Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel mcg

cytomel

1070570 tn?1283436213 I was up to 125 mcg synthroid, then dropped back to 75 synthroid, then switched to 75 generic levo and added 10 mcg cytomel. That was too much cytomel, so dropped back to 5 mcg cytomel and switched to generic; then up to 88 mcg levo, staying with 5 mcg generic cytomel. Am currently on 100 mcg Tirosint and 5 mcg generic cytomel. I take the Tirosint first thing in the morning, per instructions (my day starts 3:30 am). I take my T3 med about 7-7:30 am.
Avatar f tn m on 10 mcg of generic T3 (same as cytomel) and I take a 5 mcg pill in the morning, with my T4 med and another 5 mcg pill around noon. That keeps me going all day.
Avatar n tn my endo lowered me to 50 mcg levo, and added 10 mcg cytomel. I was later dropped to 5 mcg cytomel and my levo was upped to 75 mcg. I am currently alternating 75 mcg with 88 mcg levo and still on the 5 mcg cytomel. I've read that synthroid/levo should be lowered by about 25 mcg for each 5 mcg cytomel added. So your synthroid was not lowered nearly enough to add 25 mcg cytomel. Are you taking the whole 25 mcg cytomel at one time or splitting it throughout the day?
Avatar n tn 90 mg of Armour is 37.5 mcg of Cytomel plus 150 mcg of levo. http://thyroid.about.com/library/drugs/blconversionchart.
Avatar m tn Before this, my medication was 50 mcg Synthroid and 15 mcg Cytomel (I increased the Cytomel from 10 to 15 mcg on Friday). Now, the doctor wants me to do 50 mcg Synthroid and 25 mcg Cytomel on a daily basis. What do you all think? The only recent labwork is this: (TSH range 0.40-4.50 // free T4 range 0.8-1.8) 07/07/11 TSH 2.91 -- Free T4 0.9 T3 Uptake 34 (Range 22-35 Percent) Free T3 2.9 (Range 2.3-4.
1956603 tn?1325036186 Okay, these are the latest results as on Jan 31, 2011. My currents meds are Tirosint 150 mcg and Cytomel 5 mcg (two times daily). I've been on TIrosint 150 mcg for 4 months now. My doctor added the Cytomel 5 mcg (two times daily) in the end of December 2011. TSH 0.122 0.450 - 4.500 uIU/mL T4,FREE(DIRECT) 1.99 0.82 - 1.77 ng/dL TRIIODOTHYRONINE, 5.1 2.0 - 4.
Avatar n tn That is, 100 mcg Synthroid and 25 mcg Cytomel and in which is a starting dose combination. When TSH is too high Cytomel dose might be too low. If TSH was optimal F/T-3 would be high and F/T-4 low. Cytomel may decrease T4. I don't think your Cytomel/Synthroid ratio is correct. Unless other things are going on; you didn't care to share your levels.(?) T3 dose should be split and taken every 6 to 8 hour interval, if not time released.
734073 tn?1278896325 That's a LOT of Cytomel. 50 mcg of Cytomel is roughly equivalent to 200 mcg Synthroid. You're right, the reduction in Synthroid is not enough to compensate for the Cytomel addition. I'd certainly start out lower and split the dose. Most people we hear from taking it split their dose...of course there are always individual differences and you have to experiment with what works best for you. A one-to-three ratio of T3 to T4 is also skewed.
Avatar n tn I recently added Cytomel to my Synthroid. Previously, I was taking Synthroid 112mcg 6 x weekly. Dr. reduced to 88 mcg, 7 x and Cytomel 5 mg 2 x daily. The full 5 mg cause real anxiety and palpatations. I was told I could split the pill (challenging! lol) and so far, I am taking only 2.5 approx, once in the am. Will the anxiety settle down? I am considering taking Xanax to level out, as I am not feeling so great, with the edginess.
Avatar m tn No, I was doing 5 mcg Cytomel and 50 mcg Synthroid first thing in the morning and then another 5 mcg in the afternoon after 2 or 3 p.m.
Avatar f tn For every 25 mcg of levo you drop, you add in approximately 5 mcg of Cytomel. So, your 200 mcg of levo went to 150 mcg, and you should have added 10-12.5 mcg Cytomel. Cytomel is about four times more powerful than levo. You can't just lower the levo and add in the same amount of Cytomel. And, yes, Cytomel (any T3 med) will have a tendency to exacerbate heart issues. Ask your doctor about lowering the Cytomel as soon as possible.
Avatar m tn Yes, that is what I suggest you ask the doctor about. And also important to get tested for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking my synthyroid and cytomel in am. I am only on 2.5 mcg to start ( hx of tachycardia so endo wants to go slowly). I am to go up to the whole 5 mcg pill if no problems after a week of 1/2 dose. I go back in several weeks to endo for recheck. I feel no more energy than before, only a little more "clear headed", not so foggy minded and by early afternoon I am still sooo tired. need a nap. Would it be better to add this 2nd dose around noon??
Avatar n tn etc even though my FT3 was still not even mid range yet and I was having hypo symptoms. I had to drop from 10 mcg cytomel down to 5 mcg and raise levo to 75. I just saw my endo last week and both my FT4 and FT3 have finally reached mid range, but I wanted to bump them up just a bit more, without tipping the scale; we left the cytomel at 5, and raised the levo to 75 & 88 on alternating days, which comes out to 81.5 mcg/day.
Avatar f tn re taking 20 mcg (two 10 mcg) in the morning and only 5 mcg at night? Why do take Cytomel at night? Because T3 is fast acting, it's typically split between a morning and noon/early afternoon dose, but avoided at night so it doesn't disturb sleep. Please clarify your med schedule and dosage, if you don't mind. Why were you dropped all the way from 75 mcg Synthroid to 25 mcg?
1070570 tn?1283436213 So, if you subtract 25 mcg of Cytomel from your regimen, you ought to be adding more like 100 mcg of Synthroid. It sounds like your doctor might have left you undermedicated in the switch to Synthroid. I have no personal experience with Cytomel-only therapy, but I do know of people who have been treated with T3-only temporarily. Dosage is very individual, and what others are taking will not apply to you. Food does not affect Cytomel like it does Synthroid.
Avatar f tn One grain (60mg) of Armour contains 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. So your current dosage totals approx. 76 mcg of T4 and 18 mcg of T3. If the doctor is trying to increase your FT3 level by switching you to Synthroid and Cytomel, why is your new dosage lower in T3, but with a big increase in T4. If you are already not adequately converting T4 to T3, resulting in FT3 lower than wanted, then I don't see how this helps at all.
Avatar n tn , like the recent Armour script, is 60 g, and the Liothyonine (generic Cytomel) is upped from 10, to 15 mcg daily (5 mcg/3 x daily). I've done some reading, and it would apprear this is something that some doctors have done. Its just super odd, to me, on many levels.
1369218 tn?1282423884 In fact some doctors have their patients take 1/2 in morning and the other 1/2 at bedtime. I prefer to take mine about 6 hours apart. You ahve to remember that 5 mcg of cytomel is approximately the same as 20- 25 mcg of T4 medicine. I think that it was a big mistake to add another 5 mcg when you did. That is a huge increase in meds all at once. If it was me I would go back to 5 mcg daily split in 2 dosages. I use to get horrible heart palps from being hypo.
Avatar f tn Once you get the proper tests, please post them here, so we can help evaluate them. "Dr. did decrease the synthroid from 112 to 100 when i started taking the cytomel 5 mcg." Note that T4 should be decreased by 20-25 mcg for every 5 mcg of T3.. yours was only reduced by 12 mcg. Maybe 88 mcg T4 would have been a better choice. Always, only ever change one (1) thing at a time, otherwise, you have no idea which change is affecting you.
Avatar f tn I couldn't agree more with Ericamegan. 25 mcg is a huge starting dose, and I'd say your doctor really is "not too familiar" with Cytomel. There is no such thing as a "full dose" of Cytomel. Often, people add 5-10 mcg, and that makes them feel better, and it's all they ever need. My PCP added Cytomel to my T4 once briefly. She wasn't "too familiar", either. She looked up the dose on the computer and wanted to give me 25 mcg.
Avatar m tn The change from alternating 90mg/120mg of Armour to 125 mcg Tirosint and 25 mcg Cytomel actually represents a considerable increase in both T4 and T3. The Armour you've been taking contains roughly 65 mcg of T4 and 16 mcg of T3 per day. The conversion chart assumes, as you thought, that you're replacing the Armour with Tirosint alone. If you're adding in T3 at the same time, the chart doesn't work. Do you have your lab results to post?
