Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel pills

cytomel

Avatar f tn Does anyone know why Cytomel jumps from a 5 mcg pill to 25 mcgs? I thought that was unusual. I am currently taking this T3 med; a starting doage in addition to T4. I can only hope and pray the T3 addition will lift my symptoms as a lot of you have suggested it may. Looking forward to your answers.
1369218 tn?1282423884 Cytomel comes in different dosages, just like other medications, so just saying you went from 2 to 1, isn't enough. Your cytomel pills are 5 mcg ea? No, cytomel does not come in smaller doses than 5 mcg, but some people have been successful splitting the pills. When you were taking 2 pills/day -- did you take them both at once? Many of us find that splitting our dosage into multiple doses, works best.

458072 tn?1291415186 Has anyone used Cytomel for anxiety? If so, would you mind sharing your experiences. I am having major anxiety and wondered if this would be of any benefit. Thanks for your input.
Avatar n tn When TSH is too high Cytomel dose might be too low. If TSH was optimal F/T-3 would be high and F/T-4 low. Cytomel may decrease T4. I don't think your Cytomel/Synthroid ratio is correct. Unless other things are going on; you didn't care to share your levels.(?) T3 dose should be split and taken every 6 to 8 hour interval, if not time released. For instance, if the dose is 25 mcg, then take 5 mcg. pills, four times a day or every 6 hours.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to half the dosage but I still cannot sleep and am now taking sleeping pills as well. I usually take the cytomel in the morning and I read somewhere that it can help to take it at night, which doesn't make sense to me. Also don't synthroid and cytomel have different hormones? I also find I am feeling much more irritable which I suppose could be the sleep problem but I'm wondering if it is the medication.
Avatar n tn 5 mcg is the smallest dose of cytomel you can get. You can try quartering the cytomel, though it's rather difficult with those tiny pills. I have done it though. I've never heard of tonsilitis being a side effect of cytomel; do you have a website or anything stating that? It's not unusual to have symptoms return when changing doses/meds, until your body gets used to them. Even though cytomel is fast acting, it can still take some time to adjust to it.
Avatar f tn I think I need to have something like cytomel to add t3 to my meds. My question is....if i bought some of the otc pills, is it like cytomel or Armour? Would it hurt to take extra pills like that in addition to my levothyroxine? Should i ask my doctor? Why can you buy natural thyroid hormone products and yet need a prescription for others? I just dont want to do something stupid.
Avatar f tn It looks like your Synthroid dose might be a little high; your FT4 is over range. At the same time, your FT3is just midrange, which can be a little low, expecially when coming off NT with its T3 support. It's possible that conversion will kick in and improve if you give it a little time. I've always found that my FT3 lags behind changes in my FT4. On the other hand, you might ask your doctor about decreasing your Synthroid a little and adding in some Cytomel.
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo, I hope you can help me better understand my lab results. I had a TT in October for papillary carcinoma. This was followed by RAI even though the nodule was small (12mm) and had not spread to the lymph nodes. After RAI, I was put on 125mcg L-thyroxine and up to 75mcg cytomel a day. As I tapered off the cytomel, my hypothyroidism symptoms began to return. Blood work was done (TSH 0.
822804 tn?1298226302 It just does not work to take Cytomel every other day for that reason. In fact, most people on Cytomel. even very low doses of Cytomel, split the dose into at least two doses per day so they don't experience the "rush" and "crash" that happens with just one dose. I'm afraid that taking your Cytomel before your test probably inflated your TT3. It seems your doctor doesn't have any idea on how to dose Cytomel.
1058524 tn?1285187240 I can't take Cytomel past one pm or I can't get to sleep until midnight. That stuff is strong. I suggest taking it earlier, and then breaking the 25 into three or four doses. Maybe 25 in the am. 12.5 before lunch and 12.5 before dinner. Also, I don't think you will feel your best until you get back on the Levo. How long until you are finished with treatment and can get back on the Levo? I am thinking of quitting my Cytomel and just going with the stronger Synthroid.
Avatar n tn I just started cytomel (5 mcg x 2) but I am having very bad headaches. I cut my pills in 4 pieces to see if the headaches would get better but physically I seem to need the full 5 mcg to feel better. My eyes also look a little puffy too. Has anyone had headaches from this drug and been able to work up to a higher dose eventually? I'm also on 88 mcg of synthroid.
Avatar f tn Just wanted to share.....I've been on Synthroid with 5 mg of Cytomel everyday for the past few years and felt pretty darn stinky not to mention losing hair by the mounds. Started Tirosent about 5 days ago and dare I say it.....I think I feel better. Things are finally starting to move along digestively (if you know what I mean) and I don't feel so achy anymore. I'm still waiting to see if there's any change with the hairloss but I'm cautiously optimistic. I think I like it!
Avatar f tn My ENT prescribed Cytomel for me to take from now until my RAI treatment (I just had total thyroidectomy 10 days ago and have a small papilliary cancer w/ follicular variant). Anyway, I'm not having any symptoms, except hair loss, since my surgery and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and start taking the Cytomel now or should I wait until I actually feel bad and need it? What is everyone's experience with Cytomel?
Avatar f tn I find it hard to take the 3 pills a day because of my work schedule. I read not to take cytomel at night because it interferes with sleep. Is this correct? Thanks for the help.

Avatar f tn Until a month ago, I was taking 20 mcg of Cytomel, but insurance changed and taking four 5 mcg pills a day was significantly more expensive than one 25 mcg a day. The doctor was cautiously okay with this. My problem is that I now seem to be having some symptoms of over-replacement - hot when others are cold, am now underweight, hyperactive and a little anxious/obsessive.
Avatar n tn If there are NO symptoms of hypothyroidism, but TSH levels are high (T3/T4 normal), is it O.K. not to take Levothyroxine (or other thyroid treatment)? Husband is happy, peaceful, energetic, healthy, in shape, etc. Only "symptoms" of hypothyroidism are high cholesterol and peripheral neuropathy. Both are usually from something else and neither goes away when he takes Levothyroxine.
908150 tn?1243182960 I left it at 75mcg Synthroid and had her add the Cytomel. My question is would it be advantagous to increase the synthroid first and stay at 5mcg Cytomel, than if that doesn't help move to increase the Cytomel? I sure appreciate everyones feedback, this forum has been a great source of information!
Avatar f tn t want my doc to know I saw someone else or tried the cytomel. He would not be understanding. The cytomel made me feel worse. It gave me more energy, but way too much inflammation. I could barely breathe out of my nose because my sinuses were so inflammed and small pills were getting stuck in my throat. I also was having bad acid reflux. I can already tell the physical effects of the cytomel are wearing off because I'm back to feeling tired again. I was only on the cytomel for 4 weeks.
Avatar n tn thanks, i've tried synthroid and im allergic to something in those pills....i haven't checked about thyolar, ive actually never heard of it...what exactly is it? t3 t4?
Avatar f tn I am 28 yo female, I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago due to non cancerous nodules growing on it. I've been on synthroid since I was 11 yo. Everything was fine until I went off birth control pills. All of a sudden I had a hard time tolerating my 137 mcg dose of synthroid. I switched to armour thyroid, but couldn't tolerate any more than 60 mg. I felt great on just 60 mg, however my TSH shot up from 1 to almost 8.
Avatar f tn therefore, addition of a T3 component would be helpful. If you 5 mcg cytomel was too much, you might try splitting the pills and taking only 1/2 and see if that helps. It's not unusual for patients to report feeling worse after a dosage change, for a while until the body adjusts to the new dosage.
Avatar f tn Hi, I need some help! Can I come off cytomel cold turnkey without side effects? My primary doctor put me on cytomel for chronic fatique/depression. He started me on 25mcg. I felt better so he increased to 50mcg. I said to him at my last appt that it didn't seem to be working and he said we'd go to 75mcg. He said "we can go to 100mcg and then we'll check your thyroid sometime".
