Depo provera how it works

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera how it works

depo-provera

Avatar f tn Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron. I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it. The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
Avatar f tn If you were using Depo-Provera it may take longer for your cycles to return to normal. Keep in mind that Depo-Provera is designed to be a long-lasting form of birth control. Even though it is intended to help you avoid pregnancy for up to three months, it may actually prevent pregnancy longer. Depo-Provera is a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone.
Avatar f tn Doctor, Thank you for taking time to respond to my question. If depo caused me to gain weight.. How long until it is out out of my body? I had my last injection in April and continue to gain weight. I've seen several doctors, most have run a thyroid test--which they said was normal and simply tell me to "burn more calories and eat better.
1978422 tn?1326152277 Provera works like a charm...i have severe PCOS and have been prescribed it MANY times to induce my period. You could ask your drs for provera and clomid to induce your period then ovulation!!
Avatar f tn Ve never really linked it to the depo until now but the benefits of being on it were so strong I am reluctant to come off it!
1714443 tn?1309687971 It sounds like Depo-Provera...Take a look at the link the above poster gave you. It will give you all the info you need. FYI Her chances of getting pregnant on the depo are VERY slim..It is normal for her not to get her period on the depo. That's what it does..I was on it for 4 yrs..Don't be nervous, just do your research on it...I must say, her Dr should've told her what he was giving her as an injection. Was she not informed before he gave it to her?
Avatar f tn m outside the normal range of time after stopping Depo Provera to have gotten my periods back. Could Depo be causing these problems or does it sound like something else could be a problem?
Avatar f tn If your period hasn't stopped in 4 months you should call your doctor. The depo works in a very different way - on the hypothalmus. If you can't remember to take you birth control every day, you may try a patch or ring. If that schedule doesn't work than depo is you next best option. If nothing else, your doctor will be able to give you something to stop the bleeding.
4069776 tn?1349518384 Hello, I was on depo provera for 9 years, I had my last shot in Jan 2012 and was suppose to come get my next shot April 2012, My doctor informed me that it would be fine for me to just stop taking it because I did so well while I was on it and that I should be fine coming off of it, well I didnt. I had horrible side effects from July and they are still happening now, I have had every test done (ultrasounds, blood test, endoscopes, ect.) and everything came back normal.
Avatar f tn It could be a side effect of the shot. How long have you been on the depo shot? or it could be irritation, a cut inside of you, sign of an STD, etc.
494555 tn?1228504371 ve never used depo provera, but I have heard that it can take a few months before your cycles get back to normal. Although it sounds like you're already there :-) Good luck to you!
Avatar f tn I received my first depo provera shot in march 2010, my last shot was in april 2011. While I was on Depo I had a period every 3 months right before I was due for my next shot. I was due for my last shot in July but Decided I wanted to stop taking birth control. I got my period as expected and then didn't get the shot. A week later i got my period again, and then about 2 or 2 1/2 weeks i got my period again. Now it has been about 5 weeks without a period.
801413 tn?1333539276 How long did it take, what method were you using? Estimate from the time the contraception was no longer "effective" (24 hours after the pill, 13 weeks after depo provera, immediately after IUD removal, immediately after stopping condom use) Long-term methods for this poll would include the hormonal IUD, Depo Provera (the shot), and Implanon or other birth control implants.
Avatar f tn I have a history of anxiety and depression. Is depo-provera a good choice or a bad choice for birth control? Thank you!
Avatar m tn Hi, my girlfriend lives overseas and she's on depo provera. She gets the shot once or twice a year only (not every 12 or 13 weeks). She has it injected one month in advance, every time before I travel overseas to visit her and have sex. I know depo provera meant to provide over 99% protection after 7 days, but we like to be extra cautious and wait a month before having sex. She had her last shot in September, and I visited her nearly a month later in October.
3113005 tn?1341773834 I am little confused by your question. The depo provera shot is given once every three months not for three months at some unspecified interval. If you mean that you received the depo shot 4 months ago, and hence, the last month, you did not get a repeat depo shot, then the answer to your question is, yes, you can get pregnant. I was on the depo shot for about 5 years before stopping to try to conceive. It took me 3 years to conceive my son who is 6 years old.
Avatar f tn I've been on depo provera for 15 years and my periods stopped right away. I'm 45 years old and just had a period that lasted 5 days. My question is whether or not depo provera is still working as my birth control choice? Is there a way to know if depo provera is no longer working and if I may get pregnant?
Avatar f tn The period usually returns after stopping the shots, however, it can take 3 months to a year for the effects of Depo-Provera to wear off and fertility to return.
Avatar f tn it take a good 3 months i was on it for almost 3 years it took me 7 months to get pregnant so .

Avatar f tn This risk is more likely for those who have been taking it for longer than two years, particularly when other risk factors for osteoporosis exist, such as family history and chronic alcohol and/or tobacco use. Although there are no studies to benefit its use, it is advised that all women on Depo-Provera get adequate calcium and Vitamin D (through diet and/or supplements) to help prevent osteoporosis.
Avatar n tn Hello, Irregular bleeding like you describe is a common side effect of Depo Provera. Your girlfriend should have been counseled about this possibility when initiated on the medication. If she has any questions/concerns she should see the provider who is prescribing the medication. Best regards, Dr.
