I just had my thyroidectomy a week and a half ago and got my prescription for cytomel. My prescription is for 25 mcg every twelve hours and my doctor said to take it on an empty stomach (4 hours w/o food), no solids for the first hour after taking it, and no calcium or citrus for four hours afterwards. AHHH! How do I do this? I can deal with no milk in my morning coffee, but what about dinner? Any advice or help?
I think that this is just until my RAI in a month or so.

I went out of the country with out my prescription for cytomel. As a result, I did not take it for 5 days. I started back on it today, but have had cold chills (alleviated by aspirin) for the last 3 days. I have no other symptoms such as headache, sore throat, nausea. Could the cold chills be a symptom of withdrawal from cytomel?
I just picked up a 25mcg prescription of Cytomel. I already take 100mcg Synthroid in the morning. What's the best time of day to take the Cytomel? My dr. said in the evening, but I heard it causes insomnia if taken that late. Also, should I take the whole dose at once or split it in half?
t think I am tolerating Armour that well, I asked my doctor for an alternative. He wrote me a prescription for 50 mcg levothyroxine per day plus 20 mg of Cytomel. It seems too off-balance to me, when my T4 and T3 are both low normal. I haven't taken it yet because I am scared to. I just keep on with the Armour? What do you think of this?
In answer to your question regarding T3 meds, while there are sites online that say they sell cytomel without a prescription, I would never buy from them, because I have no idea what they are really selling...
There are also some glandular products that are sold over the counter, but they are supposed to have the actual hormone content removed and are simply ground up tissue.
In short, T3 products sold in the U.S require a prescription.
Just about every time I went in she would talk about not understanding the cytomel prescription. I just went for another tsh test and she decided not to prescribe the cytomel and only the synthroid. I spoke with the nurse and asked if the test included a t3 test and were my levels off. The test did not include a t3 and they said that the tsh was enough and if it was normal they had no reason to do a t3 test.
I was wondering if I could get your opinion on my labs. I currently take 100 mg of Synthroid and 5 mcg of Cytomel. I am feeling a little hyper. When my TSH goes below 1, I feel like I have a little too much medication. Also, my Vitamin D is low at 25, and I am taking prescription D once a week. My question is from the labs below, do you think it would be better to stay on the 100 mg of Synthroid and drop the Cytomel, or stay on 5 mcg of Cytomel and drop the Synthroid to 88mg? Thank you.
After 1 month I felt fine so I went ahead and refilled the prescription for 240mg. It was less expensive to get 3 months (insurance did not cover compound prescription) and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the armour for refills. No pharmacy in my area has it in stock. Everyone seems to be hoarding in case they can no longer find it. I wish my physician would have given me 60 mg to leave room for adjustment.
When it clears, you may have hyper symptoms, but you just decrease your dosage. Those who are trying Cytomel, or a low dose of Cytomel and have RT3 issues may not be giving it long enough. Three months feels like eternity when you are short of breath, but it may not take that long to start feeling better. In my case, my ND/MD took me OFF of the thyroid meds I was on, but she hasn't put me back on anything yet.

I seriously question the Cytomel prescription without an FT3 test. Find someone qualified to treat thyroid. With your FT4 being so low, I'd think about a T4 med (Synthroid, etc.) way before I'd prescribe Cytomel (but, then again, I'm a patient, not a doctor).
hi. i'm no longer living in the STates so i don't have a US doctor to prescribe me Cytomel. i'm scared of ordering from sites that don't ask for a prescription because i don't want to get junk. Can anyone recommend an online site that i'll know i'm getting a brand name fda approved drug? thanks!
Today I tried to refill my prescription and found that Thyrolar is not available and I am unsure if it will ever be available. I have an appointment to see my internist on Monday and would like to go armed with good information. My pharmacist recommended Synthroid with Cytomel. I had been taking Thyrolar 3 for many years and was in the last year changed to Thyrolar 2. I am 60 years old, 5'1" and weigh 135.
So it's been over two weeks since I started taking the whole 5mcg pill, and I feel no such "high." I don't experience an afternoon "crash" either since I feel exactly the same in the mornings as I do in the afternoon. It's almost as if I haven't been taking cytomel at all. On February 3rd, my results were: Free T4 1.20 0.82-1.77 40%
Free T3 2.8 2.0-4.4 33%
My TSH was also 2.76 (0.45-4.50) even though on 1/20 it was 0.45 (0.30-5.10).
About two weeks ago, someone in another community on another website was sure that there are OTC supplements containing actual thyroid hormones (pig, cow thryoid hormones). I am very sure that it's illegal to have any of these hormones without a prescription. I remember reading months ago that thyroid hormones are regulated by the FDC and that any OTC supplement claiming to support the thyroid must have the actual hormones extracted.
I think I need to have something like cytomel to add t3 to my meds. My question is....if i bought some of the otc pills, is it like cytomel or Armour? Would it hurt to take extra pills like that in addition to my levothyroxine? Should i ask my doctor? Why can you buy natural thyroid hormone products and yet need a prescription for others? I just dont want to do something stupid.
Oh yes- forgot to add I am on only name brand synthyroid and cytomel. My endo will not write prescription for generics, says they vary too much - just as you experienced.
