Common Questions and Answers about Cpap chin strap

cpap

Avatar n tn ve tried to use CPAP for more than a year with no success, using full mask, nasal mask or nasal pillows with chin strap. They either keep me from falling asleep, or I can't get them easily reseated without leaks if I have to get out of bed during the night. I also have trouble keeping the headgear/chin strap in place even when it's correctly adjusted; it slips off my head. I have to over-tighten it; not only uncomfortable, but it irritates my skin. Have you tried CPAP Pro?
Avatar m tn Actually getting more sleep without the CPAP, by just using chin strap and nasal cannula for oxygen.
961503 tn?1247059639 s not being treated by either the CPAP, mouth piece or chin strap) and you are holding your breath, your body will do something (I'm not sure what that is) to wake you up so you can start breathing again. Is it possible that I'm pinching myself in my sleep to wake me up because I'm not breathing? The chin strap seemed to be working a couple of weeks ago and I was not bruising myself. Now all of a sudden, I'm waking up with bruises an it's scaring the **** out of me.

Avatar m tn s office and was given a chin strap. Upon returning, he convinced me that it was due to my manibular position and anxiety, and that I was probably not wearing my chin strap every night. I am now experiencing these extremely frightening problem with the chin strap on each time, and when I feel cool as clyde while falling asleep...so I know that it is not the problem. Do I need another study? What type? What are your thoughts regarding automatic titration vs.
5054005 tn?1362922551 And I had to purchase a full face mask because of allergies and they thought I was sleeping with my mouth open so they also gave me a chin strap. I keep going back and forth between the full mask and the nose mask with chin strap. It seems that I wake up about every 2-3 hours no matter which one I use. My numbers seem to be higher now than what they were during my sleep study and CPAP adjustment.
Avatar m tn I think you have to use a chin stap with a cpap?? or can she use it alone just to see if it helps. Were willing to try anything....
1218873 tn?1300091216 I use a Cpap and in no way was ever going to use one, then the Dr told me about all the health problems as it relates to apnea. I have short term memory problems that may get better or might be related to the lesions. I fought with the cpap the first two weeks, and threw the mask off only one night.
Avatar m tn While breathing in, tighten throat(contract glotis) and there will be sound from back of throat, then drop chin(rest chin on chest), hold breath as long as possible. Then chin up, close right nostril and slowly breath out through left nostril. 1995824 tn?1330379049 I bought the CPAP chin strap at Amazon for under $9.It is a 2 piece strap with velcro for adjusting.Awkward to use but I can sleep.
Avatar n tn My husband took about three or more weeks to feel comfortable and to stop waking up taking his mask off. You might want to try the nose only and a chin strap. This seemed to help and feel a lot better for my husband. every now and then he takes his mask off during the night but really don't remember why. You might want to try a sleeping pill till you get use to the feeling.
Avatar m tn For the past 4 years I use a chin strap to keep my mouth shut and my mask interface is simply nasal pillows held in place by a head harnes -- the Oxygen tubing plugs right into the CPAP hose (need an adapter) Talk to your CPAP supplier.
Avatar n tn Started CPAP a few years ago. Tried many masks, none fit properly, so I quit. Started again two nights ago after experiencing over half an hour of abnormal breathing in the night. Last night was very disrupted with the usual CPAP trouble: mask gets dislodged and leaks with small movements, and when I tighten it enough to not leak, the pressure hurts forehead and face. Woke this morning with the entire white of the eye from nose to iris blood red! Not painful but very disturbing.
1972385 tn?1343827076 Even if you do not have it, there are some cheap options like ordering chin strap to keep your mouth closed at night just like apnea patients must do. You can also develop the habit of sleeping on your side and not on your back; preferably the left side to ease any problem with esophageal reflux at night. The best thing to do is to get a sleep evaluation but if you cannot bring yourself to do that, these aforementioned options might help. Good luck.
Avatar f tn My husband uses a CPAP machine and for 5 years was very compliant. He began having trouble with the mask cutting into the bridge of nose. He has tried different masks, nasal pillows; I think everything that is available. He cannot get a good seal with any of them except the one taht cuts into his nose. Bandaids have not worked. Does anyone have a suggestion to protect his skin without compromising the seal. We would greatly appreciate any input.
Avatar n tn I've been using a CPAP with the full nose and mouth mask for about a year. Within the past two months I've noticed that I'm going bald on the crown of my head. I'm 33 and have been dreading losing my hair but the area of hair loss appears to correspond to exactly where the headgear strap goes across the crown of my head. The pattern of hair loss is actually has the shape of the strap where is falls across my head.
359574 tn?1328360424 should have a new type of CPAP mask, right now I'm using a nasal pillows, and because my big mouth flys open when I sleep causing way to much dry mouth and dry throat , so I use a second head strap that I dislike because it give me a headache to try to keep my mouth shut... this new system has the chin strap build in.. OOO Joy.. Our Kids wil be home late next week so we have taking out the Christmas decor,, thats it for now. take care JB..
Avatar f tn There is no pressure on your face. I do have to wear a chin strap or I breathe thru my mouth and any benefit is lost. Make sure you have a humidifier on your machine. There is also a new device I've noticed in the news that fits over the nostrils, works by creating a backflow of air that keeps the throat open, and is disposable. I am looking into it. I learned after my hospitalization last year that it is believed that 1/3 to 1/2 of all Afib cases are caused by sleep apnea.
Avatar f tn hmmm all your responses have made me re-think surgery... Maybe I just need to take off the 25 pounds I put on that made my apnea go from mild to severe. I tried the nasal pillow first & it seems like my nostril were larger than my head! (from the pressure). thanks for the info!!
Avatar f tn My husband was recently given a cpap and a brand new mask. He used it a couple of nights and really felt great in the mornings when he woke up. Friday night he used the mask, slept in a recliner (he is a heavy man and has a hard time sleeping lying down) and literally slept for 9 straight hours in the same position. When he woke up he felt so great, but he had a hard red lump in the middle of his eyebrows.
1287461 tn?1312430577 I’m having surgery tomorrow and i use a CPAP, will the nurses work with me to find a way to use my mask that won’t put too much pressure on the incision?
Avatar m tn You do not have to change to a full face mask. Buy or rig a chin strap to hold your mouth shut when asleep. Your doctor's assesment of you as fat and lazy and a hypo is unfortunately a common misunderstanding of sleep apnea patients. Did you know that apnea actually causes weight gain, especially around the middle? It causes sleep spells just as you describe. It robs you of the energy to do more than just what's necessary for survival.
Avatar m tn My last surgery was on upper and lower jaws and chin. I still have severy sleep apnea. I cant use cpap or bipap machine that is why I had surgery's. Everytime I go to sleep doctor he says cpap so I quit going to him. Is there any thing that can be done?
Avatar n tn If you want to go with the assumption it is the garden variety obstructive sleep apnea, you could get a loaner data capable auto titrating cpap machine to use at home and the data would show what pressure would alleviate your episodes of reduced and/or stopped breathing. The machines are programmed that an episode has to meet certain criteria before it acknowledges them as events, so brief normal events are taken into consideration.
Avatar m tn She showed me how quickly I could unsnap if ot in my case with my CPAP strap slid it out of the hooked area. Once I know that I had control of the situation I knew I could do this. Most of it was phycology (sp) for me. Now with an MRI I have to take something because I know if I panic that I cannot just jump out of there and get out quickly. If you do panic you can even just slide it over you head if you have to.
Avatar f tn Hi Ive noticed some mild numbness/spasm in my lower right jaw/chin area. Its been off an on for the past couple of days? I do have chronic neck, shoulder and upper back muscle tension with some occasional radiating tingling in arms and hands. Frequent joint pain due to occupation (massage therapist) and atypical symptoms of crohns. I have noticed more tightness and compression in my neck even with regular massage ,stretching and exercise.
1302038 tn?1439575232 Can you call your sleep clinic for a temporary loaner cpap - this is what I did while waiting for my cpap. Also, try to sleep with your head elevated, head and chin pointed back kind of in a cpr position - thereby opening your airway while your sleep. Also make sure you don't eat anything 3-4 before bedtime.
Avatar m tn I too had difficulty with my cpap at the beginning, even quit for a few months. Turned out my pressure was not right for my needs. Any chance you have a strap going around the back of your neck that could be pinching a muscle and/or impinging a nerve thus causing this tingling? Getting used to it is probably not going to make a difference in the tingling. That would be my first thought, but I would also want to know my machine is meeting my needs.
9780765 tn?1405910914 That is a great move having the sleep study. They will tape a bunch of electrodes all over your brain and heart etc., but you can just ignore them as they are very light weight. They will be able to diagnose quite a bit from the study. I happen to have sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and have dealt with bouts of seizures.. which Thank God, I was able to alleviate (the seizures) through just diet change. My alternative medicine work up indicated that I had some intolerance to both yeast and dairy.
