Common Questions and Answers about Cumulative effects of concussion in high school athletes

concussion

Avatar f tn If you have any doctors around who have treated either high school or college athletes, that might be a good resource to check out. Unfortunately, this may be something that just takes time to heal. But, what ever it is, you should talk with your college counselor and let them know what is going on. There are accommodations that they can make for you to help you. And, if the concussion happened on campus or during an event, it certainly needs to be reported.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar n tn Hi, I am an 18 year old male who is still suffering from the effects of multiple concussions in high school. I had one my junior year, which was not too serious, and the effects of it soon cleared up. However, the next year, I received a violent blow to the head (football again) in which my mouthpiece wasn't in correctly. I was wearing a revolution helmet, the supposedly concussion proof helmets, which cracked all the way down the side from where I got hit.
Avatar n tn Until the effects from the concussion are better you should not be doing any kind of exercise. I would follow up with your Dr on your concussion sinc eit has been a month.
Avatar m tn It is possible to have post-concussion syndrome for months and even years after the incident. This condition is a complex disorder in which a combination of post-concussion symptoms like headaches, tinnitus and dizziness are experienced. There are no specific treatment for post-concussion syndrome but treatment for the individual symptoms you experience is made by your doctor. Regular follow-up with your doctor is highly recommended. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn • I get the headaches when I am with friends, at work or in school. Whenever I have to engage in cognitive tasks and absorb a lot of information. It effects my memory and concentration. • It all started after I got a concussion almost two years ago around the same time the symptoms started. • On top of that I have been diagnosed with ADHD and was on the medication Concerta (Ritalin) for the last 2 years of high-school. • I am 21 male 155 lbs with no other medical conditions.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for the input at least it gives me another way to go no the doctors never mentioned the post concussion syndrome but I'll check into it however its not just high school football to him its his college choice on the line unfortunatly but his health is more important to me we will see what I can figure out thanks again.
Avatar f tn I suffered a concussion 4 months ago when I fell during a parade with my high school band. My mom took me to the ER and I was diagnosed with a concussion. I had a CT scan and nothing was out of the ordinary, and it seemed to just be a mild concussion. 4 months later, I'm still having issues. I'm a junior in high school and concentration and memory issues made me switch out of all of my honors classes into regular ones and drop both math and science completely.
Avatar f tn However in the tests at the University of Buffalo, supervised patients would exercise to 80% of maximum heart rate, which was the point where symptoms such as dizziness and headache increased. High performance athletes would be increased to 90% of heart rate maximum, yet post exercise the overall recovery of each group showed quickened compared to non exercise patients. What I found interesting is the researchers chose the 80% of maximum heart rate completely arbitrarily.
20790871 tn?1507161421 It is difficult for me to pinpoint what could be causing this because a lot of things in my life changed when this issue started occurring. My diet changed, I lost a bit of weight(down to 6.4% body fat), my training intensified, and I started two medications for depression (Lexapro and Wellbutrin). I gained the weight back after I quit competitive running, but the hair thinning persists.
Avatar n tn How are you feeling now? Have you seen a doctor about this? It almost sounds like you may have gotten a concussion besides injuring your shoulder. Because of the headaches, difficultly with memory, trouble concentrating, nausea, feeling "fuzzy," sleep changes, visual changes, I suggest you get checked out by a doctor, preferably a neurologist if you can...otherwise your PCP.
Avatar m tn bullied from grade school til high school. Anybody ever get bullied because of being in special ed classes?
Avatar n tn m older? Trust me when I was in high school I loved football with every ounce in my body, I loved to nail people as hard as I could, but now that I've quit playing I deeply regret ever playing, because now all I want to do is be able to grow old and enjoy my family. Hopefully God will bless me, I feel as if he already has in the sense that I decided not to play college football. I hope you make the right choice.
874521 tn?1424116797 You and I know of all the press that athletes get when there is trouble in their llives and than all the talk of steroid use is raked over the coals and of course AGGRESSION is one of the major side effects.... I know these meds are much lower in doses than what these athletes use, however in young children won't the side effects be magnified??? Doctors sure don't want to discuss this with you...and I can't find much in print but I will.
Avatar f tn But again, generally, that product, or any testosterone prescription, can be a problem for women if it raises levels too high. Keep in mind that many female athletes take testosterone to maximize performance and to get those six pack abs you see in high level female athletes, almost all of whom are taking some form of testosterone but know how to do it and when to do it to hide it from the authorities of sports. Men do this too, Bodybuilders almost all do it.
Avatar n tn Dear puggins: The first cycle of chemotherapy is often an indicator of how a person might feel for subsequent cycles although it is not a guarantee. Further, there are some side effects that can develop with cumulative doses. Doctors use facts about a specific tumor as well as statistics to determine the probability of a tumor spreading.

Avatar f tn These two drugs should be okay to take together. I have a drug book, as I am in school, and I read both of these drugs... There is no contraindication in taking these drugs together. You may want to make sure and drink extra water, as both have some constipation as a side effect, but other than that, you should be okay.
Avatar f tn After getting an elbow to the jaw by my nephew (while 20weks pregnant) I became very anxious about concussions. Either because of hormones or a concussion... my anxiety went into overdrive. To help convince myself it wasn't a big deal, I kept hitting my jaw (like 5 knocks) in that same place with my knuckles throughout the day. Ridiculous I know. I did this for a couple of weeks-multiple times a day. I got a migraine with Aura and stopped.

Avatar n tn Try to get to a doctor before going back to school. It could just be an aftermath of your concussion, but I would also recommend taking an advil when you get headaches until you can get checked out by your doc.
Avatar m tn m not sure why, but he said that he has missed months of school because of his brian, because his doc told him not to stimulate his brain. All i know is that he gets dizzy often and he hasn't been the same since. Do you have any idea what could be going on with him?
973741 tn?1342342773 Ice baths are used by tons of professional athletes, especially those who are involved in high intensity sports like football and basketball. It's unlikely they do anything for healing, and I'm with the skeptic above that they do anything for immunity, but they allow players to get back on the field quickly despite the tremendous amount of soreness that follows football collisions and basketball players hitting the floor repeatedly.
Avatar f tn A lot of athletes also take a year at a prep school or a community college or smaller college and then transfer in. The best thing is to speak to an admittance counselor at Hopkins and see what your chances are. If you can get in, it's a heck of a school, and you can't do better if lacrosse is your thing.
973741 tn?1342342773 Boy, what a pickle! In my day lunch was at noon. We ate as quickly as possible, then hit the school play area and played sports until class started again. In those days, the organizes sports activities were after school and I can't remember being hungry or having a hard time of it -- the young can do anything! I guess the question depends on how old your kids are and how intense their participation is -- whether they are serious athletes or just like to play.
Avatar m tn From my standpoint your high-school footbasll coah should be criminally prosecuted for not pulling you from the game after the first concussion. Consult your mom or dad about seeing at attorney. You may have a lifetime of problems and the school should eat the medical bills as well as paying for suffering. I can understand why you were not pulled from ther game after the first two incidents, but eight concusions are unaceptable for high-school sports.
