Cpap keep mouth closed

Common Questions and Answers about Cpap keep mouth closed

cpap

Avatar n tn Try something that will keep your mouth closed while you sleep.
Avatar f tn Sounds like you are getting air in the stomach from the machine. It happens when the sphincter that should keep the stomach closed is weak, particularly in those who have reflux problems. It is also common in those with higher pressures. There are machines and settings for those with higher pressures to help out, particularly with exhalation relief. About the tiredness... Are you using a full face mask?
1218873 tn?1300091216 the biggest factor in having the dry mouth is whether you can keep your mouth closed and breath in and out exclusively through your nose. I notice a difference almost immediately. The nasal mask setting should also make a difference. I was just in the sleep clinic yesterday and they did an adjustment to my machine and they bumped the ramp range. But then last night I had a lot of problem with mask leakage that I had not had since I switch the size of my mask.
Avatar m tn I have been using CPAP machine for over a yr. now and I have seen no improvement in my sleep. I use the nose pillow mask because of me being a side sleeper but I find me waking up with my mouth open and sometimes there is drool. Should I try a full mask to see if that would be any better for me?
1218873 tn?1300091216 Air blown over any surface will cool and dry it. There are chin straps available that are designed to keep the mouth closed if mouth breathing is chronic. (Maybe I should have used a different word? Standard?) I keep water at my bedside because I do sometimes awake with a very dry mouth. I want to be prepared to rehydrate (remember to always do that with the mask fully OFF!), re-mask, and get back to sleep. I think it happens if I lapse into mouth breathing for some reason.
Avatar m tn I have noticed that I am waking in the middle of the night and morning with a mouth that is so dry I cannot swallow...teeth and tongue really dry. I am definitely still mouth breathing, even with the CPAP. I also noticed over the last week that my tongue is yellowish (related?). I wake and really do not feel refreshed, like the CPAP is not really helping. I also have acid reflux, which compounds the problems. What can I do? Any suggestions?
Avatar n tn Interesting change since I am on the O2 is that I am no longer stuffy in the AM and my dry mouth at night is not as severe (sleep with mouth closed), still if I get the dry mouth I can barely breath. On O2 I feel I am somewhat better, but still not 'there'. I gasp at night, and barely snore...more like a purr. I hope you can comment one more time. Thank you in advance for your assistance. 332074 tn?1229560525 I use the full CPAP mask that covers my mouth and nose. At first it caused me a somewhat claustrophobic feeling and I always wanted to rip it off my face, but I got over that after a few days and now it is no problem. I sleep like a baby with it now.
Avatar n tn Oddly my eyes will become gritty even when lying down and having my eyes closed for a mere 20 minutes. Everything was fine in August 2015 before I began with CPAP. I only needed it until February 2016 as by then I had lost enough weight to not need it anymore. I used the CPAP on auto mode with 11 to 18cm pressure with nose pillows. They did sometimes leak on to my eyes.
Avatar m tn A full oral breathing tube goes way the heck down the trachea and has a balloon on the end to keep it in place. Since apnea closes off the area at the back of the mouth, one might think that a much shorter tube, just long enough to get past the the back of the tongue/soft palate might provide enough of an airway - without having to thread a tube so far down.
Avatar n tn You might want to google something like 'sleep apnea mouth breathing leaks' to find info on how cpap treatment is adversely affected by mouth breathing. The need for cpap is not based on how one feels or doesn't feel or how long it takes, but on diagnosis. Also, timing till one feels better is most realistically assessed by counting the time as starting after one knows their treatment is optimized and all the 'bugs' worked out. Good luck going forward.
967168 tn?1477584489 Have you tried a full face mask, it may be that you breathe through your mouth and if you have a nasal mask on your mouth is opening and the air gushes out through your mouth and causes you to feel panicky. A full face mask will allow you to breathe through your mouth which may be a bit more comfortable for you. Is your machine an automatic or fixed pressure unit.
1054090 tn?1343965695 mask which is nothing more than two gel pad which gently press up against they nostrils. If you can sleep with your mouth closed, a pillow system is preferred to a nose mask or a complete face mask. Unfortunately as the pressures rise, pillow systems become less effective. The only positive way to tell is to get the sleep study done. You life may depend on it!
5054005 tn?1362922551 I have had CPAP about 4b months
Avatar m tn Hi I know how you feel as I have same problems with my nose getting blocked etc and my mouth goes so dry my tongue sticks to roof of mouth. I told my cpap dr and he suggested I have a humidifier which attaches to cpap machine, I'm also on oxygen. This is my first week with humidifier and I feel so much better, I haven't had a blocked nose all week. Have you tried one of these?
525545 tn?1293181194 I have been using my CPAP machine for a month now. I thought I was suppose to start feeling better and not as tired. Why do I feel more tired when I wake up? I don't know what to do. Also I am using the sleep nose pillows and I have had a sore under my nose ever since I started using the CPAP what is causing this? I can't use the mask.
Avatar dr m tn No crowding. In fact, I have some good-sized gaps in my lower teeth. I have TMJ and wear a splint at night, which really helps me keep my mouth shut for CPAP. My splint is the same size as hubby's, so I probably have a fairly large jaw. I never had any wisdom teeth, so the other ones had plenty of room to roam free.
505751 tn?1225032462 Well, when someone develops Central Sleep Apnea as an adult, you have to ask, what damaged the brain/brainstem to cause it? The CPAP will have little effect on the Central part of the apnea. But it will help any part of the apnea that is obstructive. I may be wrong about this, but as I understand it, in central apnea, you loose the "drive to breath.
Avatar f tn I'm having the same problems and have the same mask,my pressure is on 13 and I'm not sleeping well at all, still wakes up tired and groggy
961503 tn?1247059639 s not being treated by either the CPAP, mouth piece or chin strap) and you are holding your breath, your body will do something (I'm not sure what that is) to wake you up so you can start breathing again. Is it possible that I'm pinching myself in my sleep to wake me up because I'm not breathing? The chin strap seemed to be working a couple of weeks ago and I was not bruising myself. Now all of a sudden, I'm waking up with bruises an it's scaring the **** out of me.
Avatar m tn i have mild obstructive sleep apnea and use a cpap,,,i was recently in hospital for some stomach surgery and noticed how much better i felt each morning after using oxygen at 2 liters with my cpap then when i was at home...even though i was in pain i woke every morning feeling very refreshed.. i feel the oxygen made a big difference in my recovery and feeling much better...could using oxygen at home just with the cpap give me the same feeling of being able "to take on the world" ...
Avatar n tn m reconsidering continuing to take Trazodone now that I have a CPAP and am hoping that maybe with CPAP I can learn to sleep without medication and the dry mouth due to this medication will go away.
1995824 tn?1330379049 I started to rub candle wax on my teeth. This lasted for 8 hours.I read a post of a chin guard to keep your mouth closed and prevent furthering dry mouth.I got one on amazon, great quality and awkward to use.It worked. My mouth stayed closed at night.Got 8 hours of sleep. As a back up I bought 2 teeth guards to keep the open sores from bonding to my teeth.Haven't used them yet.
Avatar f tn s during the test so she ordered oxygen for me (I had tried teh CPAP machine a few years back and was unable to tolerate it). My question is - I am a mouth breather (always have been), but the supplemental oxygen is through a nasal cannula. Is this method of supplying the oxygen sufficient since I breath through my mouth and not my nose or should I request a mask to wear instead? Right now my o2 is set at 2lpm if that makes any difference.
Avatar m tn Ask for some adjustment in the machine to overcome this. CPAP machines can also cause air in the stomach-gas and bloating. Lowering the CPAP pressure can help but do not do this without consulting your sleep specialist. Switching over to bilevel pressure or C-Flex may help you too. However, nothing should be tried without consulting the specialist. If nausea is not related to CPAP machine, then other causes will have to be looked into. Commonest cause of nausea is acidity.
