Coughing when lying down

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing when lying down

Avatar_f_tn when you lie down, phlegm or mucus trickles down from your nose into your throat which could be causing your symptoms. Are yu breathless too when lying down? That would point towards a cardiac cause for your symptoms. Let us know about the chest xray and CT scan of your sinuses reports. You should try some steam inhalation, saline nasal drops, and oral antihistamne medications and see if it helps with your symptoms. Keep us posted on how you are doing and if you have any doubts. Regards.
Avatar_f_tn Have you had an imaging study of your thyroid - either ultrasound or CT scan? What is your exact diagnosis - meaning do you have an autoimmune hypothyroid condition like Hashimoto's? Autoimmune thyroid conditions cause thyroid swelling.
Avatar_m_tn Also this occurs only when lying on my back or lying on my left side but never when lying chest down or standing stright upward. Also, after a deep breath when feeling the ronchi sound it sort of clears it for the next 30 seconds or so i.e. a second consecutive immidiate deep breath will not result the sound (only if I wait 30 seconds or so). Chest x-rays are normal. Bronchoscopy of the lungs was performed and came out with no findings. No coughing or breathing difficulty.
454606_tn?1361929280 I have also experienced a loss of sensation in my toes, and can no longer move them well. Since sitting up makes my pain worse, I have been lying down. I am on oxygen at night, but I have noticed in these past few days I become sleepy while lying down, so I put my O2 on to take a nap. The increased O2 wakes me up, and I feel fine, no longer sleepy. It makes sense to me that lying down is causing me the same problems I was having only during sleep.
Avatar_n_tn During the day, when I am up and around, it reverts to some slight shortness of breath and slight pressure in the right lung and a tickle/some pressure in the throat). At night, when I first lay down, I have a little shortness of breath but can get to sleep. After about 2-3 hours I suddenly can't breathe and my right lung aches badly, so it wakes me up. I feel like the throat may be constricting also.
Avatar_n_tn the weird thing is I never get them when i'm being active.. or even when I exercise. It's usually when I sit down alone, or am home alone, when others are around I don't tend to notice them as much. Not to mention I check my pulse constantly. I do drink caffeine such as coffee and sodas, chocolate..
Avatar_m_tn I thought it was a contentment thing as he only did it when actually in the process of lying down. He slowed down a lot in his last few months which I attributed at the time to his age. I thought he was just slowing down as he grew older. Unfortunately Darcy passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve after being diagnosed with Cancer the day before. It was only the week leading up to Christmas that he displayed any other signs of something being wrong (lethargy and went off his food 2 days prior).
Avatar_f_tn The most common cause of such a presentation is GERDS. lying down allows fluid to seep into the trachea, and alveoli, and this precipitates a coughing fit when awakening until it clears and you have been standing a while.
Avatar_n_tn as i talk to more and more parents and looked up toddlers coughing while lying down on google, there are TONS of kids that are going through this too!!! and nobody knows the reason behind it.. they are the exact same symptoms with no concrete answers, and no meds are helping these children! my friend who is a 2nd grade teacher, said that in her school,classroom..
Avatar_f_tn I received the MRI report and it states that the cerebellar tonsils are low lying without meeting the criteria for chiari malformation. Is it possible to have symptoms without herniation being obvious on the MRI? I'm at a loss here--everything points to MS, but there are clearly no lesions on the MRI.
Avatar_m_tn Ever since then, I've heard a noise from my lungs when lying down at night, when I breathe in. It's sort of an abrupt whooshing or puff sound, fairly quiet, that occurs about 2/3 of the way through the inhale. I notice it maybe 70-80% of the time when lying awake at night.
Avatar_f_tn I am feeling sharp pain on both sides of my lower abdomin when I cough. I have noticed it happes only when I am lying down. Is it normal??
561964_tn?1283802216 I only cough when I lay down at night to sleep. I get a tickle feeling in my throat and it makes me cough. Is this an allergy? I have never had any allergies before so I am not sure.
Avatar_m_tn It got more frequent and usually when I was sitting down or lying down. Just over a month ago I got a series of sore throats, they’d get better then another would start after a couple of days. Whether or not I got a sore throat seemed to depend on if I lay flat on my back. I started to prop myself up and the sore throats stopped, but the cough is still there.
Avatar_n_tn im 31yrs having choking in the noght if sleeps on supine position. choking when having severe cough. laryngoscopy done -normal. taken antirefluctory treatments 1 and half months no improvment still. endoscopy not im afraid to sleep.any of you experienced this please answer.
Avatar_f_tn The pain in my head is relieved by lying down. The doctor was asking me if I was going through some kind of withdrawels. REALLY???? NOPE! I'm just really, really sick. I have been put on prescription cough medicine, including prescription cough syrup. It is helping, and my cough is now coming from my if things are losening up. I really don't know if this is a cold or a severe allergy reaction. It only happens this time of year.
Avatar_n_tn We try to avoid doing them within 1 hour of bedtime (or lying down), because some of the irrigation fluid drains out later on, and we prefer to be awake and not lying down (when possible), to gently blow the residual warm salt-water out of each nostril. Keep tissues (unscented) handy. (a) First, we each bought a NETI-POT an 8 ounce little ceramic teapot without a cover, from a health food store. Some people who do Yoga use neti-pots (hence the East-Indian sound of NETI-POT).
Avatar_m_tn - Constant coughing (most when I am sitting, when it's hot outside, or when the air is wet, but other times as well; no link to excercise), every day - Short, stabbing pains in my upper chest, an inch or two below the clavicule (both sides), my left armpit my left shin bone (when running), my shoulders (especially when leaning on them), and occasionally my upper or lower back; something, usually more than one something, hurts every day - Drawn-out, aching pains in my left calf muscle (when sit
171267_tn?1199874189 Just sit slowly, and sit down before lying down. Try your right side before your left when lying down too, some people notice the left side makes it worse, or at least more noticable. You'll find this comes and goes, most likely. Sometimes it won't happen and sometimes it will (usually right when you've stopped noticing ;) You sound normal, if anxious, to me. I also have anxiety issues. Many of us share that in common as well. Hang in there.
Avatar_f_tn This could be caused by exertion headaches which present with pain during or following physical or passive exertion like sneezing, coughing, or bowel movement. If the pain while coughing is recent, it is best that you check with your doctor for proper evaluation. Direct clinical examination and further tests such as imaging studies will help with the diagnosis. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar_m_tn It began in 1976 and re occurs every 5 to 6 years. I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out.
Avatar_m_tn Due to that I have been suffering from acute coughing, which has now become chronic. when I saw the doctor, he gave me antibiotic 'Claricid'. when sinus went down and mucus decreased to produce, coughing become lesser, but not totally stopped, and it starts suddenly with continuous coughing. Now again I have a sinus attack and the coughing has been increased. A continuous prolonged coughing and taking out thick saliva type mucus, even some food with it if I have taken something. Pl.
Avatar_n_tn when I cough I get a headache at the top of my head and if I cough a lot I hold my head. It subsides after coughing. I also get it after bending down and then standing up. I had an MRI and all is OK. I don't have it lying down. I often have to cough something up from my vocal chords. It feels like an allergy. Can you advise?
Avatar_f_tn My body produces very very large amounts of clear sticky fluid, as much as a quart of mucus every night, that chokes me and forces me to cough severely to bring it out so I can breath. I feel like I am drowning from the inside. This is especially bad when lying down, making sleep very difficult! Elevated beds or sitting up provides little help. It is also bad when bending over or sitting. After extensive testing over many years Doctors say it is caused by allergies or reflux.
Avatar_n_tn I had mitro vavle replacement surgery four years ago. I still have problems with coughing especially when lying flat down. I too had pnuemonia after my surgery and had to go back in the hospital for another week. I know each patient is different and my valve had to be replaced. I'm sorry that I don't have any answers. I wish your mom the best.
