Common Questions and Answers about Cytomel dosage mcg

cytomel

Avatar f tn After having two thyroidectomies and radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer (1997), I have been on 75 mcg of cytomel for 13 years. My new doctor wants to lower my dosage significantly because she says my tsh level is too low. I have already changed to 50 mcg daily. I am afraid to go any lower. What should I do?
Avatar f tn Patience is not my long suit. But as soon as Endo saw this, he increase my generic Cytomel to your dosage 5 mcg twice a day. He did not touch the T4 despite the low level. Hopefully this will work for me as well. Thanks for your thoughts. Always appreciated. My question was just about the unusual jump from 5 to 25 by the manufacturer. I realize just add another but was curious about those who need more than 10. I guess 25 would be good if someone needs 50mcg a day.
2033435 tn?1329943508 1 grain of Cytomel 5 mcg in the morning, 1 grain of Cytomel 5 mcg after lunch. Misunderstood dr., took meds wrongly, less than recommended by Doctor, by mistake. - August 2nd: 2 grains Cytomel 5 mcg in the morning, 2 grains Cytomel 5 mcg in the afternoon. (we realized I was taking less meds than recommended and upped to what it was supposed to be in June 7) Do you guys think that just by upping Cytomel I will feel better and have good FT3 and FT4?
Avatar n tn 90 mg of Armour is 37.5 mcg of Cytomel plus 150 mcg of levo. http://thyroid.about.com/library/drugs/blconversionchart.
2194306 tn?1338592996 I would have thought your doctor might have given you 100 mcg of Synthroid plus 7.5 mcg of Cytomel = 30 mcg, which would have put you at 130 mcg total hormones, more near to the amount of medication you had "settled into"....and then tested after 6 weeks to see if your TSH and FREE T4 had slightly reduced while bringing your FREE T3 level up.
Avatar m tn Should I change to natural thyroid 60 mg, or add 25 mcg/5 mcg of cytomel, or up the dosage from 88 synthyroid to 100 mcg of synthyroid? Thyroid Stimulating Hormone [TSH] 0.15 0.32-4.00 Free T4 15 9-19 Free T3 3.0 3.1-6.2 On sythroid 88 mcg In August Thyroid Stimulating Hormone [TSH] 0.28 0.32-4.00 mIU/L Thyroxine Free [Free T4] 16 9-19 pmol/L Triiodothyronine Free [Free T3] 3.2 3.1-6.2 pmol/L In June Thyroid Stimulating Hormone [TSH] 0.24 0.32-4.
Avatar f tn One grain (60mg) of Armour contains 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. So your current dosage totals approx. 76 mcg of T4 and 18 mcg of T3. If the doctor is trying to increase your FT3 level by switching you to Synthroid and Cytomel, why is your new dosage lower in T3, but with a big increase in T4. If you are already not adequately converting T4 to T3, resulting in FT3 lower than wanted, then I don't see how this helps at all.
Avatar f tn Why did the doctor decide to prescribe Cytomel only and why start with such a large amount? The daily dosage of 50 mcg of Cytomel is the equivalent of 200 mcg of a T4 med. In addition, Cytomel (T3) is such a fast acting med that I can easily envision unwanted reactions. Many of our members report on adverse reaction to such a large dosage. I suggest that you discuss with the doctor and reconsider the starting dosage.
Avatar n tn You might consider going up to 5mcg's of Cytomel. Usually the dosage of Cytomel is 5-10% of the T4 dosage and at 2.5 you are taking less than that. Plus, your free t3 has room to move up. Most feel best with a free t3 over 350.
Avatar n tn etc even though my FT3 was still not even mid range yet and I was having hypo symptoms. I had to drop from 10 mcg cytomel down to 5 mcg and raise levo to 75. I just saw my endo last week and both my FT4 and FT3 have finally reached mid range, but I wanted to bump them up just a bit more, without tipping the scale; we left the cytomel at 5, and raised the levo to 75 & 88 on alternating days, which comes out to 81.5 mcg/day.
Avatar n tn Both your FT4 and FT3 are too low, as is your Vitamin B-12. Did you have any other iron related tests done, such as Ferritin, and the rest of the iron panel? It looks as though your iron level could stand to be a bit higher. Ferritin is the iron storage hormone and that's low, it means you have no iron in storage, either. Have you considered increasing your T4 dosage?
Avatar f tn I'm presently on 60 mcg Cytomel and 125 mcg Levothyroxine. What dosages are you on?
Avatar m tn No, I was doing 5 mcg Cytomel and 50 mcg Synthroid first thing in the morning and then another 5 mcg in the afternoon after 2 or 3 p.m.
1070570 tn?1283436213 I was up to 125 mcg synthroid, then dropped back to 75 synthroid, then switched to 75 generic levo and added 10 mcg cytomel. That was too much cytomel, so dropped back to 5 mcg cytomel and switched to generic; then up to 88 mcg levo, staying with 5 mcg generic cytomel. Am currently on 100 mcg Tirosint and 5 mcg generic cytomel. I take the Tirosint first thing in the morning, per instructions (my day starts 3:30 am). I take my T3 med about 7-7:30 am.
744962 tn?1270942038 I was on 50 mcg levothyroxin and10 mcg cytomel and I took the cytomel in 2 doses - the first with my levothyroxin first thing in the morning, the second about 10:00. I should tell you that MY "first thing in the morning" is at 3:00 am......... So the second dose of cytomel was approx 7 hrs after the first and that seemed to get me through the day okay.
8382486 tn?1397856353 Free T4 1.35 / Free T3 2.8 / TSH 0.03. I have read pages and pages and blogs and boards and everything else I can get my hands on about thryoid meds and am so confused. I feel marginally better taking the Cytomel but dont know when to take it, with or without food, with or without my Synthroid. Im back to work now and looking for a routine that I can keep to as far as taking the meds, some energy back in my life and the right questions to ask the MD or requests to make about medication changes.
Avatar f tn 00 I take 12.5 mcg cytomel. I have been hypo for 15 years. Now that I am in perimenopause it seems to be out of control. I feel a little more energized now but my hair texture feels finer and maybe thinner.
Avatar m tn If you've been on the same dosage for quite some time and you still have symptoms, that's probably a pretty good sign that you should try something new. If I'm reading your original post, here, right, you've been on the same dosage for 4 months and all it seems to be doing is driving up your FT4, without having much effect on FT3. " Regarding the Cytomel treatment, you mention "as needed".
Avatar f tn 200 mcg is a relatively high dosage, but the dosages other people take really don't have anything to do with your dosage... it's all a matter of what your body needs. What medication/dosage were you on prior to switching to Tirosint? Did you have labs done just before you switched? If so, could you please post them so we can see where you were at that time? Be sure to include reference ranges, since ranges vary lab to lab and have to come from your own report.
1070570 tn?1283436213 So, if you subtract 25 mcg of Cytomel from your regimen, you ought to be adding more like 100 mcg of Synthroid. It sounds like your doctor might have left you undermedicated in the switch to Synthroid. I have no personal experience with Cytomel-only therapy, but I do know of people who have been treated with T3-only temporarily. Dosage is very individual, and what others are taking will not apply to you. Food does not affect Cytomel like it does Synthroid.
Avatar n tn I am on 3 grains of armour, which amounts to 27 mcg of T3 (9 mcg per grain). Before switching I was taking 15 mcg on T3 (cytomel). So theoretically, despite the fact that my body has to convert the T4 to T3, then shouldn't I be getting that same type of readily available T3 in the naturethroid aside from the T4 it has in it? Does the T4 block the T3 from working somehow? Or is it the time release? It seems like I should be bouncing off the walls with all of the T3 in the naturethroid.
Avatar f tn Let me explain. I don't understand what is going on in my body. When I went to the doc they tested me and found out I had hashimotos Ok the doc told me then that my levels were fine and I didn't need meds. Ok so I became more and more ill. I was told I had depression and put on anti depressants which was horrible. I don't ever want to go through those ever again. Still I'm confused because no one is explaining anything to me. I was on 50 mcg of levothyroxine for six months.
Avatar f tn what were your lab results before you started with the cytomel? How low was your free t3? A typical start dosage is only 5 mcg and work up from there only if needed. You cannot pay attention to the tsh when on a t3 med...it will supress it and make you look hyper. When on combination meds, you can only treat by the free t4 and free t3. I have never heard of using cytomel to add to the effectiveness of antidepressants. I do know that sometimes depression can be caused by low t3 levels.
Avatar f tn re taking 20 mcg (two 10 mcg) in the morning and only 5 mcg at night? Why do take Cytomel at night? Because T3 is fast acting, it's typically split between a morning and noon/early afternoon dose, but avoided at night so it doesn't disturb sleep. Please clarify your med schedule and dosage, if you don't mind. Why were you dropped all the way from 75 mcg Synthroid to 25 mcg?
