Cymbalta and mania

Common Questions and Answers about Cymbalta and mania

cymbalta

Avatar f tn Mostly happy and energetic enough to ride a bicycle and exercise regularly. But now the depression is longer and worse. I tried Cymbalta and too many side effects. I went off and felt better then certain triggers like toxic people bring me down. A change in routine sends me Manic. A few days ago I had to take 4 benadryl to come down off of it and stop it. So toxic people are absolutely not allowed in my life. I am seeing my Phychiatrist tomorrow to talk about what we can do.
1487057 tn?1288157745 I have heard that the anti depressant Cymbalta works well to combat both and im considering taking that even tho its only an anti depressant and not a mood stabiliser.. Will it bring on mania???
804276 tn?1480858056 i want to start taking cymbalta for bipolar depression and chronic pain and wondered if anyone takes this, what the side effects are and how it helped with pain and depression. i take prozac and lortab and would like to get off the lortab and can't take prozac all the time because it makes me severely anxious if i'm not in a major depression. any advice or experience stories would be helpful.
525545 tn?1293181194 i have taken both of these meds. cymbalta was more stimulating and helped with my back pain. if i remember right, the starting dose is 20mgs. they prescribe this drug to alot of people with fibromyalsia(sp)? take care.
Avatar n tn My best suggestion is to discuss this all over with your psychiatrist as perhaps you might have bipolar instead of depression and mood stabilizers such as Lithium, Depakoate and Lamictal are used for that and anti-depressents sometimes worsen mania. Speak to your psychiatrist about the moodswings and let them come to a conclusion as perhaps it could be rapid cycling (going from manic to depressed in a short period of time). Bipolar like depression is of course very treatable.
Avatar f tn Sometimes it takes a few tries with different meds to find a balance. I had a full blown hypomanic episode on Cymbalta (SNRI), and SSRI's never did much good in the long run - citalopram is a SSRI - but they sometimes use low doses in conjunction with mood stabilizers. My pdoc is considering adding Wellbutrin as it doesn't usually cause hypomania. I am waiting until I am on the right doses of the drugs I am on now. I just got diagnosed end of July.
574118 tn?1305135284 As I stated it worked fine for me on both mania and depression. I was stable at 325 mg. for close to ten years. It did at the end worsen mania but that's an extremely high dose. But in the meantime it was working well the whole time on both manic and depression. As for mood stabilizers it is typical to change after a decade for some people at least. It does happen every now and then.
692643 tn?1372611227 BIPOLAR I has 1 or more manic episodes or mixed episodes--symptoms of both mania and depression occurring nearly everyday for at least 1 week and 1 or more major depressive episodes. Bipolar I disorder is the most severe form of the illness, marked by extreme manic episodes. BIPOLAR II has 1 or more depressive episodes with at least 1 hypomanic episode.
1018335 tn?1270080530 I would like to get off suboxone sometime this year. could i take something like cymbalta and just quit the suboxone - basicly having the anti depressant take it's place in some way? are there any combinations that work with suboxone? I am seeing my phsciatrist tomarrow and would like to have some ideas as far as my medications. this is so confusing, yet liberating that soon i will be functional for the first time in my life. Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn I am sorry to say you can still have them. I am on lamictal and cymbalta and I still have episodes. They are not magic pills. If you are having episodes and are worried about them then maybe you should see a therapist for the day to day coping and dealing with these issues.
1237757 tn?1323143119 ll eat my hat) is seeing a psychiatrist and has been taking Cymbalta for a week. He says that he has not been enjoying the tablets at all and feel's like he has energy to burn just sitting on a couch. I'm worried he might also be in the first stages of being launched into mania. Does anyone know how close these two are related and if similar side effects could be expected. I noticed Cymbalta is also a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which worries me.
Avatar m tn I had been taking 60mg of cymbalta up until July. I was still dealing with alot of panic attacks so my primary doc referred me to a psychiatrist. She increased me to 100mg of zoloft which was awful. It caused me to have racing thoughts. My psychiatrist said it sounded like it induced mania. She immediately took me off the zoloft and started me on 150mg of wellbutrin. I have been on the Wellbutrin for almost a month. I cannot really tell a huge difference.
1052541 tn?1255363834 I was taking Cymbalta too, it made me very sick and induced mania and mixed states. I still take it, but with a mood stabilizer added. If you have BP then you need a mood stabilizer too. Are you under the care of a Psychiatrist? You really should go for help even though you don't like to ask for it. Research has proved that the course of the illness only progresses without proper treatment. Don't be afraid to ask for help, we've all been there!
692643 tn?1372611227 My error, I do see you were diagnosed. Normally when BP you are going to have at least, and I mean at least 2 drugs on board for your treatment. The combination you are is a long standing combination of meds but not first choice. Did you get diagnosed by your GP or your psych? Cymbalta is generally not a good choice for BP, as it can cause hypo/mania and serious anxiety.
479581 tn?1317757488 s actually an SNRI (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) along the lines with Cymbalta, but hopefully it will be more affordable. It did have a good success rate in the studies and maybe it will be something else that can provide relief from pain. Thanks for the information dai3symae.
Avatar f tn I 'cold-turkeyed' cymbalta several years ago, and I suffered fatigue, severe mood swings, crying jags and rebound depression. Once I started an SSRI antidepressant these largely went away. Someone else I know had a terrible time with the brain-zaps and other weird sensations even when tapering so it varies widely. I think doctors can use another antidepressant like prozac to replace the cymbalta and then taper that one down to help with the side effects of withdrawal.
Avatar f tn m on a recently increased dose of 2500 mg Depakote, 60 mg Cymbalta, 100 mg Lamictal, and 100 mg Geodon. Nothing really seems to help. I've felt sort of emotionless, unable to enjoy things like I used to. Just haven't felt like myself. I manage to get through the day, but waking and getting started is very difficult for me. Any suggestions? I see a psychiatrist every month, and get my hopes up every time, but I'm wondering if increasing the medicine is really the answer.
728965 tn?1266373645 The thing about Cymbalta is I have Bipolar, and I cannot take an antidepressent as it triggers mania in those with BP. My doctor and I are considering Lyrica as the next step, and I have to say I'm not far off from telling her I can't take it... There are just even more risks that she's concerned about, and she understands my insurance situation...I'm on my moms and it has a pre-existing condition policy... ERR!!! I was just wondering what people thought about a PM doc...
1610967 tn?1314811101 I am now on 1,200 mg of Lithium and 30 mg of cymbalta. I just need any tips with how you deal with your Bipolar. I am scared that I will go into either a depression or a manic episode again.
Avatar f tn i used to be on prozac 60mg (up to 100mg) for about 8-10 years and switched to cymbalta which helps with depression, anxiety, and pain. you may try that. don't over take your xanax because you're right, it is addictive. don't take anymore than you're prescribed before talking to your psychiatrist, which i suggest you call today or tomorrow to make an appointment.
520191 tn?1355635402 s a good idea as can cause Mixed, mania, and psychosis in someone with those issues. So for the moment i said no. but can feel myself sinking into depression again. What do you think? What are you on if any?
750716 tn?1263734643 I ran out of my anti-depressant 6 days ago, and decided I wouldn't renew the request for more as I've done almost a week without them. The withdrawal symptoms are absolutely dreadful, there are pages and pages on google about the very subject. I'm not convinced the anti depressant was helping anyway as I'm often having mixed episodes even with a mood stabiliser added in, which is Tegretol.
692643 tn?1372611227 Could they be inducing mania? Could you try a SSRI instead? Something like Prozac? I take a very low dose of Prozac (10mg) and couple it with a couple other different meds for my Fibro. I take Topamax and Soma as well for pain and migraines. It seems to be a good combo. You may be able to handle the Prozac since it only affects the serotonin, or something similar to it (a SSRI) if you have trouble with the SNRIs like Cymbalta, Savella or Effexor.
1267205 tn?1321117128 They put me on Zoloft for anxiety but that could send you into mania since you experience mania and I don't. There's also benzodiazepines but they are usually used as a last resort. Antipsychotics can be used for anxiety but I wouldn't recommend that because of running the risk for tardive dyskinesia. I would much rather have my severe anxiety than TD.
Avatar f tn I briefly talked to my therapist about the benzo mania and she said it could be just the drugs causing it, I guess I will have to wait and see what happens once Ive been clean awhile. w/d has not had any effect thus far. I will admit, Ive been kicking this around in my head for years, but fear has kept me from doing anything about it. If it can be managed without meds, I would be a lot more inclined to go to a Dr.
