Cytomel t3 weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel t3 weight loss

cytomel

Avatar f tn There are usually much better choices, including a T4 type such as synthroid, or a T4/T3 type such as Armour thyroid, or under some conditions, a T3 type such as Cytomel, along with a T4 source. I have no idea where that opinion that cytomel would cause heart problems and osteoporosis. That supposedly is a concern if your TSH is suppressed below the low range limit and stays there for a long while.
Avatar n tn If you are on a synthetic T4 drug like Synthroid and you are not taking a T3 drug like Cytomel, then you may need to find an endo who will test and treat the FT3 levels, so that you can lose the weight.
Avatar f tn my numbers are: TSH 2.3 (.40-4.00); Free T4 .73 (.70-1.8); Free T3 3.1 (2.3-5.0) My doses: Tirosint 50 mcg.; Cytomel 12 mcg/day My thyroid was destroyed roughly 8 years ago; the only problems I have is hair loss and weight gain - I don't overeat, I exercise - I don't eat processed foods - I could eat 1200 calories a day - good calories and put on weight. I grow most of what I eat. Help! I am 65.
894666 tn?1274097896 Has anyone ever had a similar problem. If it is the cytomel, I think I need to stop taking it. I was hoping it would help with weight loss, which is has not.
Avatar n tn Cytomel is not a weight loss script - That is mis understood by many. It has nothing to do with metobolism if your hormones are not balanced. Some may lose weight while on it becuase of the direct T3 and increase in energy - but it shoudl never be Rx's for weight loss I can't believe your doctor gave it to you. DId your labs support the need for T3?
Avatar f tn That can be accomplished with adequate doses of T4 meds, if your body adequately converts T4 to T3. If conversion is inadequate then T3 med like Cytomel can be added, or the patient can switch to a combo, NDT type med containing both T4 and T3. In addition, there are other things that can mimic hypo symptoms and also affect how thyroid hormone is metabolized. A couple of very important ones of those are Vitamin D, and ferritin (a form of iron).
Avatar n tn I wouldn't advise adding cytomel without knowing what your actual thyroid levels are -- that's Free T4, Free T3 and TSH. T3 med (cytomel) is about 4 times more potent than the T4 med (synthroid) and it can really throw you for a loop if you don't need it. It can cause very rapid heart rate, palps, etc. Whenever cytomel is added, the T4 med should be dropped accordingly. Did you receive the cytomel from your doctor or as a script? What did your doctor say about adding it?
Avatar n tn Lupo does not believe or think the free t3 has anything to do with fat loss or weight loss because of the science behind calorie in calorie out, but not everyone is the same--some where along the way I have really slowed my metabolism down and would like to know how to repair it and there has to be some correlation between the Free T3 levels--He says that they don't usually treat based on those numbers because of the cytomel being short lived, so then I would think you would go by the level
Avatar f tn Even though health wise I felt better most of the time had issues with weight gain and most disturbing hair loss. I have almost gone bald and have been trying to adjust meds just to stop hair loss. 6 months back shifted to brand synthroid 62.5 mcg. Felt fine but hair loss didn't stop. Recently read a lot about cytomegalovirus so asked my endo about it. I am prescribed cytomegalovirus 5mcg + 50 mcg synthroid.
Avatar f tn Cytomel really shouldn't be taken for weight loss. It's okay to take some, along with some T4, but you really should try for a balance between the two. Also, you are on a pretty high dose. The increase from 25 to 50 was huge. After two years on Cytomel, do you have any more weight to lose? Do you have peaks and valleys in your energy level throughout the day? How do you take your Cytomel? Do you split it into more than one dose?
Avatar f tn For increasing the basal metabolic rate (BMR) which is required for weight loss, T3 is more important than T4. Higher your T3 levels, the better your BMR. Cytomel is therefore added to Synthroid to effect weight reduction. The effect of Cytomel takes a couple of weeks to set in. Cytomel can be given upto 100 mcg/day. So if you are on10 mcg/d and unable to lose weight it makes sense to increase to 25 mcg/d. Simultaneously Synthroid dose may need to be reduced slightly.
Avatar f tn I had my bi-annual thyroid checkup and my doctor said I was on too much meds due to my weight loss and reduced me to a half Cytomel and 100 mcg Synthoid. Got tested again after 6 weeks and was told I was slightly high but could stay at that level. However I was feeling awful on that (really tired) so I talked to my doctor and agreed to going back to 25mcg Cytomel/75 mcg Synthroid.
Avatar f tn ve been complaining to my doctors for years (literally since 2003) about symptoms of fatigue, hair loss, inability to lose weight, and weight gain. Started testing for thyroid problems in 2003, but they only did the TSH test which always came back normal. Never did the free T4 test until 2005. I'm a concerned about pituitary problems as this is what i have read from various cites (mayo clinic and a couple of other good sites).
Avatar n tn I was experiencing joint pain, substantial hair loss, sensitive to cold and have not been able to loose much weight. I joined weight watchers over nine months ago and my coach told me something was not right. This week I was able to see a endocrinologist and he repeated my labs. Now my TSH is 1.9, he decided to change my synthroid to 100 much and added Cytomel 5mcg twice a day. I’m not familiar with Cytomel, will the addition of this medicine compensate reducing my synthroid?
1015442 tn?1251304491 s the conventional way of treating hypothryoidism. The new doc just went straight to treating the t3 with Cytomel. Many people split their Cytomel. Half in the morning, then wait an hour before eating. Then half an hour before dinner. Your T4 levels are still low. Maybe if you take the Cytomel for a while, and you still have the symptoms you listed (YES, THEY ARE COMMON IN HYPOS!), this new doc will add a T4 drug. If I were you, I'd start the Cytomel.
Avatar f tn If so has it helped in weight loss? I work out so very hard and go to the gym twice a day, The doctor says until my metabolism and thyroid get on track my weight won't change. I have been doing some research on cytomel and am thinking of asking my Dr. if I can try it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar f tn Total T3 is considered obsolete and is of very little value; however, it's relatively low in its range, which indicates that Free T3 might also be low in its range, but it's hard to say without having the actual test. Do you think you could get your doctor to do one. Your FT4 is above mid range, so that, along with the low T3, tells me that you might not convert FT4 to FT3 properly and FT3 is the only hormone the body can actually use.
Avatar m tn My answer to your weight loss question is yes. I know when I took Cytomel in the past that I would lose weight and have more energy. I don't know if this is all in my head but ...yesterday, I took 50mcg of lovothyroxin and cut the cytomel into 3 pieces and took them through out the day. I seem to have more energy last night. This morning I (on my own) took 1 1/2 true synthroid (75 mcg) and a 3rd of a 25mcg of cytomel. I found my labs work from last year July T4 Free Range (.61-1.
Avatar n tn I also started to become very depressed. I was switched to 112 Synthroid and 5 Cytomel. The weight stabilized at 142lb - great! However, the depression is still here, I still get tired, and my toes and fingers get uncontrollably cold lately. I also started getting slightly sick in the morning about an hour after taking the Synthroid. My last blood test showed TSH of 0.1mIU/L.
Avatar f tn I received RAI for hyperthyroid and after two years of trying different meds I finally take armour thyroid 120mg, my blood work is fine but I don't feel fine. I have started taking cytomel 12.5mcg thinking that may give me a little more energy and help with a little weight loss. I'm wondering if anyone has added extra t3 with the armour thyroid and had good results. My doctor doesn't know about this yet...
Avatar f tn - ( , on the 50 mcg Cytomel. I think my adjustment needs to be pretty small. They gave me enough 5 mcg pills to = 30 mcg on a new prescription, but I still have over 2 weeks of the 25 mcg strength left. So I think I will take 35 mcg until I run out of the 25's and see how I feel. If It's OK, then I will have enough 5's to equal 35 mcg for the remainder of the 5-6 weeks until re-test.
Avatar f tn re getting too much T3 is to have free T3 (FT3) tested regularly. Too much T3 usually causes hyperthyroid symptoms (anxiety, weight loss, insomnia, heart palpitations or tachycardia, intolerance to heat. etc. - although these can vary). T3 is about four times more powerful than T4, so it can also get you into trouble that much faster. When on a T3 med, it's doubly important to test FT3 along with FT4 and TSH.
Avatar f tn Hi! I am to start cytomel ( T3). My endo has suggested it with my checkup, I have been SO fatigued ( feeling like I am walking in wet cement), big weight gain ( no energy to exercise), extreme hair loss. She says will also most likely increase my synthyroid too, but one thing at a time. I am going back in two weeks, so I will get copies of my labs ( forgot this time) but she said my TSH was very normal range, free T3 very low, Free T4 low.
