Cytomel for low t3

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel for low t3

cytomel

Avatar n tn If not, why are you on T3-only med (Cytomel)? What were your labs a week ago before going on the Cytomel, and were you on any other meds then?
Avatar f tn I know Cytomel is supplement for T3 and stronger. If anyone has experiences with Cytomel, your input is greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn My thyroid labs are normal too, except for very low T3. It makes me mad that that has been ignored for so long. Hoping you're feeling much better!
Avatar f tn Thanks for the response. I guess I should've made it more clear that I've been taking Cytomel along w/ Synthroid since February & since then my FT3 level still dropped a little & my FT4 dropped a lot (labs as of 4-28-11). I felt pretty good for a few weeks after adding the Cytomel (better mood, more energy, less hair loss), but recently have begun feeling bad again. Im just wondering why this happened. Doesn't FT3 normally rise with Cytomel?
Avatar f tn My TSH has also been extremely low since starting Cytomel. My T3 and T4 are fine, and have been for years. Actually it started when I switched from Synthroid to Armour Thyroid, then to Thyrolar. I feel too much of a difference with the additional T3 and do not want to go back to only taking Synthroid. I tried cutting back the Synthroid as recommended by the endocrinologist I was seeing. She refused to believe that it was the Cytomel, and just kept insisting I was hyperthyroid.
Avatar f tn It appears that you/your doctor are basing your dosage strictly on your TSH levels. This is usually a recipe for disaster and generally, gets you nowhere, as you can see by how your levels are bouncing around. You need to have the biologically active thyroid hormones tested. These would be Free T3 and Free T4 - not total T3 or T4. TSH is a pituitary hormone and fluctuates greatly, even throughout a day's time.
Avatar n tn m going for a retest and I am asking that the free T3 and free T4 tests be done. If my free T3 is still low, would it be better to take Cytomel along with my Levoxyl (100 mcg); or should I try Armour, even though I know my ins. will not cover it? I've been on Levoxyl for about 10 years, after finding my TSH was mildly elevated on a screening.
Avatar f tn First, please check the T3 result you posted. Also, is that Total T3 or Free T3? Also, please post the reference range shown on the lab report. Please post any other thyroid test results and their ranges as well. What is your daily dosage of Cytomel?
Avatar n tn What does it mean when your TSH is low but the T3 & T4 are in the normal range? What other tests can be done if there might be a pituitary gland problem? I take Levothyroxine and Cytomel.
Avatar f tn My thyroid doctor determined high reverse T3, small amount of antibodies, and generally low range T3 and T4, TSH varied high to low. Gradually switched from synthroid to cytomel only, and after much better t3/reverse t3 ratio, added synthroid. I'm taking 25mcg cytomel (half in AM, half in afternoon), and 25 mcg Synthroid. I don't have my recent labs, however my TSH was around 2, T3 in the top of the range and T4 in the very bottom of the range. Reverse T3 ratio was perfect.
Avatar f tn Ok, well, I just caleld and asked for low dose cytomel. We'll see what he says, the office will call me back. I'm hoping he will be reasonable with a 30 day trial since I do have an appt early next month for follow up. I hope this does the trick. Besides really wanting to feel better, I would love to go in and tell him "I told you so"!! If I skip the 125mg Synthroid one day a week, it get's me pretty close to a dose of 100mg daily.
Avatar n tn First off, anyone taking cytomel should ALWAYS get tested for Free T3, since cytomel is a T3 only med. Total T3 is, for all practical purposes, useless, because it shows the amount of ALL the T3 in your blood, including that bound by proteins and unavailable for use. The FREE T3 shows only the unbound amount that's available for immediate use by the individual cells. That's what you need to know. T4 must be converted to T3 prior to being used.
Avatar f tn I take 137 mcg of Synthroid and my doc added 5mcg of Cytomel because my t3 was very low. I took all 5 mcg in the morning with my Synthroid and within 5 days I was a mess. Heart pounding like crazy and shaky. Called the doc and he told me to take 1/2 of the Cytomel to see if it made a difference. I decided to take 1/4. Did that for a week and felt fine. Started 1/2 and two days later I'm a mess again. Not sure what I'm gonna do now. Hopefully you will have better luck than I have.
Avatar f tn Initally - going on a T3 med - Cytomel in addition to the Synthroid - you will feel great - then crash. This applies to natural thyroid combo meds too. T3 hormone is direct - which means your body accepts it immediately. You expressed you felt aweful prior to starting Cytomel - so that says you were hypothyroid and wanted direct T3. Well, you gave the body - what it needed - but it wants more. This is proven on your FT3 lab - the only thing is this is an old lab so one can only assume.
Avatar f tn re on it and probably not even for the first or so. I was on T3 med for quite some time, before I could even tell I was on it. I'd say your tiredness after taking the cytomel yesterday had as much to do with lack of sleep the night before and your low vitamin B-12 levels as with your thyroid hormone level. You also took the second cytomel pretty late in the day, so maybe if you had taken it a bit earlier, before the first one wore completely off, you might not have gotten as tired.
Avatar f tn and you will see what is going on. Armour has t3 in it,however your doctor felt your t3 was low so he added more t3 in the form of cytomel. confusing isnt it? each "grain" of armour has 38 mcg t4 and 7 mcg of t3 in it.
Avatar f tn t have hyper symptoms? Would there be another reason for the high T3? Is it good judgement to prescribe cytomel with armour thyroid? I am not taking cytomel, but it was recommended by another physician in the past. Would taking iron supplements help absorption of T3. Thank you.
