Common Questions and Answers about Cpap complications

cpap

Avatar n tn During the post-operative period, patients are often very weak and need aggressive rehab to regain their strength. There can be several causes that require a person to use CPAP, including complications of lung function following surgery (infection, lung collapse, fluid in the lungs, etc). Lung failure in these cases are typically temporary and resolve with treatment of the underlying cause. This process may take a while (days to weeks) during which time intermittent use of CPAP may be used.
Avatar n tn I did read some articles and it seems anesthesiologists in some facilities are screening patients for possible sleep apnea as some studies show patients with it have a shorter recovery with fewer complications if cpap is used postop. I don't know this site's policy on posting links, but I will say I saw several articles referenced on cpaptalk under the icon of a lightbulb in the topic of CPAP safety. Hope you find enough to make your point.
1572585 tn?1309245054 Hi everyone. I was dizgnosed with sleep apnea a few years ago... I used my CPAP machine for a while in the beginning and thaqt seemed to have helped. Latelly, Due to several factors such as stress, withdrawing from seroquel, withdrawing from xanax, and such, I have had to ask for sleep meds prescription. I take restoril which helps, however I stay in bed for 12 hours at a time... I decided to try cutting the capsule in half, to see if that would help with the amount of time I spend in bed...
Avatar m tn Inadequately controlled sleep apneas can cause hypertension and other complications. If you are having problems with CPAP therapy then discuss with your doctor for Bi PAP therapy. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn My baby was born at 1.88kg. I had gestational diabetes so they kept him for a few days to monitor him. Otherwise he was healthy and is gaining weight. He is 4months old now and weight 5.2kg.

332074 tn?1229560525 I know that they are going to put me on a cpap machine. I know I would do okay with the mask that is just the two little prongs that go in your nose. However in the past when I have had surgery I have gone crazy when they have put the mask over my mouth and nose. I have always had very bad allergies and can not stand to have anything touching my nose and mouth. So I was wondering how do they determine what is the best mask for you to have?
Avatar n tn My wife uses a cpap machine with moisture every night. She has had two bouts with pneumonia this winter which she never had before using the cpap machine. Questions: Can breathing in excess moist air into the lungs by means of the cpap machine overload the lungs with moisture and cause problems?
Avatar f tn Shhhhhhh - your brain and body are listening. Give yourself some positive self talk, such as... I can do ANYTHING for just 30 days. Sleeping in my own home and bed will be nothing like in that lab. I'm going to take advantage of this change to get 30 days of real quality sleep. I'm glad that CPAP increases my likelihood of a good surgical outcome and recovery. I'm glad the next 30 days I will be at reduced risk of heart attack and stroke.
Avatar m tn None of the doctors or technicians have been able to tell me why my oxygen levels are low even using a CPAP, and I am worried that it has to do with complications from having inhaled the gum. Two nights ago, as I went to lie down, I noticed a 'whirring' or 'whistling' noise that occurs deep in my chest when I inhale deeply.
Avatar n tn since using cpap machine started swelling in feet, ankles, hands and stomach. stopped using machine for 4 days swelling went away. started using again for 3 days swelling came back.
Avatar m tn ve lived my life in a state of exhaustion, until use of my cpap machine, and that has often caused very bad seizures. Without my cpap machine, I don't think I'd be here making this post.
Avatar m tn I noticed I had gained over 6 pounds since starting CPAP. After just one night without the CPAP I dropped 3 pounds, which I believe is all fluids. My question is this: Could CPAP use cause your kidneys not to filter out fluids from your blood? When using CPAP I do not get up during the night to urinate. After one night without using CPAP I did get up to go to the bathroom, my weight dropped by 3 pounds and the pain is greatly reduced.
Avatar n tn I have been using a CPAP machine for almost 3 months. From the night I used it I did not wake to go to the bathroom during the night. Although this was nice, I developed a problem immediately (from the first night) with swelling in my legs (calves, ankles, feet) and in my hands. I did NOT mention it to the sleep doctor because It was a month until my follow-up appointment and I never saw it listed as a side effect of CPAP therapy in materials I read.
Avatar f tn I had to discontinue using my cpap, due to chronic lung infections. Changing the tubing, keeping it spotless, did not help prevent infection for me. Stopping the cpap treatment, is the only thing that prevented the chronic lung infections...and I always used the humitifer, which never helped prevent any infection... I regret ever having the sleep study and I regret what all the money and time it cost me, and the suffering of 3 years of lung infections...I am so done using the cpap treatment!
1173253 tn?1263496613 I am not sleeping as I keep taking off the CPAP to blow my nose or to cough. Could I be allergic to the CPAP, or the dirt or germs in the tubing, or to the air that is sucked in thru the CPAP? No matter how good I feel in the day.....I get worse at night? Help Please.
514349 tn?1272801633 I have other sleep problems, but I have not yet had to go to a CPAP. I understand if I wish to go to a CPAP my doctor requires I do another overnight in hospital (or other sleep study center) CPAP test to determine the best "settings" for me. So far I am CPAP free.
Avatar f tn Hi Meagher sorry you are having problem with your CPAP the only thing i may suggest is another type of mask i dout if the CPAP machine would send out any toxic air what i my suggest is run the CPAP for a while please let me know how you get on........

Avatar f tn I've been on a CPAP for 2 1/2 weeks. I'm sleeping relatively well with it, 7-8 hours per night. Almost every day since I've had the CPAP I've had headaches. The headaches don't start when I get up, but rather a few hours later in the day. Earlier this week I saw my doctor for a check up and told him about these headaches, and he said they were real and probably caused by pressure on the brain.
Avatar m tn This machine dries up the eyes and nasal passages which causes irritation, burning and sneezing. However pulmonary fibrosis cannot be due to CPAP use. Alternatively uses of CPAP mask in pulmonary fibrosis can cause claustrophobia like symptoms. Lung scarring occurs due to pathological deposition of fibrous tissue. This is a progressive disease usually and hence needs frequent periodic monitoring.
Avatar n tn Post nasal drip is seen commonly in sinusitis, nasal polyps and allergies. Since all these causes have been excluded CPAP seems to be the most likely cause. CPAP is known to cause post nasal drip and dry cough in its users. I would suggest you to please consult an ENT specialist as soon as possible. Take care!
Avatar m tn Nasal CPAP at 11 cm reduced his RDI to 2.7. Lowest desat w/ CPAP was 91.
