907968 tn?1292622204 I did the same thing back in February, getting nervous about my cholesterol blood tests. Things came out great back then with the exception that my overall cholesterol number was low, 106 mg/dl from 130 mg/dl three months earlier. Monday (5-17-10) I see my PCP to go over these numbers as well as to discuss another newly diagnosed ear problem for the first time (superior canal dehiscence). Currently I take a 40mg Simvastatin every night.
Avatar f tn I've had some suggestions to cut the pills in half, but I have capsules, not tablets and they cannot be cut in half. What should I do??
Avatar n tn was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
Tbd If a side effect impacts life too much, then it may be the case that it is better to give up the benefit it provides if taken. In this case, keeping your cholesterol in check is the important factor. If you aren't going to take the medication, please speak to your doctor. There are natural ways to work on lowering and maintaining proper cholesterol numbers. Here is a list of natural ways https://www.webmd.

1059594 tn?1261323966 Isn't Opana Time Released? I know you're the doctor, but I don't think you should inform people to cut their medications in half, ESPECIALLY if they're time released as this could cause a rapid release of all the medication in turn making her more sick, or am I wrong? Avatar m tn Finally, the PF people at Pfizer told me that while the firm recommends that the Lipitor pills NOT be broken in half or cut in half, they do say that it is perfectly okay to do this under doctor's prescription or recommendation, and that there is no negative downside at all to cutting Lippy in half. However, they do recommend not breaking them if no need to. So there. Case solved. Happy camper I am.
Avatar f tn Yes, my pill can be split in half. I don't have a pill spliter, so I am wondering if I can use a knife to cut it. I already cut it actually and it split right in half. My pill has a "divit" like a divider already so it cut very easily.

Avatar f tn The main study for Simvastatin was the 4S trial which proved that the incidence rate for side effects at 40 mg of Simvastatin was 1 in 2,220 prescriptions. What is interesting is that the incidence rate in the placebo group was 1 in 2,223. Also muscle pain is a very common complaint and is a symptom of many conditions. Ed is correct about the half life, a normal 40 mg dose is out of your system within a day. Also, any side effects are usually gone in a couple days or a week at most.
645800 tn?1466860955 Vytorin is a combination Ezetimibe and simvastatin and I'm currently taking simvastatin. My doctor is switching my medicine due to my leg cramps to see if that will help. All of the cholesterol "statin" medicines can cause muscle cramps. This one works in the gut to keep your body from getting the cholesterol into your body in the first place.
Avatar m tn I understand there is some evidence that drug has had some problem side effects in high dose usage, 40 mg is high dose. In fact my cardiologist had me cut from 20 mg to 10 mg about two months ago. In my case there was a concern about interactions of Samvastatin with the calcium channel blocker I take. I am going in tomorrow to get my cholesterol checked and I suspect it will go up due to the lower dose.
Avatar m tn I have not been able to tolerate any of the statin drugs due to the severe gastric distress they cause. This, in turn, will result in palpitations for me. I have lowered my cholesterol with plant sterols, exercise and diet.
Avatar m tn On a side note, a study was done to measure the side effect rate in 19,000 people, half on a statin and half on a placebo. It was interesting to find that the rate of muscle and joint pain reported was identical by both groups. I personally have been on 40 mg of Simvastatin for years without any side effects, but everyone responds differently.
Avatar m tn Based on a few opinions including the advice I got here I got started on TEVA-ROSUVASTATIN 20MG TABLET. 1 per day was the prescribed amount. I was tempted to cut the tablets in half but instead went with the doctor's recommendation. Hopefully the side effects won't be too bad.

After 18 weeks, patients given simvastatin had significantly lower total cholesterol, lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and higher HDL cholesterol levels than those who took pravastatin.
