I am 27. I was on Depo-Provera for 5 years, and have been off it for 3 years with normal (for me) menstrual cycles. During the past 6 months I have been trying to conceive, with no success. My period usually lasts about 4 days with a light to moderate flow. However, recently (during the past few months) I have been experiencing severe cramping during my period and lower back pain, as well as constant abdominal pain (not severe).
In order to get pregnant though, you need to not only be ovulating but you also need to be producing fertile cervical mucous and a thick uterine lining after you ovulate. The reason Depo-Provera is so long lasting is because of the way it works. The levels of DMPA (the synthetic hormone in Depo-Provera) gradually increase over a three week period, at which time they reach their peak levels. After three weeks the DMPA levels begin to decrease exponentially.
And as for trouble getting pregnant afterward different types of birth control work differently for different people I was pregnant within 2 months of stopping my shots and easily got pregnant with my second son also after resuming and stopping my depo shots again. I feel that it is a great birth control and have recommended it to people its very effective and most people I know have only had minor side affects such as spotting for a little while.

I would suggest that you start doing ovulation predictors once you have a normal period and if you are not ovulating regularly, you could start a medication like Clomid to overcome the after effects of the depo.
Also, you should take lots of vit D and calcium--depo can cause thining of the bone, but that is reversible when you stop it.

s no way to tell for sure, but more and more proof is coming out that autism is NOT linked to vaccines, and because depo provera is an active hormone shot and not a vaccine, I highly doubt that it is the cause. Are your other children girls by any chance? Very often a family that has an autistic child only has 1 (almost always a boy), and the rest of the children are "normal". They are thinking more and more that it's a genetic mutation.
Hello, I have been given my FIRST depo-provera shot earlier this month, and it was not within my cycle - it was the 11th day afterwards. I had unprotected sex the following day, and am very worried I may be pregnant. Since I did not wait the seven days. I am extremely nauseous, getting bad headaches every two-three days, tender breasts, mood swings and today, I had a strong and sharp cramping feeling that lasted for less than thirty seconds, repeated and then stopped.
I had my first 3 children while on birth control. My first I was using the pill, and got pregnant after a year of being on the medication. My oldest son was concieved on the patch. And my youngest son was concieved again on the pill.
I had used Depo for 3 years and never had any issues. I didnt gain wait, or anything. The only minor side effects I did have was mild cramping after the shot, and headaches. Although once I got off depo that was different.
