Avatar m tn I read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle about treatments for snoring and sleep apnea and I watched the snoring clinic's testimonials on YouTube as well (just search for the clinic's name). Hopefully that will help with your decision. The article is entitled, "Say Goodnight to Snoring with simple surgeries," . It goes in depth about some of the treatments now available in San Francisco medical clinic, http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?
Avatar m tn So, you could have obstructive sleep apnea and this is diagnosed with a sleep study. As you wait for your evaluation, you could avoid taking alcohol and quit smoking and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. And aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. Good Luck. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
559187 tn?1330782856 For whatever it's worth, I have sleep apnea, MS and degenerative disk disease. Also insomnia which could be caused by pain and sleeping meds (go figure!). I saw my pulmonary specialist/sleep doc after the dx of MS and he said there is a link to MS. He wants to repeat sleep tests every two years. I can't recall what the numbers from my last study are but I'll be repeating the test soon; I feel the need to research this more. The more I read about apnea, the more concerned I get.
Avatar n tn Drinking alcohol can deffinetly make sleep apnea and snoring worse because it causes the muscles to relax and make obstruction easier. Smoking also increases snoring and/or sleep apnea because it irritates and causes inflammation of the nasal and oral (pharyngeal) tissues. Usually sleep docs recommend no alcohol 4 hours before bed time. I would deffinetly recommend a sleep study ASAP.
Avatar n tn The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends dental devices for patients with mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea for whom the CPAP is not suitable or those who have failed on the CPAP machine. The two common types of devices are the Mandibular advancement/ Mandibular Repositioning Device and the Tongue retaining device. They are effective for mild to moderate sleep apnea and are relatively easy to use.
Avatar m tn Sleep apnea, appropriately treated using any modality, can normalize your heart risk factors. This is why it's important to undergo a sleep test with your device in place to make sure that your numbers are within normal limits.
Avatar f tn Hi, Dr Carolyn Dean talks about sleep apnea and Magnesium supplementation . If you google : Magnesium and sleep Apnea. I have family members who also refuses to use CPAP, so they are trying Mg instead. Still at the starting stage. But what I could tell you is that snoring is definitely less.. :) Sleep apnea causes high BP, memory loss, headaches, poor concentration, fatigue and so many more.. So I'd say, give Mg Glycinate a try..
Avatar f tn How do I avoid swollen eyelids every morning after sleeping with CPAP? This discussion is related to Swollen eyes & CPAP.
612551 tn?1450022175 The pillow was found to be an effective and easily used treatment for mild (respiratory disturbance index [RDI] 5 to 19) and moderate (RDI 20 to 40) obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. In turn it helped to increase the REM stage of sleep and increased oxygen saturations. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn The operaration seemed to be sucessful for about a year and then I put a few pounds back on the old bread basket and my sleep apnea returned. My snoring was not as bad though. My doctor feels that my body is not tolerant of the extra weight and that is the problem. It is not that excessive either, only abot 20lbs. total. Anyway I had to go on the CPAP. I couldn't tolerate it either when I had first gotten it and that is why I got the surgery.
1307298 tn?1305946851 Has anyone ever used Provent Therapy for sleep apnea? If so, what was your experience? If you also had tried a CPAP, which did you like better? I'm not happy using a CPAP and I thought the Provent would be a good thing to try.
Avatar m tn 12 i had a motorbike accident, i suffered a strong Concussion that caused to me a strong headache for 3 days, also i suffered a Whiplash, some injuries on bottom of the Spinal and shortly after this accident was diagnosed a Severe Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnea. I never had any kind of Sleep Disturbances or Sleep Apnea before this accident, then i would like to know if this issue can be linked with this motorbike accident?
Avatar f tn Hi, My husband has sleep apnea and had these symptoms. He's not overweight or a smoker but the brochure the doc gave us said that both of those are risk factors, and since your boyfriend has them it might be worth getting checked out. Sleep apnea can put people at an increased risk for heart attacks and strokes, besides which it just ***** to be sleepy all the time and have daily headaches.
Avatar f tn My husband has a CPAP which helps him breathe but he hates it ... like really HATES this machine. He says it is very difficult for him to sleep with the nose mask on (and especially when he has a cold, but who sleeps well with a cold after all). However when he tries to sleep without the CPAP, he wakes and snores so much and so loud, he doesn't really sleep at all (during his sleep test, they determined he woke between 75-90 times per night). This has been going on for over 2 years.
Avatar f tn do you sleep on your back? my husbands snoring was always better if he could keep laying on his side rather than on his back....episodes of sleep apnea are also improved by not laying on your back.. I once read an article saying to sew tennis balls inside the back of your pj's than everytime you rolled over you would feel them and adjust back to your side again...bit extreme but may get you thru the next while...
Avatar m tn Having open nasal passageways is important if you want to eventually benefit from sleep apnea treatment options, especially with CPAP. Once your nose is open, give CPAP another try. There are many ways of gradually adjusting to using CPAP. Another option is to use a formal mandibular advancement device that's made by dentists (not the boil and bite over the counter anti-snoring models), but you have to have the right anatomy and severe sleep apnea patients don't respond as well.
783663 tn?1236200728 Of even greater consequence than poor sleep is sleep apnea. Snoring increases your risk of having it. It can deprive the brain and body of needed oxygen, flood the body with stress hormones, affect appetite horrnones, and increase risk of stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, and diabetes. You might want to consider being evaluated for the possibility of sleep apnea. Should you have it, a CPAP machine will usually resolve it, and the bonus benefit is it also addresses the snoring.
Avatar m tn It could also indicate obstructive sleep apnea, diagnosed by a sleep test and treated by CPAP. For snoring you should avoid taking alcohol and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. Aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. If this does help with your symptoms check with your doctor to rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Regards.
Avatar m tn It sounds like some of your symptoms may be sleep apnea. I had severe memory loss, snoring, constant tiredness, and headaches before I was sent for the sleep test. Within 3 days I felt normal again after getting CPAP. And my sleep apnea was mild to moderate. Sleep apnea has also been associated with heart problems in various research studies. So, get a reliable doctor who will make the necessary referrals.
Avatar f tn Passed the stress test with flying colors, but the doc said my events could be result of sleep apnea. Became a sleep apnea patient 2 years ago, and did not have any pvcs until June of 2015. I then had two pvcs, about a week apart, while wearing my mask. Back to the cardiologist. My loop recorder he implanted (continuous EKG reading) in my chest shows "noise" during the pvcs such that he can't read the EKG. My cardiologist considers this noise to be a seizure.
Avatar f tn Excessivly loud snoring is a sign of sleep apnea. My mom used to be louder than a train before she was diagnosed and treated. Hope you ladies can find some way to quiet your husbands'. Maybe allergies are to blame?
1580703 tn?1651904887 This person's post was a little confusing as he mentions both sleep apnea and central apnea in one breath (sorry!), and I don't know if he's interchanging them. Treatment for central apneas are a little different than sleep apnea. Central apneas result from a literal disconnect of the brain to the muscles that help one breathe. CPAP can help some central apneas, but drug therapy I think is the most common treatment. I have about 6 years on CPAP, or about 15,000 hours.
1054090 tn?1343965695 If you do have sleep apnea, the treatment is that you will sleep with a CPAP machine. It stands for Continuos Positive Air Pressure. You wear a mask that blows air down your passages to keep them from closing when you sleep. Cause when they close is when you stop breathing. Id it is determined you have sleep apnea it is vital that you wear the cpap eveytime!! You can die from sleep apnea just as easily as a baby can die from sids.
Avatar m tn I have a question. Craig had a sleep study done and it showed sleep apnea and lack of REM sleep. He has been waking up soaked in sweat for several weeks, and he is always up two or three times each night. Do any of you know if sleep apnea is more common in MS? Do you think it may be related to the muscles in the throat and diaphragm getting weak and losing tone? Or maybe it is a central problem?
956292 tn?1334054869 m thinking more clearly and the fatigue is better with the Provigil and the other medicine to help me get a deeper sleep. MS and other brain diseases can cause sleep disorders including sleep apnea. I would highly recommend a visit to the sleep disorder clinic for the sleep study if your insurance pays the cost (highly costly).
Avatar f tn I snore so loud I get kicked to the couch and my wife can still hear me with the bedroom door shut. I was dxd with sleep apnea and can't wear the mask because I am claustrophobic.
Avatar m tn I have seen many specialists in regards to my snoring and sleep apnea (mild - did a sleep study 4 years ago, I am sure that my sleep apnea has worsen a bit). Some of the different specialists that I have seen are: ENT docs, Otolaryngologists, Internal Medicine/Respirologist, Dentist, and Sleep Disorder doctor. I have tried the CPAP for 2 years (hate it) and I am currently using the mouth-guard (where my jaw is moved forward).
