Cytomel only

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel only

cytomel

Avatar n tn s on the floor of the range and they think putting you on cytomel only is a good thing? Your FT3 is only at 47% of its range, when the recommendation is upper half to upper third of the range... you have a long way to go to get to the recommended levels for either FT3 or FT4, so it's no wonder your symptoms don't go away...
Avatar n tn the problem w/ cytomel alone is that it is short acting (in and out in 12 hours) while T4 has a long half-life -- so if T3 is used, T4 should be used in combination. That being said I have 2-3 patients on cytomel alone but they take it 2-3 x /day (ie if 15mcg is your dose, take 5mcg 3x/day).
Avatar f tn Why someone who is hypothyroid with low T4 and also T3 and with poor conversion into T3 is not suplemented with Cytomel only? If T3 is an active form do we need T4 ( synthroid) at all if there is poor conversion of course?
4524270 tn?1355878350 to cut Armour out first and immediately take Cytomel equaling the T3 I was getting from NDT plus the current Cytomel dose, or weaning off Armour and taking only the amount of Cytomel that I have been taking? Or some other option? I would appreciate any knowledgeable opinions.
Avatar f tn Going on a T3 only medication is a somewhat extreme regimen when the patient has a big problem with Reverse T3 dominance, and has been unable to correct it by other methods. What were the conditions that made your doctor think it best to put you on Cytomel only? Do you have lab results from before going on the Cytomel that you can post, along with their reference ranges? Also, what symptoms were you having before starting on the Cytomel? Are you having any symptoms now?
Avatar m tn I would like to continue with the Synthroid and add a T3 only med such as Cytomel and am wondering if anyone has a thought about what a good starting dose would be for Cytomel? Is it recommended to dose twice daily for Cytomel and will adding this med cause my need for Synthroid to be reduced? Thanks!
Avatar f tn s fairly rare for somone to be on Cytomel only. Usually a small dose of Cytomel is added to the Synthroid, which may have to be reduced to accomodate the Cytomel. Cytomel (T3) is very fast-acting, so it has to be taken several times throughout the day if taken by itself. This leads to intra-day ups and downs in hormone levels. Do you have the results of your latest lab tests (FT3, FT4 and TSH) and their reference ranges?
Avatar f tn advice from you guys, so I cut my synthroid in half and taking only 6 mcg of cytomel. but I have been taking 1/2 of cytomel in the morning and breaking the other half in two. so yeah that is 25 mg. the only thing I notice different is at the end of the day I feel like i am carring a huge boulder. apparently I am up to come down so hard. will these meds eventually help? only 3 weeks into cytomel . should I be patient?? my labs are not due for another month. thanks for the help!
Avatar n tn I was recently on 175mcg of Synthoid and lowered to 150mcg of Synthroid and the dr added only 5mcg of Cytomel. Maybe get a second opionion. Try asking the thyroid dr on the expert sight.
Avatar f tn Did he prescribe Cytomel only? I like the above responders was on Cytomel only prior to RAI. It's T3 and can make you jittery. It's VERY short lived in your body. I now take T3 in conjunction with Levothyroxine - T4 (150mcg Levo & 15mcg cytomel). I have been AROUND THE BLOCK with meds! I'm now back where I started (with T3/T4 ratio changes...) after giving only Synthroid (hated it!) and Levoxyl (the T4 drugs) a whack.
988694 tn?1332359479 Does anybody know a T3 only medicine without fillers? I was added Cytomel and my NT was reduced to 2 grains due to RT3. So far feeling awful, but I am more concern, despite all the pain and discomfort I am in, about Cytomel causing me allergies. My nose is itching and I have been sneezing. I had a similar episode a couple of years ago and I quit it. I cannot do compound pharmacy since I have to travel and it is too much trouble. Any idea about an existent hypoallergenic T3 only medicine?
Avatar f tn I have been on cytomel ever since I had my TT for cancer in September '07, just a month b4 you. Right after the TT, I was on cytomel only, then post RAI, both cytomel and levothyroxine. You don't say why you "tapered off" the cytomel, which is interesting. I actually asked my endo to get off of the cytomel and just up the levothyroxine. He had wanted me to take half a 25mcg table in the morning and half in the early afternoon.
Avatar n tn If not, why are you on T3-only med (Cytomel)? What were your labs a week ago before going on the Cytomel, and were you on any other meds then?
Avatar f tn My doc just put me on cytomel. She said to take it with Armour. Something about I need more t3ort4.. Can someone explain? And, I hear you guys talk about " grains ". What is a grain? I am on 60 mg of Armour and 5 mcg cytomel. My TSH came down from 7.04 to 1.92 in first 6 weeks of Armour only..that's good right? She said my TPO was 45 though....? Help.
734073 tn?1278896325 Katie 21919 just posted at the bottom of a thread that ( yesterday 9/1) she was going to add 50 mcg of Cytomel that her doctor just added to her Synthroid. However he only reduced her Synthroid by 75 mcg! The math is not adding up here. He was also telling her to take this large dose of Cytomel all at once! Sounds dangerous and crazy to me! She was on 225 mcg Synthroid and he reduced her to 150 mcg.
Avatar f tn m on cytomel also - 5 mcg. normally, cytomel is split into 2-3 doses, however, with only 5 mcg, splitting it would only give you 2.5 mcg/dose and I'm not sure that would do much good for you.
Avatar f tn what were your lab results before you started with the cytomel? How low was your free t3? A typical start dosage is only 5 mcg and work up from there only if needed. You cannot pay attention to the tsh when on a t3 med...it will supress it and make you look hyper. When on combination meds, you can only treat by the free t4 and free t3. I have never heard of using cytomel to add to the effectiveness of antidepressants. I do know that sometimes depression can be caused by low t3 levels.
Avatar f tn What is food and supplements are safe to consume with Cytomel. I am actively trying to lose weight through diet and exercise and feel like I am fighting with a brick wall. Very defeating! I eat certain things or take different supplements, I get extreme reactions. Please advise. . .
1129774 tn?1279831762 Yes you can take both together, but keep in mind that Cytomel is fast acting and will only be in your system for about 6 hrs or so......I take my first dosage in the am with my sythroid, and my second dosage in the afternoon. I am on 100mcg synthroid and 20mcg cytomel.
Avatar n tn Hi kimberlyn1234, I am on both Synthroid and Cytomel. I was just reduced to 75 Syn and remain at 25 Cytomel. My doctor explained it to me like this: Synthroid is a synthetic T4. Your thyroid works to turn this into T3. Cytomel is a synthetic T3, so it goes right to work without having to go through the "processing". I didn't start on Cytomel but it was added a few years after my diagnosis because my T3's were still low.
Avatar n tn Could going off of cytomel after so many years do this? I am on synthroid now (low dosage) and one cytomel (25 mcg). maybe it isn't enough. i don't know what to do. thank you.
Avatar n tn You need to post your labs and ranges. I take 15mg of cytomel and 50mcg of levothyroxine. I am not balanced yet but cytomel has helped tremendously.
558402 tn?1227060516 which is about 105 Synthroid (Cytomel is roughly 3 times of Synthroid, so 5,5 is about 30 Synthroid, and you only need Cytomel when your FT3 is low and not go with FT4), if you still feel hypo, increase it again accordingly. You should also get TSH, FT3 and FT4 test so you know what you are doing. What are your current blood test results anyway ? if you can post them here, may be some one can help you. there are a lot of thyroid experienced people on this forum.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know why Cytomel jumps from a 5 mcg pill to 25 mcgs? I thought that was unusual. I am currently taking this T3 med; a starting doage in addition to T4. I can only hope and pray the T3 addition will lift my symptoms as a lot of you have suggested it may. Looking forward to your answers.
