Cytomel instead of synthroid

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel instead of synthroid

cytomel

Avatar n tn Just be wary of taking the Cytomel too late in the afternoon or you will probably have issues sleeping.
1070570 tn?1283436213 So, if you subtract 25 mcg of Cytomel from your regimen, you ought to be adding more like 100 mcg of Synthroid. It sounds like your doctor might have left you undermedicated in the switch to Synthroid. I have no personal experience with Cytomel-only therapy, but I do know of people who have been treated with T3-only temporarily. Dosage is very individual, and what others are taking will not apply to you. Food does not affect Cytomel like it does Synthroid.
734073 tn?1278896325 That's a LOT of Cytomel. 50 mcg of Cytomel is roughly equivalent to 200 mcg Synthroid. You're right, the reduction in Synthroid is not enough to compensate for the Cytomel addition. I'd certainly start out lower and split the dose. Most people we hear from taking it split their dose...of course there are always individual differences and you have to experiment with what works best for you. A one-to-three ratio of T3 to T4 is also skewed.
Avatar f tn Yes, I did wait until after my labs to take my Cytomel and Synthroid. A month ago I started out on 25mcg of cytomel, which I found out was too much, so I went to 12.5, then 6.25. So I've been taking it for a while now and the acid reflux has gone on for over a week. I didn't have this problem before I started taking cytomel. I do think I'm still slightly hypo because of all the inflammation and fatigue.
1070570 tn?1283436213 You need more synthroid. You are on too much cytomel and not enough synthroid. Never mind about your reverse t3 unless it reaches high normal to above normal range. The way your meds and levels are, you are having both hyper and hypo symptoms. Here is the rule of thumb where your ranges should be: Free T4 mid normal range Free T4 mid to high normal range When on t3 med you cannot go by the TSH as it will make you look hyper.
Avatar f tn I take 137 mcg of Synthroid and my doc added 5mcg of Cytomel because my t3 was very low. I took all 5 mcg in the morning with my Synthroid and within 5 days I was a mess. Heart pounding like crazy and shaky. Called the doc and he told me to take 1/2 of the Cytomel to see if it made a difference. I decided to take 1/4. Did that for a week and felt fine. Started 1/2 and two days later I'm a mess again. Not sure what I'm gonna do now. Hopefully you will have better luck than I have.
Avatar f tn He added 1/2 of a 25 mcg tablet of Cytomel ONCE a day and lowered my Synthroid to .75 mcg. I just started yesterday and after reading some things on the internet, I decided to take the half of pill - one half at a time - morning and afternoon. So, I am taking a little over 6 mcg twice a day. I don't want to get any heart palpitations and hoping the Cytomel can help me feel better. I am basically exhausted, just feel flu-like, hard to function or want to do anything.
Avatar n tn I never got the chance to do the Thyrogen shot, but was told if I need another dose of RAI in Jan I get the chance to do that instead of going threw a month of craziness. I hope you have no problems on the Cytomel and good luck to you with your upcoming RAI.
Avatar f tn I have been on 37.5mcg of Synthroid and 5 mcg of Cytomel , I was on Armour before reformulation and felt terrific for the 17 yrs I was on it. I have been on this Cytomel & Synthroid combo for 4 yrs and I have notice I feel like I am craving the cytomel . I have been trying to get back on Armour but the Cytome is playing on my head. and I can't seem to get myself to change.. Anybody else feel this way??
Avatar f tn I got to these levels after only 3 weeks so im sure my T4 will continue to climb. I have Cytomel 25mg and was thinking of taking a lower dose of synthroid with a small dose of cytomel. Any comments would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn s, it will also depend on how much of your thyroid is destroyed, etc. I am on 100 Synthroid and 5 Cytomel. I tried 10 Cytomel and it was just too strong. My body is doing a pretty fair job of converting my T4 to T3, therefore, I don't need much Cytomel.
Avatar n tn I am having trouble with the current regimen he proposed and am right now only able to take 75 of synthroid and 5 cytomel instead of 10. I will go see him in a couple of days but given the labs I list below I just wondered if anyone here agreed with my assesment that I need to take more t4 and less t3. Also, should I switch my t4 brand to something else? Many thanks for reading all of this.
Avatar n tn I read that Cytomel is four times as potent as Synthroid. So lowering your Synthroid by 25 and putting you on 25 of Cytomel doesnt compute right. I was recently on 175mcg of Synthoid and lowered to 150mcg of Synthroid and the dr added only 5mcg of Cytomel. Maybe get a second opionion. Try asking the thyroid dr on the expert sight.
Avatar f tn I have been placed on cytomel as an interim replacement until the RAI treatment and I am wondering if it would be possible to stay on this instead of going on the Synthroid, as I am feeling great right now and would like to continue with the cytomel as I have not gained any weight and my energy level is perfect. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn i am on the generic for 3 weeks now and I really feel no different. the doc gave me 25 mg of cytomel to add to my 75mcg of synthroid. advice from you guys, so I cut my synthroid in half and taking only 6 mcg of cytomel. but I have been taking 1/2 of cytomel in the morning and breaking the other half in two. so yeah that is 25 mg. the only thing I notice different is at the end of the day I feel like i am carring a huge boulder. apparently I am up to come down so hard.
903476 tn?1242237037 The dr keeps saying we have to take it slow. One of my other doctors said I needed cytomel instead. Will the cytomel regulate my thyroid back to normal? I've been 110lbs my adult life then all of sudden I'm 150 and aging a pant size per week. Cut out all sugar grains flour. All other labs are normal hyponatremia under control.
Avatar n tn My primary care Dr. then put me on 150 mcg of Synthroid and 15 mcg of cytomel per day. I ended up with WAY too much thyroid hormone in my system after 2 to 3 weeks (TSH 0.04). It was awful - rushing heart beat, couldn't concentrate or think, highly fatigued, hot all the time. As a result, once I figured it out it was the medication, I totally went off thyroid for 3 weeks to clean out my system.
Avatar f tn What dose cytomel are you on? What dose synthroid? How long have you been on both meds/dosages? Do you have current labs that you can post, so we can see what your actual hormone levels are? Be sure to include reference ranges, which vary lab to lab and have to be posted with results.
Avatar f tn I have never felt well since my TT and am wondering if i should try synthroid with cytomel or stick it out with naturethroid. Anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar f tn Hi, I have been treated for Hashi's for just over 3 years (June '05). I was started on just synthroid then added cytomel in Dec '06. Adjustments made at first and things were good until this past Feb when after blood work my doctor said my TSH was too low and he dropped my synthroid. Repeat blood work in early May showed TSH still low so another reduction in synthroid. Blood work at end of June again low TSH = decrease in synthroid. Late August TSH .12 (.45 - 4.5).
Avatar f tn Could I take an extra 5 cytomel in the am. and increase my synthroid to 0.075 mcg every other day instead of the 0.05. I currently take 0.
Avatar f tn I just picked up a 25mcg prescription of Cytomel. I already take 100mcg Synthroid in the morning. What's the best time of day to take the Cytomel? My dr. said in the evening, but I heard it causes insomnia if taken that late. Also, should I take the whole dose at once or split it in half?
Avatar f tn 4)PG/ML Endo wants me to continue with 75mcg of synthroid. She also added 5 mcg of cytomel, taking 2.5 mcg twice per day. I know cytomel will up T3 levels, but am I moving too quickly? Should I take this along with synthroid or wait an hour. I forgot to ask her. I'm starting to become anxious. Will I experience a new set of symptoms? I'm not completely symptom free yet.
252327 tn?1250183976 He has added cytomel to my synthroid, I am taking 100mcg synthroid plus 5 of cytomel and in two weeks add another 5 of cytomel. I already feel better, no more brain fog, tiredness and seems like the extra weight in the middle is disappearing. I only weigh 125 lbs but already 6 days later I feel much more toned. I was wondering who is taking cytomel with synthroid.??
