gain, sleep problems, etc.
5143317 tn?1383747820 Weight gain, inability to lose weight, depression, mood swings, inability to control my emotions, low sex drive, dry skin, not sleeping good, etc. Could the low end vitamin D be causing the symptoms? I've had cortisol, various hormones and all thyroid tests, everything is normal. If the vitamin D could be the culprit, what is a safe way to supplement. I've bought some 5000IU d3 pills, but after reading a little more I'm scared to take them daily.
Avatar f tn This theoretically leaves more serotonin available in the brain. However if you have low serotonin to begin with these medications either will not work well, or work for a while then "poop out". Natural serotonin supplements are likely to be the most effective means to raise serotonin levels in the brain while being safe and without the side effects of anti depression medications.
1679320 tn?1306382914 Heya guys I was recently told that anxiety and depression are very closely linked by my doctor. I was also aware that for some people they have a chemical imbalance that causes them to be depressed that they cannot fix without medication. Is this possible with anxiety as well and if so is medication the only answer to take away that anxiety which is caused by something physical and not mental.
Avatar f tn Any medication changes should always be supervised by your doctor. Serotonin is involved with anxiety and depression. And many drink to mask feeling and emotion. It's such a common thread in addiction. It can very well all be intertwined. Do you, by the way, see a therapist? That could be very helpful. Here to help any time I can.
Avatar f tn Serotonin is a hormone in the brain that helps make you feel good. When it is low, sadness or depression may result. Eating sugar or other simple carbohydrates helps temporarily because they stimulate serotonin release. If you are insulin resistant your body is still making insulin but the cells do not respond to it you may also develop persistent food cravings. Adrenal imbalance can also cause food cravings, according to the National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases.
Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar n tn Low serotonin symptoms include depression and migranes. What is causing the low serotonin is another matter. I had severe serotonin deficiency due to vitamin B12 malabsorption. My migranes were due to magnesium deficiency.
Avatar n tn SSRI’s are thought to block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin by certain nerve cells in the brain. This theoretically leaves more serotonin available in the brain. However if you have low serotonin to begin with these medications either will not work well, or work for a while then "poop out".
Avatar f tn "Once your natural serotonin levels are low enough to cause syptoms it is very difficult to significantly raise serotonin levels enough by food alone. SSRI's or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and SNRIs, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors do not actually increase the amount of serotonin molecules in the brain. SSRI’s are thought to block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin by certain nerve cells in the brain.
Avatar n tn re worried you should continue to take the medication and call your doctor to make an appointment to talk about it, and if you do somehow develop serotonin syndrome off of low doses like that someone else will notice and take you to the hospital. I'd be willing to bet that it won't happen though.
1023657 tn?1251844941 I'm living with fibro 15 years. Do we know exactly what causes it? Will it ever go away?
Avatar m tn He is probably chronically low on serotonin at this stage, so could it just be some weird sign that the Tryptophan is working and activating his serotonin receptors but that until his serotonin rises above the low level, he will keep getting the brain zaps? I'd appreciate it if anyone with some knowledge on this could give me their opinion.
187666 tn?1331173345 It takes at least 20 minutes before he feels warmed up inside. Related to low BP perhaps? Yes, his body temp runs low, usually 96. something.
Avatar m tn She knew exactly what it is.. Low serotonin!!!! Serotonin controls many things and and a low level causes depression and all the symptoms i have. i took one pill of celexa and an hour later my itching and burning sensations were relieved. However i got diahreaah immediately and started throwing up violently. i also got blurred vision and dizziness and i felt like i was going to faint. I ended up going to the emergency room. They said it was a bad reaction to the medicine.
351317 tn?1204751871 If any of the building blocks is low you are in trouble for low serotonin....I took the test and showed many low levels of important amino acids...I have OCD Pure O.........
999300 tn?1249929219 t cause a real problem itself but it is an increased pharmacodynamic interaction which means both drugs are effecting the serotonin release which, when used in large amount, could result in a serotonin syndrome.
