1173253 tn?1263496613 If your CPAP pressure is not effective, it can make your sleep apnea worse, leading to cough or nasal congestion. You should talk to your sleep doctor about optimizing your sleep apnea treatment.
Avatar m tn Have you tried using Breath-Rite nasal dilator strips or Nozovent clips? Sometimes, flimsy nostrils can collapse when lying down. If it helps, you may want to address this as well when you undergo further surgery. Your ENT can tell if this is the case. If your nose is stuffy, a dental appliance won't work. Take care of your nasal congestion first, and you may want to consider trying the oral appliance or CPAP again. You probably have significant tongue collapse.
Avatar m tn anything to reduce nasal congestion/swelling when laying down?
4915340 tn?1360965940 previous to Oct 22, 2012, my BP has historically been 110-120/80 and I never had headaches. I was diagnosed with UARS in 2005 but was given a CPAP with a nasal-aire vs a full face mask and any time I was stuffy I would discard the use of my CPAP. I haven't used it for several years now. The doctors are baffled, my sleep study did not reveal OSA (but when I mentioned UARS they looked like they were unaware of what that was).
Avatar n tn If you already have a humidifier and still experience these symptoms you may need a heated humidifier. In most cases this resolves nasal congestion and irritation if it is caused by CPAP. CPAP machines can cause air in the stomach-gas and bloating. Sleeping with head aligned with the body helps. If you want a raised head then the head end of the bed should be raised. Pillows should be kept to the minimum.
Avatar f tn You should consider taking care of your nasal congestion first, which will allow you to breathe better and also be able to benefit from CPAP for your sleep apnea. You're right—using a nasal cannula doesn't make sense if your nose is stuffy. See an ENT for your nasal congestion.

Avatar f tn Obesity and upper airway soft tissue abnormalities are known risk factor and smoking multiplies the risk by 3 times. Even alcoholism, nasal congestion, craniofacial abnormalities, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, and adenotonsillar hypertrophy can lead to such symptoms. Hence, the above mentioned conditions should be ruled out by physical examinations, thyroid profile and other blood tests. Meantime you need to go for weight reduction exercises, and as well as dietary modification.
Avatar n tn In most cases this resolves nasal congestion and irritation if it is caused by CPAP. Also if your mother has a deviated nasal septum then also it can cause allergy like symptoms. CPAP machines can also cause air in the stomach-gas and bloating. Lowering the CPAP pressure can help but do not do this without consulting your sleep specialist. Switching over to bilevel pressure or C-Flex may help your mother too. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.
1218873 tn?1300091216 I wonder, do you have nasal congestion during the day that is severe enough to force mouth breathing? Do you experience nasal congestion at night? Avatar n tn At the same time, I also experience, nasal congestion, runny nose, and past nasal drip. Only my left eye is affected about 95 percent of the time, and my lids usually become very painful, swollen, irritated, sensitive, and tearful. That temporarily disables me from being able to drive safely. > I feel my tear duct got damaged years ago from the required high pressures of 16 and 18 cm with a CPAP for several years..
612551 tn?1450022175 I had complained about waking up with a feeling of suffocation in recent months - I also have chronic nasal congestion - and trouble mares (not night mares). The pre-study questionnaire brings up the subject of dreaming.. so there may be a connection. This may lead to a CPAP to help me breath at night, in any case I will report anything I believe is useful.
Avatar m tn I tried several CPAP machines and half a dozen masks but was unable to tolerate them. Due to sinus congestion, I am a mouth breather and simply could not keep a mask on through the night. Recently visited a doc who does the pillar procedure. He saw the size of my uvula and suggested a uvulectomy along with the pillar procedure. After that is done he wants to scope my nose and see if he can get me breathing through my nose. Does this sound like a good course of action?
Avatar m tn I have had constant nasal congestion and nasal drip the the past five years. After my first pregnancy I developed an allergy to cats. We got rid of our cats 2 yrs ago. We have hardwood floors and new furniture and there is no relief. I have boxes of Kleenex everywhere and sleep very little because I cannot sleep. Allergist has put me on all sorts of combos of meds. I saw an ENT who said everything looks good. I do the saline nasal cleanse, Zyrtec twice a day and two nasal sprays twice a day.
1237284 tn?1267997794 This can give you sinus pain, pressure, post-nasal drip and congestion. Did you ever try using a Neti-pot or any other saline irrigation system nightly?
Avatar f tn Neti pot and tylenol cold helped me.
Avatar f tn I was prescribed with a nasal spray the other day to help dry up the post nasal drip that causes a wet cough. Antibiotics will not have any effect on viral infections. You can try steam inhalations. A hot bowl of water with Vick or Olbas Oil if you wish, put your head over the bowl and cover it with a towel and breathe in and out. Take care not to scald yourself. This will help to loosen up the blockage.
808904 tn?1307057809 Hi, your problem with deep breathing could be due to the nasal congestion. The constant runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion could be due to vasomotor rhinitis, in which the symptoms occur in response to a trigger, like eating spicy food or going outside in the cold. The primary treatment is simply avoiding the things that trigger your symptoms. It is often treated with a drying nasal spray (like Atrovent) and antihistamines like chlopheneramine and lovatidine are effective.
Avatar f tn Any tips on what is safe to take for severe nasal congestion. I haven't eaten solids for 2 days and my head feels like it's going to explode. I've done the saline, steamed, warm compress, Vicks, gargling with salt & drinking honey, lemon and lots of water with echinae.
5054005 tn?1362922551 I think my problem is more related to nasal congestion not to stopping breathing. I do revert to breathing through my mouth as my "dry mouth" will testify to. I do not like to sleep on my back. My sleep problems are also disturbed by troubled dreams. A sleep study may also pot some numbers on my dreaming. If I am in non-dream deep sleep sufficiently to get rested, then just putting up with the dreams my be all that I can or should do.
Avatar n tn If you already have a humidifier and you still experiences these symptoms you may need a heated humidifier. In most cases this resolves nasal congestion and irritation if it is caused by CPAP. Please discuss with your doctor. Take care! 967168 tn?1477584489 Are there any alternatives anyone has found helpful to a CPAP machine? I have got to find some relief and sleep more than an hour at a time.
Avatar f tn Hello purplegreen1234, I have a stuffy nose sometimes too at night. I use a product called Congestion Relief by a company called " hydraSense. This product is very helpful in relieving my congestion. The great thing about this product is that it is safe for long-term use with no rebound effect. It also has no chemical additives. It's actually 100% natural source seawater. It's much better than Dristan , for example, which I've heard can be somewhat addictive.
Avatar f tn Ive been trying everything to get relief. Netti pot (only helped for my nasal congestion), steam showers, vicks, essential oils, tylenol cold. But the only thing that provides some relief is cough drops and Robitussin and drinking lots of water... I think we just gotta tough it out.
