Cytomel for hypothyroidism

Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel for hypothyroidism

cytomel

Avatar n tn My psychiatrist suggested that Cytomel may help some with depression and also with the tiredness and sleepiness I have had for years.I went to internet and read about hypothyroidism and how it often is undiagnosed due to normal blood test. Well I was uneasy about the Cytomel at first but when i saw how many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism I have I wondered if that isn't my problem. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia also and wondered if that has anything to do with the thyroid.
Avatar f tn After RAI, I was put on 125mcg L-thyroxine and up to 75mcg cytomel a day. As I tapered off the cytomel, my hypothyroidism symptoms began to return. Blood work was done (TSH 0.03) and my doctor's PA reduced by L-thyroxine to 116mcg per day and by then I was totally off cytomel anyway. Now, two months later, I have had more blood work done. Here are the results: TSH 0.12, T3 130 (ref 82-179), and fT4 1.95 (ref 0.2-1.9).
Avatar n tn I was not giving a cause for hypothyroidism and I assumed I was just slightly hypothyroid and didn’t think about it again because everything was going well with the medication. I have had iron checked my doctor and all did it at home. Here are the results at 11/23/19: Iron = 130 ug Transferrin Saturation = 43% TIBC = 301 ug Ferritin = 84 ng Is there a chance this mess started with Naturethroid going south (for me at least)?
Avatar f tn I have been on cytomel ever since I had my TT for cancer in September '07, just a month b4 you. Right after the TT, I was on cytomel only, then post RAI, both cytomel and levothyroxine. You don't say why you "tapered off" the cytomel, which is interesting. I actually asked my endo to get off of the cytomel and just up the levothyroxine. He had wanted me to take half a 25mcg table in the morning and half in the early afternoon.
Avatar f tn Hello. I recently had a thyroidectomy and I just had to stop taking my cytomel about two weeks ago for an upcoming radioactive iodine treament on Monday. Im getting really hypothyroid, Its getting hard to stand, im sore and most of all im sooo tired but I cant sleep. Im tired, but my anxiety is shooting through the roof. Will this go away after I start my hormone again? please help!
Avatar f tn My family doctor reluctantly agreed to let me start the Cytomel again. My psychiatrist started me on 25 mcg of Cytomel. I felt better for one day, and then everything went down hill. I started having night sweats, shaking, constantly sweating during the day, chills, some wheezing at night when laying down, and a productive cough. My temperature never went higher than 99.0 F.
Avatar n tn So your most recent labs before the dose change was Free T4 at 1.57, which is 79% of its range, while Free T3 of 3.0 was at 43% of its range. This is kind of typical for a hypothyroid patient taking T4 med. The Free T3 lags Free T4 because of inadequate conversion of T4 to T3. The correct definition for hypothyroidism is "insufficient T3 effect in tissue throughout the body, due to inadequate supply of, or response to, thyroid hormone".
Avatar n tn Hi ....Is there anyone on cytomel for hypothyroidism? How long does it take to work? I have put on about 10 pounds slowly even though I have been exercising atleast 3 times a week for 5 out of last 6 months. Then finally about a month ago I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. At least now I know the reason for weight gain. I just started on 25 mcg of cytomel. I can't wait for it to start working. Just this week I started burning at least 500 calories a day by exercising ....
Avatar f tn Please post the reference ranges for the above lab values. Ranges vary from lab to lab and have to come from your own report for the best comparison. Are those labs from before you began the cytomel or since you've been taking it? I have no idea why your doctor would say you "don't need" T4, since that's the first medication prescribed when one has hypothyroidism. It's very rare to be prescribed cytomel by itself and then only under very special conditions.
Avatar f tn s almost unheard of for hypothyroidism, except in a very few circumstances... Protocol calls for, at least a combination of a T4 medication, such as some form of levthyroxine (there are different brands, depending on your location). In addition, 37.5 mcg of cytomel is a very large dose and very few people ever need that much... if you were taking a T4 medication with it, presumably, you'd be converting some of the T4 to T3, as well. Also, are you taking the whole 37.
Avatar n tn dx central hypo + hashimoto new endo prescribed synthroid 125mgr + titre(cytomel) 10mgr. Read up on meds , condition etc but have absolutely no improvement infact feel awful with cytomel combo and will probably have to stop. Wrote to endo who told me to stop cytomel now believes that blood levels will 'have to do' because she can't understand why?
Avatar m tn I had one endo tell me I should stop them, that my numbers never qualified me for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism… symptoms of extreme tiredness, toxic feelings, muscle aches, nausea, indigestion, constipation/ diarrhea, etc etc Looks like it is possible I have gallstones as well - waiting for the test results there. So its possible malbsorption of key nutrients & lack of iodine caused a decrease in my fT3?
168348 tn?1379357075 I am 48 years old. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 18 months old so I have been dealing with Thyroid issues as long as I can remember. I currently take a combo of Levoxyl and Cytomel. Until recently, my levels had been pretty stable, but since I went into menopause last year, I've been experiencing low TSH. This is not unexpected since my doctor had warned me that my bodies need for thyroid hormone would decline after menopause.
Avatar n tn Cytomel is not the usual response to hypothyroidism. T4-only meds like Synthroid, Levoxly or genereic levothyroxine are much more ordinary. Your TSH is very low, indicating hyperthyroidism, or overmedication. However, your FT4 is very low, indicating hypothyroidism. It's hard to say what's going on not knowing whart your labs were before starting Cytomel. I'd really like to see FT3. 25 mcg of Cytomel taken just once a day is a bit odd.
Avatar f tn I have neglected the treatment of my hypothyroidism for well over 7 months now. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2001, but have never found a solid regimen to solve the symptoms (dry skin/hair loss, lack of focus, fatigue, depression). As logic would have it, if you don't treat it...it gets worse. It is not something I am proud of and need to address immediately.
Avatar n tn If she is on Cytomel - that would indicate hypothyroidism. Are you sure hyper is what she has? It is a very important thing to make sure information stays correct. Regardless of the condition whether thyroid related or not you are discussing mood stabilizers that work extensively with brain receptors so any of them can effect hormone levels and effects the system.
1355431 tn?1369975306 Some people find that T3 from cytomel or dessicated helps with muscle ache and pain, did for me, but still not 100%, waiting for that day! Was sore for ten years on a T4 med.
Avatar n tn If there are NO symptoms of hypothyroidism, but TSH levels are high (T3/T4 normal), is it O.K. not to take Levothyroxine (or other thyroid treatment)? Husband is happy, peaceful, energetic, healthy, in shape, etc. Only "symptoms" of hypothyroidism are high cholesterol and peripheral neuropathy. Both are usually from something else and neither goes away when he takes Levothyroxine.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced adrenal fatigue or insufficiency problems. I have been having a problem and was on Armour Thyroid for 40 years with no problems. In Dec 2007, I developed heart palpitations and finally in mid-March 2008 my doctor changed me to Synthroid. Well, it has not been a good experience and I have been minimally functional since then - fatigue, exhaustion - inability to do much at all.
Avatar f tn After 4 years on Armor thyroid, my MD switched me to synthroid 25 mcg and cytomel 5 mcg 1 bid (tid prn). I am a 50 y.o females who is s/p total hysterectomy for ovarian ca. I take Estratest FS 4 X's week. I am feeling MUCH better with the Synthroid and Cytomel, however, my latest labs have come back as follows: TSH- .062 Free Thyroxin-- 1.
988694 tn?1332359479 Hi and thanks for your response. answer #1 : Yes, I was initially taking 3 grains of NT. At that time my Ft3 and reverse T3 ratio was 8. He decreased to 1.5 grains and added 37 mcg Cytomel, all this in the course of three months. My Ft4 was 0.9 which is at the bottom of the range and where has always been when I am not taking replacement. After three months of adding Cytomel slowly, my ratio was 15. answer # 2: 37 mcg of Cytomel.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for a 2 years it was caused by trauma I take Levothyroxin 75mg. I have a few questions first I experience both hyro and hyper symptoms. First I lose a lot of wet then I gain a lot of weight and I am recently experiencing high heart rates especially during bedtime I get scared to sleep because I don't think I would wake up. I am scheduled to see a endocrinologist this week I also have a goetor on the right side of my neck.
1004097 tn?1251117610 30 am), then I take the cytomel about 7:00 am to help me get through the day. I take my blood pressure med at the same time I take my cytomel, but benazepril is not a beta blocker, it's an ACE inhibitor. T4 and T3 meds are NOT the same thing. T3 is the "body ready" hormone, meaning that's the form that your body actually uses.
Avatar n tn m in the normal range. Doctor just put me on Cytomel for insomnia and fatigue. For several days I felt awesome for the first time in years but am but I am starting to feel even more awful then I first did. Could the Cytomel dosage be too high? Has anyone ever experienced this. I'm almost tempted to start cutting my pills in half to try to see if a lower dose helps like it started to.
