Common Questions and Answers about Cutting metoprolol in half

toprol

Avatar f tn Metoprolol 25 mg. Does it make a difference in what I'm taking, wether I can cut in half or not? The PA knows what I am taking and he told me just to cut it.
Avatar f tn I was weaned off of a much more potent beta blocker (Coreg) by cutting it in half, then again in half. I had no problem. I used a pill cutter which did a good job of splitting the drug, but the cuts weren't perfect. I think as long as you keep some of the drug in your system, you will be just fine.
Avatar n tn you won't be on a time release with standard metoprolol that is why you need to take it twice a day. I don't know why you have to cut in in half, Wal-Mart has generic metoprolol in 25mg tablets for $4.
Avatar f tn Hi im not sure how long ago i decided to start cutting my klonopin in half (maybe almost a month ago) and i was tapering off xanax also anyways i starteed cutting my 0.5 mg klonopin in half and taking 1/2 every 4 hours and i ahvent felt teh best so last night i decided maybe i should go back on how it says on my bottle tot ake them 1 pill 3 times a day..so i took a whole one last night and anotehr hole one this morning and i felt so drugged out and dizzy amd jsust ill.
Avatar f tn I realize this may sound strange but I was wondering if any of you have a "pill cutter" at home or do you just cut your pill in half with a knife? I am cutting down on the dose of my beta blocker per my Doctor and I was wondering if I have to purchase a pill cutter or can I just cut it with a knife or razor? I am a little anxious because you aren't supposed to "crush or chew" these pills and I'm afraid that if I cut it.......perhaps it will be crumbly.
907968 tn?1292622204 t know what the price differences are for smaller dose pills but assuming the worse that they are higher in price, and that the Dr wants me to take 1/2 the dose, would cutting the pills in half have the same effect as getting 20mg pills?
Avatar n tn I would strongly urge you to contact your doctor and get some advice, given the new symptoms. I would think that cutting a pill in half and taking it wouldn't hurt you a bit in the meantime.
Avatar n tn You mention you are cutting your beta blocker dose in half. You might not like to hear this, but by doing so, you might be reducing your heart's ability to remodel itself, e.g., revive stunned cells. Is your Cardiologist on the same page with you regarding your medications?
Avatar f tn I've been on Metoprolol ER for about three years now and was wondering what it is like to get off of it? Knowing that my heart rate, blood pressure, pvc's and pac's are being controlled by the meds, I didn't know how hard it would be to get off of it. Also, has anyone gained weight as a result of taking Metropolol?
Avatar f tn He even shared with me that he took Cialis and it helped him a lot. SHould I just try one? I thought about cutting a 5mg pill in half but it says on the bottle do not do that. I really want to have sex again. Will the cialis make the heart race? I don't take nitrates or anything, just Metoprolol to keep my pulse under control day to day. I',m slim and not overweight. Can anyone ease my mind and help me get up the courage to take one? I came close to taking one today but chickened out.
Avatar f tn I was just wondering if I'm getting the right amound of thyroid meds, I'm on Armour and for the past 6 weeks or so I've been cutting my pills in half, taking half in the morning and half around 3 but sometimes I'm late taking them, will this mess with my levels? Also They just fall apart so I chew them, are they absorbing that way? and I'm just wondering when I get my labs done the 31 will I be lacking due to this method of taking my meds?
Avatar m tn When I complained about dream problems he said drop the 100 mg at night, just 100 in the morning. I give this data as an example of doctor approved cutting the does in half. I have other examples... but I digress. I'd think if you get two pills in in a 24 hour period that is fine. The closer to 50/50 the better, but not required.
Avatar f tn I am planing to talk with my Cardiologist on my 6 mo check-up about cutting my BB and CC dose in half to see if it helps reduce the fatigue I feel (if it is just my age, then there BB and CCB have little to do with it). I take those durgs simply to control my HR, and I can monitor that myself and go back to the higher dose if the HR starts to climb too much. That's what I plan to suggest. Some people have a low tolerance to the side effects.
689267 tn?1235241749 are you talking about the 5 mg percocet...i used to break mine in half but i don t know about 4ths...i think it would be safe....
9043033 tn?1401346653 Although I'm on Norvasc, Metoprolol, Clonodine my B/P is never in the normal range. Lately it's been running around 240/120 most all the time, especially in the evenings and nighttime. I had a stroke in 2006 and have been on Lasix 80mg. 3 times a day, Demedex 20mg. 2 times a day. My dr. doesn't give me a reason for having to be on such high doses of diuretics or reasons for my B/P being so high although I'm on all those B/P meds.
443862 tn?1237999439 Sorry Flycaster305 but I couldn't disagree more. I'm on Toprol and have had simililar issues including SOB and near syncope and the panic comes after the symptoms not before. The "panic attack" is the most over-relied on explanation in medicine. Far too often we just accept this **** from out health professionals unquestioning and "live with" the side effects. My average blood pressure was 140/90 and on 25mg/day it often in 88/58 and that is TOO low.
Avatar f tn You are on the lowest dose of metoprolol like I am. Just ask your doc to bump you up a little. That should do the trick. I find mine seems less effective certain times of the month during hormonal fluctuations, or after too little sleep or other such triggers, but once I'm back on track so is the metoprolol.
Avatar f tn The Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate) tablet should not be cut in half. Doing so defeats it's time release properties. If you want to mess with dosages (and I don't think you should), the generic Metoprolol Tartrate (referred to as just Metoprolol) can be cut in half without a problem. I take an odd, 75mg. Per day; 50mg at dinner, and 25mg (half a pill) upon rising. Think of your dose level as a "starting dose level".
Avatar n tn [Atenolol is a beta blocker, but its half-life is far longer than what is the case with metoprolol (6-9 hours vs 3-4 hours). ] Ouch, when I asked to move from the slow release BB to normal BB, Metoprolol, to save money I had no idea the half life is so short. If I understand half life that says in 8 hours my medication level is to 25% and at 12 hours (2 half lives) down to 12.5% almost the same as empty. I take every 12 hours, approximately.
Avatar n tn I cut his dosage in half and the next day he was fine. That night I again gave him the 12.5 mg dose. Today he is once again non functional, sleeping all day, and has blurred vision. I will not be giving him any more metropolol. His blood pressure this morning was 122/75.
Avatar f tn I have been taking metoprolol and diltiazem for sixteen months and initially the medications brought the SVTs under control. Fourteen months ago I started coughing blood and experiencing chest congestion. This took my attention off any heart issues and sent me on a long search for the cause of the bleeding. After many tests and visits with various specialists I never did get the answer. The bleeding resolved itself after 10 months (last October) and has not reappeared.
Avatar f tn I recently had an exacerbation of svt requiring adenosine and an increase in my maintenance metoprolol dosage. I essentially lost a day of memory and have been forgetful and foggy headed. Just wondering if this is normal. I can't get any doctor I have seen to address this.
1423357 tn?1511085442 What I just did was to skip a complete day to give my body time to metabolize what I think was an excessive amount of the drug that had built up over the years I've been taking it. In the case of Metoprolol, the average half life is around 5 hours. So every 5 hours, the amount of the drug in your system halves its strength. So half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, thirty-second of the dose remains of the original amount in approximately 24 hours time.
Avatar m tn Yes, 25mg cut in half is a very small dose, perhaps too small to make a significant effect. But another question, why are you cutting Metoprolol Succinate in half? The whole idea of Toprol XL is to allow extended release.
Avatar f tn There is no Metoprolol withdrawal symptoms. There can be a rebound effect, but it depends a lot on what you were taking it for on whether the rebound wouldbe important in your case. As was said, 12.5mg is teeny tiny. At the end of the day, there is a minute amount remaining in your body. I stopped my 100mg dose 2 weeks before my electrophysiology procedure. My physician instructed me to just stop. I was fine. There was some "jumpiness", but it was completely tolerable.
Avatar f tn Hi so I have periodic bouts of fast pulse, have had all the heart tests, all were normal. Also am thin and in decent shape. My cardiologist recently put me on 25mg Metoprolol twice a day, so 50mg a day. It's helped a lot overall. It's especially helped get rid of those skipped beats and noticeable palpitations I used to get. It's also definitely slowed my heart rate down. I've been taking it twice a day, once in morning and evening. I'm supposed to take it with food.
