Cytomel vs synthroid

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel vs synthroid

cytomel

Avatar n tn 5 mcg is the smallest dose of cytomel you can get. You can try quartering the cytomel, though it's rather difficult with those tiny pills. I have done it though. I've never heard of tonsilitis being a side effect of cytomel; do you have a website or anything stating that? It's not unusual to have symptoms return when changing doses/meds, until your body gets used to them. Even though cytomel is fast acting, it can still take some time to adjust to it.
Avatar n tn Cytomel is a fast acting drug with a short "half-life" in your system (just hours). Synthroid (T4) takes weeks to build up the dosage in your system and weeks to come off of. If you go the Synthroid route, it will take you a much longer time to get "hypo" for the RAI when you do eventually do it. I would put off your trip, do the RAI, and be done with it, if possible or do the RAI sooner.
280485 tn?1249013844 I was on 137mcg Levothyroxine and 25mcg Cytomel. He perscribed 175 mcg Synthroid, and of course, I am to discontinue the Cytomel. Are the two meds Levo and Synthroid, similar as far as how much you need? Or should I anticipate a big difference in how I feel tomorrow and the next few days? And, I guess I'm wondering if this is going to take weeks to ramp up and just a wild a#@! guess that will need several "tweekings"?
Avatar f tn She continued to prescribe my cytomel and synthroid doing tsh checks every six months. Just about every time I went in she would talk about not understanding the cytomel prescription. I just went for another tsh test and she decided not to prescribe the cytomel and only the synthroid. I spoke with the nurse and asked if the test included a t3 test and were my levels off. The test did not include a t3 and they said that the tsh was enough and if it was normal they had no reason to do a t3 test.
Avatar f tn I have been on thie Synthroid for over 15years. I have been on the Cytomel for about 10 years. I feel like the Cytomel is a waste of money. I was thinking about gradually dropping it to see if I notice any changes. I feel that 5 mg is hardly enough to notice a difference. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to stabilize or to notice the change. I have forgotten to take it on occasion and I don't notice a difference in energy.
Avatar f tn What would be the determining factor for prescribing armour thyroid vs synthroid (and maybe cytomel)? I appreciate your help very much. It seems like it has taken forever to get the right dosage and help.
Avatar f tn I used to be on .2mg Synthroid and Cytomel, forget the dose until I could not get it any longer. It is again available I see. I had shown my previous doctor, moved, a study showing its benefits with synthroid. can you comment on it and also tell me what that study was. thanks This discussion is related to Adding Cytomel.
Avatar n tn I was doing really really well on .137 mcg of synthroid and 50 mcg of cytomel and my dr. took me down to 25mcg on cytomel. So I stopped taking all of the meds about 2 months ago. Will the portion of my thyroid that wasn't removed begin working again? Will I have more weight gain without meds, or will it go to hyperthyroid? Or will I have more weight gain or less on the smaller dosage?
Avatar f tn I became mildly hypo after one lobe was removed. If I had not gotten on meds I would be very sick by now. I got synthroid samples from my doc--enough for 3 weeks. I had my scrip filled and of course they gave me the generic instead of Syn because at the bottom of the prescription it said "generic may be substituted unless synthroid required by doctor." I felt better on the Syn at the 5 day mark, went back down to fatigue and hurting feet until the 3 week mark.
280485 tn?1249013844 Cytomel/Synthroid or Cytomel and (insert any other T4 drug here), and Armour too? Of course not all at the same time. I'm looking for a comparison in synthetic drug combos vs. natural thyroid replacement here. I swear I've tried more thyroid meds than a drug addict at this point (and could probably start my own pharmacy... Shhhh! Don't tell the FDA...:-O), but I've not yet tried Armour.
1058524 tn?1285187240 I can't take Cytomel past one pm or I can't get to sleep until midnight. That stuff is strong. I suggest taking it earlier, and then breaking the 25 into three or four doses. Maybe 25 in the am. 12.5 before lunch and 12.5 before dinner. Also, I don't think you will feel your best until you get back on the Levo. How long until you are finished with treatment and can get back on the Levo? I am thinking of quitting my Cytomel and just going with the stronger Synthroid.
Avatar n tn They found that the results were nearly the same for people going off their meds vs. people who did Thyrogen shots. I know in my case, my surgeon put me on Cytomel (which is faster acting) in case my levels don't go high enough for scans and RAI. This way they can pull me off and I would get hypo a lot faster than if I was on Synthroid which takes two weeks to get out of your system.
Avatar f tn After 4 years on Armor thyroid, my MD switched me to synthroid 25 mcg and cytomel 5 mcg 1 bid (tid prn). I am a 50 y.o females who is s/p total hysterectomy for ovarian ca. I take Estratest FS 4 X's week. I am feeling MUCH better with the Synthroid and Cytomel, however, my latest labs have come back as follows: TSH- .062 Free Thyroxin-- 1.
Avatar f tn Hello, I'm 35 female and have been treated for hypothyroidism for 10 years. For the past few years, I've been taking 75 mcg of Synthroid and 25 mcg of Cytomel. Back in March, I made a drastic change to my diet and lost 10 lbs in 2 months after switching to the Paleo diet. I was feeling great but would wake up super early which I attributed to paleo.
Avatar f tn My surgeon took me off Synthroid the day of my surgery. He placed me on Cytomel. He told me that Cytomel is fast acting and leaves the body quickly. I will need to go off Cytomel two weeks prior to treatment vs. six weeks off the Synthroid. I have also read of a shot that is given. This shot eliminates the need of going off meds. I'm not sure what the shots are called, but maybe someone here knows.
1070570 tn?1283436213 I switched to Synthroid and Cytomel and after some dosage adjustments, I am now on 150 Synthroid and 12.5 mcg of Cytomel, with the Cytomel split into two doses, in a.m. and late afternoon.
1070570 tn?1283436213 Do you have recent labs and reference ranges? Cytomel is much more powerful than Synthroid (about four times more powerful). So, if you subtract 25 mcg of Cytomel from your regimen, you ought to be adding more like 100 mcg of Synthroid. It sounds like your doctor might have left you undermedicated in the switch to Synthroid. I have no personal experience with Cytomel-only therapy, but I do know of people who have been treated with T3-only temporarily.
1019013 tn?1252002096 Was on Synthroid (t4 only) for many years. Not converting enough to t3 (ACTIVE HORMONE). Always check your free t3 levels! If too low, but t4 is high normal, then t3 will be needed along with the t4. We chose to do this with a natural desicated approach, but it can be added synthetically as well. It really is a personal choice of "what ever works best for each individual." If it's not working, then switch meds and even doctors if needed!
822804 tn?1298226302 Do you feel better after taking the Armour vs taking Synthroid? I have been on Synthroid for almost 3 years and I feel terrible...my dosage has been increased many times,I am currently taking 150mcg of Synthroid(the actual brand name not generic) and I still continue to feel the same.I have asked for a script for Armour because I have heard good things about it because it doesnt just have T4 in it,has T1,2,3 and 4.Any help would be greatly appreciated.I have no thyroid..
558402 tn?1227060516 5 Cytomel twice daily. Now my Endo wants to decrease the Synthroid to .50 and keep the Cytomel as is. Why would my TSH be so low, with a normal range T4? My Endo is not really interested in how I feel. I am curious what those of you 'in the know' might think. Thank you!
Avatar n tn I had a total thyroidectomy in October. I am currently taking 112mcg of synthroid. Although my blood work is where the dr wants it to be I cant seem to lose the 15lbs I have gained & everytime I eat my stomach becomes extremely bloated. I have even been asked when I am due! I weighed 120 before surgery & 135 now. I have been reading a lot about Cytomel. What is the criteria for adding Cytomel? Why are some pt's on it & some not?
