Common Questions and Answers about Depo provera and hair growth

depo-provera

Avatar m tn I have read at length about many different side effects of Depo-Provera and though I never experienced hair loss as a symptom I understand that can occur after a period of treatment. I have also read about the effects of hormones and their influence on each other and am hoping that this is an isolated incident due to the ever changing flux in my hormone levels recently.
Avatar f tn Other forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and prescribed in the treatment of endometrial cancer. Some doctors prescribe Provera to treat endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea (temporary failure to breathe while sleeping). Avatar f tn s no way to tell for sure, but more and more proof is coming out that autism is NOT linked to vaccines, and because depo provera is an active hormone shot and not a vaccine, I highly doubt that it is the cause. Are your other children girls by any chance? Very often a family that has an autistic child only has 1 (almost always a boy), and the rest of the children are "normal". They are thinking more and more that it's a genetic mutation.
Avatar n tn (I have lost track). The Depo shot caused my hair to fall out. I have extremely thick curly hair, halfway down the middle of my back. By the time I got off the Depo shot my hair was so thin I had to put a ponytail holder around 4-5 times and my hair is now barely past my shoulders. It's horrible. And to top it off, I am still having my periods for 6+ weeks. I got off the shot and started taking vitamins for my hair.
Avatar n tn I think i am pregnant but i am on the depo provera shot. Is that possible and if it is will the shot affect the fetus? I would be a month and some now and i have been having unprotected sex for two months.
494669 tn?1275362475 I have been off Depo-Provera for 11 months now and still haven't conceived. Every month i have the same symptoms you are describing and every month i have the same negative result. I was also told afetr i came off the injection it could take me anything from a year to 2 years to conceive.
3113005 tn?1341773834 Although depo plays around with your hormones a LOT...I lost my hair with my first shot and gain 60lbs in a month and half....so I HATE DEPO. Get checked out to be sure....and even with Depo you should be using condoms and spemicide(One bc method for you and him and one for insurance) Plus you have to watch out for STDs....that bad stuff.
Avatar f tn of 2011 and I am still without a period, still cramping, and have had severe hormonal changes, including the severe onset of hirsutism (hair growth that is dark and coarse in places typical of male body hair, such as on the face and torso) and it is driving me insane. Any suggestions on how to cope with this?
Avatar n tn has taken me off the Depo Shots and I was put on Birth Control Pills. The blood was very dark red and blood clots. I was given an altrsound was told nothing was wrong. Is this normal with the Depo Provera?
Avatar f tn i thought it would be good for me since i got layoff at that time, but i need my hair. another thing my hair on my head was comin out. but the hair on my legs and underarms would grow back so fast.. PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE GETTIN IT..
Avatar f tn I have a history of anxiety and depression. Is depo-provera a good choice or a bad choice for birth control? Thank you!
432411 tn?1206472109 I took depo provera for about 6 years, starting in 2000. Just over three months after I stopped taking the shots I developed a nodule in my neck which was eventually diagnosed as thyroid cancer. I have absolutely no history of thyroid problems of any kind in family and I had had no problems before the depo.
Avatar f tn Im 28 and have never been pregnant slightly overweight but not too concerred and getting it back down periods were always regular and pain free went on for birth control, my husband has 1 child already and decided to start are own family.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am not sure of what type of antibiotic might affect other contraceptives like the pill, but I am pretty sure that she will be fine on the shot. I myself had the depo-provera shot about 10 years ago. I only had one shot and I didn't have a period until a whole year later. It actually took me over another year after my period returned before, I finally became pregnant. The depo-provera shot is extremely effective.
384896 tn?1335294331 not sure about the breast feeding part but a lot of women on this site might agree with me to stay clear of depo-provera. I was on this bc for 2 and a half years and have been ttc for the same length of time with no joy. I was diagnosed with depression at 16 years old when i was on this, i asked the doc if that was the problem and was told no, when the depo eventually cleared from my system so did the depression my family say i was a new person.
590413 tn?1218784711 It sounds like you are on the depo provera shot sassiebritches, all those symptoms can come from it
Avatar n tn This syndrome is notable for infrequent menstruation (oligomenorrhea), hyperandrogenism (this may be evidenced by excess hair growth in a male distribution) and slightly enlarged ovaries with multiple small follicles. 2 of these 3 elements are all that is needed to make the diagnosis. Commonly, women who meet this diagnosis are obese and have evidence of insulin resistance.
Avatar f tn m outside the normal range of time after stopping Depo Provera to have gotten my periods back. Could Depo be causing these problems or does it sound like something else could be a problem?
Avatar f tn In order to get pregnant though, you need to not only be ovulating but you also need to be producing fertile cervical mucous and a thick uterine lining after you ovulate. The reason Depo-Provera is so long lasting is because of the way it works. The levels of DMPA (the synthetic hormone in Depo-Provera) gradually increase over a three week period, at which time they reach their peak levels. After three weeks the DMPA levels begin to decrease exponentially.
363110 tn?1340920419 To add to this, I have a second cousin who got the depo shot and she lost ALL her body hair.. I dont know if it was an allergic reaction for her that has nothing to do with anyone else.. But its made me scared S******* to get the shot!
Avatar n tn One thing I noticed during my internet search was a number of results discussing Depo Provera and how it has caused the onset of early menopause in women even in their 20’s. Has anyone else heard about this, and if so, are there other resources I can review to get more information on this correlation? Thanks, I just have to know what is causing this!
Avatar f tn Recently, Me and My Boyfriend had un-protected sex.. and afterwards i started bleeding. we haven't had sex in a week, what could time be a sign of.. I am on Depo Provera-the birth control shot?
Avatar f tn The period usually returns after stopping the shots, however, it can take 3 months to a year for the effects of Depo-Provera to wear off and fertility to return.
Avatar f tn So, i'm thinking of switching my birth control. i was on the pill, but sometimes i forgot to take it and i don't take it at the same time always. i was reading up on depo provera...i've heard some great things & then i have heard some complete horror stories! can anyone on this pill tell me about their experiences please? i have read you don't get your period anymore, tons of weight gain, hair loss, increase your risk of getting breast cancer...i mean is all of this true.
Avatar f tn I've been on depo provera for 15 years and my periods stopped right away. I'm 45 years old and just had a period that lasted 5 days. My question is whether or not depo provera is still working as my birth control choice? Is there a way to know if depo provera is no longer working and if I may get pregnant?
Avatar f tn Hello, I was just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the long term use of Depo-Provera Contraceptive. I have been using it for a few years now, and have no plans of stopping using it anytime soon, as I am in college and will be for quite some time to come. I know that I am putting myself at risk for Osteoporosis by using it for a long time. But what I don't know is considering the fact that since being on Depo, I have had pretty much no menstrual cycle for a very long time.
