Depo provera and lupus

Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and lupus

depo-provera

I took depo provera for about 6 years, starting in 2000. Just over three months after I stopped taking the shots I developed a nodule in my neck which was eventually diagnosed as thyroid cancer. I have absolutely no history of thyroid problems of any kind in family and I had had no problems before the depo.
I have read that being on birth control could cause people to have flares and is kind of bad for people with lupus. I have never been on birth control and was wondering what is the best way to go when i do have to be on birth control. I don't want to live like a nun all my life just because i have lupus and can't be on birth control. Also with all of the different meds that i take i wouldn't want to become pregnant if i was sexually active.
I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday and I'm hoping they take my complaints seriously. 9 months ago, I took the Depo Provera shot for birth control. About 6 weeks later, all my symptoms started. I barely even noticed them at first, but here's what's happened: 15 lb.
I know...it's not attractive and very depressing. I pluck (which is not good for you and causes hyperpigmentation) and I shave. I've become very skilled at covering the hyperpigmentation up with concealer but I'm so tired of it. The plucking on my neck has caused so much hyperpigmentation that I have to conceal it or people would look at me and ask me, "What's wrong with your neck?" The skin on my chest also has hyperpigmentation and I only shave this area.
This is probably autoimmune considering the ANA and SED-rate. Lupus, and Scleroderma commonly cause problems with internal organs. The rash sounds like Lupus, but other autoimmune problems cause rashes too. Is it possible she has Crohn's Disease, or Celiac Disease? These are autoimmune too. Any other blood work?
A side benefit to Depo is many (and I am one of them) do not have periods at all and have not had one since starting Depo--it's success rate at preventing pregnancy is 99.7% which is actually higher than tubal ligation anyway. While its true that it can't be immediately withdrawn from the system after being tried, it has only a 3 month duration and would be back out of her system if it didn't work for her.
I think it also made me nauseated. I agree with Inny that practicing abstinence and getting off the depo-provera would be an excellent step.
I'VE HAD SEVERAL BLOOD TEST (BLEEDING, PLATLETS,LUPUS,) THE FINAL TEST WAS A SKIN BIOSPY AND THAT CAME BACK AS BASAL HYPERPIGMENTATION,BUT THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE HYPERPIGMENTATION ALSO MAYBE A LATE STAGE OF PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS, I'VE SEEN PICTURES OF THAT AND IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE IT.I WAS ON DEPO PROVERA FOR A WHILE AND GOT OFF TO SEE IF IT WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND IT HAS NOT. ARE THERE ANY OTHER TEST THAT I CAN TAKE? THE DOCTOR IS OPEN FOR IDEAS TOO BE-CAUSE HE WANTS TO KNOW.
She said she took SEVERAL HPT and 2 blood ALL NEGATIVE. Finally when her Doc gave her a RX for provera to start her period she was tested one more time 12/9 almost a month later she FINALLY GOT a positive blood test. Her Docs theory is she just ovulated VERY late in her cycle that month!!! How crazy is that!!? It took almost a WHOLE month for her to show positive for pregnant. I mean you are alittle further than a month though. Have you got an ultrasound?
So, I was given the Depo Provera shot. I was told again that my symptoms should lessen in a few weeks. I went back in around Thanksgiving because I was still having pain and now I was getting strong abdominal cramping as well. I was sent to my regular physician to get an MRI and rule out other things. Everything came back negative. Then I wound up in the ER over Christmas break because my abdominal cramping was so strong I was doubling over in pain.
And nothing seems to help. I've tried aspri - doesn't work. I try massaging my breast and shoulders and that seems to help a tiny bit. Usually the pain is very dull...but one night I woke up in excruciating pain for about 10 seconds, then it went back to being dull. I'm 24, and I am being treated for Anxiety/Panic Disorder. My Psychiatrist does not think it's related. Does ANYONE have ANY ideas about what could be going on with me?!?!?!
You could also consider switching to a different birth control, again or have and IUD placed. I used the depo-provera injection and had no side affects except for some weight gain. It even got rid of ALL my menstral cramps, which use to keep me in bed even with pain pills, breast soreness and lower back pain, all which were normal for me during the first few days of my period. The depo-, if stayed on for years, will most likely stop you from having a period at all.
and some blood tests and re-started the provera and we got pregnant right away. Then we mc in January 2006. My first "cycle" following the mc (starting af with provera again), he started me on clomid. He started me with 50MG a day which we tried for about 6 cycles, and then increased me to 100MG. We had just assumed the problem was on my end all along since I didn't seem to be ovulating regularly. But we finally got really frustrated and had dh tested about 6 months ago.
I have been fatigued and nauseated for about a month. Im on Depo Provera, and knew I wasnt pregnant, but feel like it. My doctor sent me for a blood test, and everything is borderline low. (my WBC is 5.2, RBC is 4.08, CO2 is 20). I can give any other info that may be key. six days ago I began seeing blood in my stool. It looks like red flakes in the B.M. I also have free blood as well. The nausea and fatigue hasnt let up, the blood in the stool has, but Im still going for a cat scan on monday.
i am 26 years old i have 3 kids to look after but i feel like i can't do anything right anymore i am nauseated all day very dizzy no matter what i may be doing i have even gotten so dizzy while i was alseep that it woke me up and imedeiately upon waking vomiting i am so tired of the doctors saying it's because you are overweight ,your just stressed or it's all in your head i have begged to have ct /mri's done they respond with well i think you may have vertigo lets send you to a ear doctor i jus
I've been tested a billion times due to crazy autoimmune responses to things i.e. ..tetanus booster, depo provera, and an IUD and mold. One reaction was so horrible they thought I had Lupus and Fibromyalgia. It took 2 years to resolve. That is why I am petrified of the Hep C treatment, I will most likely get my butt kicked.
Endo wants me to undergo a gastroscopy and to think about taking Depo-Provera contraceptive injections. Symptoms are to me not from anemia as they consist of heavy periods, orthostatic hypotension (blood rushes when standing from sitting) and cramping in legs when walking. Symptoms that have now gone: constipation, depression, fatigue, cold intolerance. I have now eliminated gluten and dairy in its entirety. I had an abnormal urine sample which showed leukocytes (white blood) and protein.
I have never had headaches but on the 8th of Dec I had a horrible migraine and they have not stopped since then. I was on Depo Provera and switched to Lo/overal pills could this be a reason for the headaches? I stopped taking the pill last Friday after visiting the ER with horrible pains in my head. All the tests at the ER can back ok but the headaches still come everyday. I was taking up to five meds a day to curb the pain until 2 days ago.
I think it may have something to do with tampons or hormones because 1 year ago I stopped the depo injection and started the pill. Which meant that I was getting periods for the first time in years. I started to get mild thrush for a week after every period and now an ulcer in that week as well.
there is NO WAY that I am pregnant and he wants me to take Provera to bring on a period and then start injectibles in the next cycle. I am not sure I am OK with this, any thoughts? Not counting on it, but hoping!!!
Well...I was just looking up my symptoms on the web and tada...found this page. I seem to have very similiar symptoms. I get chills/shakes at night and various times through out the day. My heart will beat really hard, especially at night. but various times during the day as well. I am sick to my stomach often. It's worse at night, but right now as I type this during the day I feel very sick and nausiated. I was diagnosed with IBS...but never had symptoms like these before.
I have been extremely effected by the side effects.Mostly memory and spelling.I have tingling in the fingers and toes.I also have little appetite and have lost 17lbs.Witch is great for me. I am over weight.I am tired more than normal, but i did sleep alot due to migrains.I do have more side effects and stuff, but I wont over load you all at once.I know this sounds like alot, but it has gotten better as time goes on. I have started to level off and become more normal.
HPT's and a blood test at the doctor's both came back negative a week and a half ago. Could I still be pregnant and not have enough hcg in my system? I have also had occassional very light brown spotting. I FEEL pregnant, but also know that I am really WANTING to be pregnant so am wondering if that is playing a role. Should I get my blood test redone soon? My doctor said to wait a month, but also admitted he had not had much experience with pregnancies either! (oh great!
I just started using Seasonique (used to be called Seasonal) Dec 19,2006 and I'm hoping there will be some ladies on here that can provide me with some feed back. I was hoping I would be able to read the insert that was supposed to come with the filled prescription, but the pharmacy didn't include it in the bag. Anywho, can anyone tell me if they had swollen, sore breast and sore nipples when they first started taking this type of bc? My stomach is also a little tender to the touch.
all my homone tests came back WNL except my thyroid level was a little low.... am on thyroid medication and Provera right now... am also taking herbal vitamins to help with conception.. my left ovary has been hurting a little and my cervix is really sensitive... am hoping to get a good period in 3 to 7 days and then I will be able to test for ovulation. OBGYN says I will need to see a reproductive endocrinologist if I don't get pregnant soon...
I'm 4 days past provera and nothing yet. I'm getting alittle worried because I've been on provera like 6 times and almost always like clock work I get it two days after stopping it. I'll wait until it's been 7 days past then I'll call my dr. Didn't realize I could wish so much for AF :-) Well I have enjoyed this day off. Back to work tomorrow. Hope you all had a great weekend :-) SSBD!!!!
I got my IUD out on Aug 5th and am ttc. I have had lots of spotting and maybe a period but nothing regular. I called my doc and they said that it takes 3 months before the hormones are out of your system. The mirena website makes it sound as though you can get pregnant anytime after removal. Any advice/stories would be appreciated. Thanks.
Did you get any medical diagnosis yet? I gained 22 pounds in 4 days and we have ruled out failing kidneys and heart problems and my doctor is clueless.
I've been to vascular surgeons, cardiologists. hand surgeons and regular md's and no one can help me. This just happened again to my thumb after 10 years and my cardiologist prescribed high blood pressure meds...and I DON'T have high blood pressure, I've been running for 25 years! If anyone has a diagnosis please share...I know your frustration.
Now here I sit, nearly a full week late, and I break down to buy one of those HPT's and the thing comes out negative. I keep feeling like I'm going to get my period and nothing...day after day. I'll post again with the blood test results, because I'm going in for one tomorrow. Obviously from the other posts, it can be possible to test negative on an HPT but then positive with a blood test (that's what I'm secretly hoping).
