Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera menstrual cycle

depo-provera

Avatar f tn m outside the normal range of time after stopping Depo Provera to have gotten my periods back. Could Depo be causing these problems or does it sound like something else could be a problem?
Avatar f tn Another fact to be aware of is that once you stop Depo injections, it may take several months for your menstrual cycle to become 'normal' again. Although you can become pregnant after stopping Depo, it can take several months to a year before you're able to conceive. Personally, I liked Depo because it was easy to maintain the scheduled appointments every 3 months. Also, it is extremely effective when it comes to preventing pregnancy.
Avatar f tn Pregnancy occurring during the use of the shot is usually an undetected pregnancy before the shot is given. One of the side effects of Depo-Provera is irregular menstrual bleeding. 50% of women will stop getting their period after 1 year of the shot. The period usually returns after stopping the shots, however, it can take 3 months to a year for the effects of Depo-Provera to wear off and fertility to return.
Avatar f tn Irregular menstrual periods, or no periods at all Headaches Nervousness Depression Dizziness Acne Changes in appetite Weight gain Excessive growth of facial and body hair Hair loss Loss of bone mineral density Most of the side effects are not common. Change in the menstrual cycle is the most common side effect. You may experience irregular bleeding or spotting. After a year of use, about 50% of women will stop getting their periods. Their periods usually return when they discontinue the shots.
Avatar f tn Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron. I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it. The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
505857 tn?1329681517 I stopped the Depo shot August 2007 and had my first menstrual cycle Nov 2007, we have been trying to conceive ever since with no luck. Could anyone tell me, I am looking to start taking the pill to try and regulate my system again, does this work? I have heard many people have done this after coming off Depo and it has worked, but i'm not sure what to do. My periods are a regular 26 days but are pretty heavy. Any advice is much appreciated!!!!
Avatar m tn I just got a shot of depo-provera birth control 3 days ago and my period was supposed to start yesterday and it hasn't. I am sexually active and the last time I had sex was on my period last month and we used condoms but I wasn't on birth control and my partner did not go all the way. I just went to the GYN and got my annual pelvic exam and my first shot of depo and so far everything has been okay.
Avatar f tn A few years ago, I was put on Depo Provera. I was taking this for about a year and only had 1 menstrual period in this entire time. I have heard that this is quite common, and it can really mess up your cycle etc. I stopped taking it and went back to the pill as soon as possible, and I was soon back to normal.
Avatar f tn If you were using Depo-Provera it may take longer for your cycles to return to normal. Keep in mind that Depo-Provera is designed to be a long-lasting form of birth control. Even though it is intended to help you avoid pregnancy for up to three months, it may actually prevent pregnancy longer. Depo-Provera is a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone.

Avatar f tn I am 27. I was on Depo-Provera for 5 years, and have been off it for 3 years with normal (for me) menstrual cycles. During the past 6 months I have been trying to conceive, with no success. My period usually lasts about 4 days with a light to moderate flow. However, recently (during the past few months) I have been experiencing severe cramping during my period and lower back pain, as well as constant abdominal pain (not severe).
487969 tn?1249313291 Constant cycle brought on BCPs, Depo Provera, Depo Lupron, etc. and eventually, the fertilaty doc that administered the Depo Lupron told me I would not be able to have kids (at 17 I was told that). Had 2 Endometreiosis surgeries in addition to this. Nothing helped. At 21 I got pregnant (what a shock). Cycle was ok after that, but with gradual return of pain. At 27 had another child. Unable to breastfeed (which I was not entirely unhappy about) and had no leakage after cessation.
Avatar f tn t know is considering the fact that since being on Depo, I have had pretty much no menstrual cycle for a very long time. I was never really regular with my period before going on the Depo, either. Could I be somehow harming my reproductive system by being without a period for so long? I know that I definately want to have children in the future, and I would be very upset if I had inadvertently made it harder for myself to have my own children.
Avatar f tn I was on depo provera for 6 years, now I have been off it for 1 year and 1 month, I have been having the mood swings, tiredness, I get nauseated from late at night till about mid morning, I am bloated, my boobs have gone up at least one cup size, I have had previous vagiunal and breast bleeding, and my ankles feet and legs always feel swelled and it hurts me to walk very far, am I pregnant?
2184791 tn?1337896617 Hmm its common you dnt get your period on the depo provera because somee might experience spotting or light period or no period at all ...you will be fine dont be scared and pain may be just from the sex not the shot..is this your first time using depo?
Avatar f tn I decided to take this birth control method when I received my orders to deploy to afghanistan. I knew that having cramps and menstrual cycle would only slow me down or distract me from my mission. Now I am back at my Garrison unit. My last shot was during the month of February 2008 and it is now December 2, 2008. I am currently on my menstrual cycle. So, I would say it's been 8-9 months and I finally have a period. I know how you feel and it is depressing inside.
Avatar n tn Hello I just got my cycle back after being on the depo provera shot and it been down since 12-18-2010 I wondering when will be the best time to try for a baby?
Avatar f tn Hi! I'm 26yrs old & have a 6yr old son. I'm currently not on any type of birth control & have not been in a year. I was on the depo-provera shot & was not having a period; however, I have still not had a menstrual cycle & I haven't had a shot in almost 1yr! The other day I noticed that my breasts were very tender & sore to the touch! They started out extremely sore & anything touching them hurt so bad that it almost brought tears to my eyes.
Avatar f tn Hey there! My first shot of depo ended May 15 2015. I didn't go back for a second shot. Changes in menstrual cycle is expected but this month was weird. I got my first period after depo in May. Two days after it expired. It lasted bout a week, was light, fairly normal. Then I bled again bout two weeks later that lasted about a week and a half also light. So I bled twice in May. I skipped the month of June, no period.
Avatar f tn I missed a dose of Depo provera by 7 days now. I know that I am not pregnant due to no intercourse. My question is do I still have to wait until I get a cycle? What if I dont have a cycle for several months, in the past my cycle was abnornal to begin with. If I have the depo without being on my cycle will I still be protected? I started the depo Aug. 2008. And had never missed a dose until this time. My dose was due May 1, 2009. Can anyone help me with this???
1305767 tn?1361192676 When I was 16 I started taking the BC depo provera and was on it for about 10 years then decided to stop. I didn't have periods while on depo but they eventually returned to normal and ran like clock work. Last year I started having problems with pelvic pain, painful intercourse, bad menstrual cramps, low back pain, and flu like feelings at certain points during my cycle. I saw the gyno in April this year and had a pap and pelvic exam and even a pelvic and abdominal ultra sound.
Avatar f tn My gynecologist recently informed me that she suspects that I MAY have PCOS due to my lack of ovulation and heavy menstrual cycles. So she has prescribed me depo provera in order to control my heavy bleeding. (My periods have ALWAYS been irregular since I was 11 and it's very common for me to miss 2- 3 months of a period and then to experience heavy bleeding for over a month!) But they did a vaginal ultrasound and found NO cysts! They said my uterine lining was a little thick but NO cysts!
