Coughing with phlegm

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing with phlegm

coughing

It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough.
Drinking more water, as well as drinking carbonated beverages or tea with lemon may help thin this phlegm. Eating or drinking dairy products can make phlegm worse. Also, if coughing and phlegm production is severe, you could also give her some over-the-counter cough medications. Hope this helps.
You can also break ribs or tear intercostal muscles (the muscles between your ribs) with severe coughing.) Don't cough any harder or more frequently than your body demands. I find that using the inhaler helps to bring the phlegm up much more esily. You should be using your inhaler by the clock every 3 - 5 hours according to your prescription. This will open your airways and allow the phlegm to come up more naturally. Feel better.
I have been coughing up thick clear phlegm speckled with gray. Not constantly, but a few times a day. I was diagnosed as a child with post nasal drip and I live in an area notorious for causing allergies. I do experience sinus congestion fairly regularly. For the last several months, my right lung seems sore or tight when I take deep breaths, but it improves almost entirely when I exercise.
I have been coughing up phlegm daily for around 7 years. I've tried antibiotics several times without any success. I've had x-rays and mri scans but nothing showed up. Around 18 months ago my voice started to change. I was then prescribed omeprazole 20 mg capsules which make a slight difference and my voice returned to normal. But I still have to tap my chest and often have to get someone to hit my back to dislodge the phlegm which is milky white/ beige globules and quite a lot of it.
Well, you don't have COPD. If you did you would be coughing up phlegm and your breathing would be compromised. It sounds like inflammation. Try taking schisandra chinesnis. It is an herb that is both anti-inflammatory and drying. There are no side effects. My daughter had a relatively similar problem and this herb helped enormously.
My mother has been coughing constantly for the past 3 to 4 months and brings up a lot of clear phlegm, she has disturbed sleep because of this and the constant coughing is wearing her out and makes her really tired. I feel so helpless to see hear suffering this way.
Hi not sure if anyone will know this but worth a try, i have smoked for 41 years mostly roll ups with no filters or anything, but about 3 plus years ago i started putting filters in and after a few months started coughing up green phlegm i asked the doctor he just said getting older and smoking, Some days it seems worse than others its really strange, i don't smoke load about 15 a day but there dead thin and i only smoke half at a time.
Hi, welcome to the forum, your symptoms are suggestive of acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. As you have continued production of sputum, and also has past history of smoking. The yellowish sputum is suggestive of bacterial infection. Sputum should be subjected to gram stain and culture and even pseudomonas spp. should be ruled out. Antibiotic therapy is very effective in improving clinical outcome.
I too have been having coughing attacks where I cough until I vomit. I am on acid reflux meds and nasal spray to help postnasal drip. This has been going on for about 2 months. I had this before about 3 years ago. The dr. tells me there is nothing they can do about it. It's really bad in the fact I can't go anywhere without having facial tissue and a sack or something to vomit in, cause I never know when I'll have an attack. Usually I cough up a lot of phlegm, but sometimes I actually vomit.
Lived with a father who smoked, and he himself seemed to have the same problem. Coughing up phlegm, tons of mucus. My mother had to wash so many handkerchiefs. We lived on a farm back then, and now I live on a farm as well, and have a husband who also smokes. It seems after I finish eating I often have lots of clear mucus that needs to get out. I can feel like it all situated in my nasal cavity, plus it needs to leave my throat as well. It doesn't matter what I eat or drink.
I have been having constant phlegm in throat, with a annoying tickle that makes me cough for about almost 6 weeks now. It started out as a virus. Then it was a visious cycle after that of allergies, post nasal drip and asthma. I have switched blood pressure medication now for the third time. I just stopped taking the last one which the doctors told me I should start seeing relief as in just a couple of days. I'm worried that this cough is not going to go away.
The cold eventually went away, but since then I have been consistently coughing up clear phlegm 10-20 times a day. Usually, it's just small amounts, and I cough it up to try and clear my lungs and throat. I went to my doctor about a month ago and he performed a lung function breathing test and checked my blood oxygen levels and said that everything was normal. So he prescribed Nasonex which I have been taking for about a week, but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference.
I have actually been through that when i was around my 10-12th weeks of pregnancy. I had a VERY bad cough along with gagging and lots of PHLEGM EWW!! lol and plus i stopped smoking also so my body was cleaning itself out ,but my doctor prescribed me some robitussin with NO ALCOHOL and it worked like a charm. I am not sure if they sell that over the counter but if you go to the drug store you can ask but remember its NO ALCOHOL. Hope i helped.
I'm coughing so bad that I'm throwing up...any ideas on what can help it? I've done it twice now, and I think I pulled a muscle in my tummy from coughing and throwing up at the same time.
However, if the cough is severe and very forceful, there's a slight risk of pulling or loosening stitches that have been used during the surgery, which may or may not be a problem. Also, if you are coughing up colored phlegm (yellow, brown, green, etc) then you most definitely need to be seen by your doctor - it could mean an infection. I've also had a hysterectomy several years ago and I know how painful it can be to cough after an abdominal surgery.
I am seeing my GI this week but was just wondering if anyone else had this with treatment? Is it normal for side effects to hit 3 to 4 days after shot on Friday? I seem to feel achy and headaches on the weekend and then come Monday I start with the sweats and I cant eat if I eat I get sick to my stomach. I dont feel better until about Thursday and then here comes Friday shot time again.
there r many related conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, many with it also have a hiatal hernia and with that u will have GERD...EDS is a Chiari related condition....so in that way it is inter related. That said, I would cough all the time and had post nasal drip which is sinus related and that can be affected from the overcrowding of chiari...post nasal drip can also cause GERD. And ne laughing I did would lead to coughing and gagging....
I have always coughed up brown flecks in my phlegm. But now, I have been coughing up dark grey after having some chronically infected teeth pulled. Could this be a result of the local anesthetic injections, or a worsening of the copd? I can only get rid of bronchitis for about a month before it comes back every time. Antibiotics (doxicycline) seem to have the inside of my mouth raw, with white patches on my tongue and a few white blisters in mouth, also. Now I'm on Penicillin for the teeth.
I have noticed my eyes are puffy most mornings too along with the coughing. Did you get that? A little? We live in a really old house and we have natural gas for cooking and heating. We had a bad gas leak once and old pipes removed- new ones put in, and the plumber explained that "residue' from inside the old pipes was all over the place under the house. I am aware that gas can give people all sorts of respiratory and flu like/asthma like symptoms, among many other ailments...
after about 2 months i began coughing again but this time it was more phlegmmy, I was coughing up brown and green phlegm. I went to the doctors again and they diagnosed me with sinusitis, gave me a weeks worth or anitbiotics and said that should work. The coughing did go down and the colouration of the phlegm lessened but the phlegm never went away.
I had cold/flu in Dec 2007, since then i've been clonstantly clearing my throat of phlegm, it is clear phlegm. I'm not sure i'm meant to cough it up or not, but i'm scared to swallow it made me gag and a few months after my cold which scared me. This morning, I cleared my throat as usual, but 3 times there were traces of blood in it. It's still clear but just with little bits of blood in it, one was a streak of blood. There was alot more clear phlegm.spit than there was blood.
For a long time now, I have been coughing up thick gooey phlegm. In the phlegm, I also seem to cough up crusty stuff from the preforation. It is driving me crazy and my ENT doesn't have any long term solutions. Should I go for more testing, is there something else happening??
