Hello, I was just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the long term use of Depo-Provera Contraceptive. I have been using it for a few years now, and have no plans of stopping using it anytime soon, as I am in college and will be for quite some time to come. But what I don't know is considering the fact that since being on Depo, I have had pretty much no menstrual cycle for a very long time.

this may be a dumb form. but my mom has told me im going on the depo shot, im very upset. i hard it makes you gain over 10 pounds and gives you headahcs and can even make acne worse. im also worried about having a pap smear, do you think i will have to have one for this?

i was on the depo for like 3 years and then stopped that in october and went to the nuvaring. i had like 2-3 periods on the nuvaring but i was so inconsisent with it i like screwed up my body and decided just to take it completely out and regulate my body aswell as try to get pregnant.

Possibility too much depo is in your system now so you're experiencing more side effects. Depo is not even a great birth control. Many women gain A LOT of weight from depo. I recommend you go see your doctor about the issue and possibly try switching to another birth control.

Laura~ It's normal. I was on Nuvaring for 3 months AFTER Getting off the depo. I had been on Depo 3 yrs and gained 50 lbs! I gain weight on ANY kind of hormonal BC no matter what level of hormones are in it. I put on 15 lbs with Nuvaring. You will have some breakthru bleeding or even bleeding on wierd days for about 3 months until your body gets used to nuvaring. Don't worry about it.

Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron. I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it. The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
