Coughing when i lay down

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing when i lay down

coughing

Ever since then, I've heard a noise from my lungs when lying down at night, when I breathe in. It's sort of an abrupt whooshing or puff sound, fairly quiet, that occurs about 2/3 of the way through the inhale. I notice it maybe 70-80% of the time when lying awake at night.
Whenever I lay on my back for any length of time (more than 30 minutes), such as to watch a movie, I begin having coughing fits that last about 10 or 15 minutes and sometimes cough up phlegm, like what happens when one has a cold. I've been told I have non-allergic rhinitis and I have some allergies, but I am not around allergens when these "fits" happen. Are these episodes anything I should be concerned about?
I can breathe through my nose regularly while i'm up. When i lay propped up I still breathe fine. When i am in my bed. Can't breathe at all. I wake up with a dry sore tongue and dry sore throat. This has been happening more recently and it is starting to worry me. Can neone tell me what is going on?
Today I have had this uncomfortable chest pain and it hurts when I lay down. Its not quite heartburn but I do have a shortness of breath and feel a little dizzy. What do you feel this could be? I understand that me panicking about whats wrong with me certainly doesnt help.
My problem is that over the last two days I now get palpitations when ever I lay down from standing....I have even had a couple when I have sat down quickly. I took myself to ED (ER)this morning as it is freaking me out. I have never had them before when I lay down. Of course they did not catch any and said they are benign but it really has me worried. Why all of a sudden would this develop. I am a 38 year old female. I have my period at the moment but never had these with any other period.
I have a 2 year old, when she lay down she coughs alot like she can't breath or like something you were drinking when down the wrong way and you cough to try to get it up..... last night she kept waking up crying saying it hurt any advice or ideas on what could be wrong?
Why does it feel like I always have a weez in my chest and I cough alot when I lay down at night? I don't smoke either. I feel like I'm choking every night. I even lay back to watch a movie and the coughing starts! Does anyone know why?
I've also been coughing up white-ish phlegm balls. Also , When I lay down for bed or when I first wake up in the morning, I have a crackling at the bottom of my throat. ( like poprocks going off in there) Any Ideas on what it could be? I'm sure I've had this before, but I don't remember my coughs lasting this long.Or giving me headaches This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/283430'>Is it Chronic Bronchitis, Bronchitis, or a viral infection?
As soon as I calm down, it calms down. I am still using the sinus bath, albuterol when I can't stand it anymore and occassionally a small sip of Robitussin, usually just before bed. So, I guess I am "managing" it. We're heading for Europe in a week or so and I am very curious how I will feel in a completely different environment over a couple of weeks. I'll report back after the trip.
But now it seems as if I have stuff stuck in the upper area of my chest and when I lay down I begin to wheeze like light asthma wheezing. When i wake up in the morning about 30min later in seems to go away. I don't want to use the inhaler unless I seriously have too. At times mucus that comes up appears to be string like and any other mucus appears to be clear as opposed to yellow before. Will this wheezing go away? Should I worry?
Since then, I've been continually coughing and wheezing, especially when I lay down. I can hear fluid in my lungs when I breathe. Will this go away like the flu or should I persue a medical appointment?
My runny nose is also going away too, but the thing that is constant and never changing is my coughing. I have been coughing a lot and it seems there is no stop to it. I can't even sleep without coughing every 3 minutes. and it's usually two coughs then stop. I have taken everything from sore throat candy, to tea, to running the shower full heat and sit in the bathroom like a sauna, to gargling salt water, to taken the medicine they gave me at the clinic, to drinking a ton of water.
I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough. I have a rather difficult anxiety problem when it comes to doctors so I try to home remedy what I can and only see drs if totally necessarry.
My oldest son would have perfectly clear lungs but had a lot of fluid behind his ears(some drs think its ok to have fluid back there as long as its not infected but hello, if its causing problems?!) that would cause him to cough.(weird I know but ears can do that it was worse when he would lay down) He never complained of ear pain either. They put him on a prescription nose spray and an antibiotic and it cleared him up. It was a temporary fix but at least we identified the problem.
When i lay down to sleep i start to cough uncontrollably then i vomit a clear mucus like substance then after i catch my breath i can fall back to sleep this has been happening for like a week what's wrong with me? I don't have a fever and i also don't recall being sick.
I have been experiencing pressure in the back of my head and neck, neck stiffness and pain, tingling and numbness in thumb and forefinger (left side), complete loss of sensation that comes and goes in my feet and toes, unsteady gait, frequent urination (sometimes loss of control) visual disturbances, left eyelid droops, loss of peripheral vision (comes and goes) popping sensations in neck and back when stretching, horrible pain with coughing straining laughing yawning that is located in back of
A couple of weeks ago I had a head cold, but every since then I have been coughing up this brownish phelgm stuff. At night when I lay down I can hear my self breath like a rattle or something from my chest. I feel ok I guess except this stupid cough and yucky stuff and it leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. What should I do to get rid of this? Should I be worried because I don't thik I have ever had this before and I am now 30.
I find my throat and mouth gets really dry when I recline/lay on my back. I find it hard to breath when this happens. Feels like there is some flem caught in my throat. And the air I'm breathing in doesn't give me the oxygen I need. Reminds me of inhailing some hair spray with air by accident. I use to smoke, quite about 8 months ago, this problem seemed to go away. But started back up again now that I am taking laxatives on a daily basis for my IBS.
I only cough when I lay down at night to sleep. I get a tickle feeling in my throat and it makes me cough. Is this an allergy? I have never had any allergies before so I am not sure.
I started to prop myself up and the sore throats stopped, but the cough is still there. The cough sounds like a bark when I sit up, but when I sit back in a chair or lay down, now the cough sounds like a chest infection, this chest/throat infection sound stops if I sit up. To my knowledge I haven’t lost any weight, although to be honest I don’t check my weight so have no guide. I also get pains occasionally in the centre of my chest under my breast bone.
Now still stuffed up but cough has gotten worse can't sleep at night as when I lay down I am choking from my cough and when awake cough will not stop once i start, but it is making me gag and get sick every time i am coughing.
this happens every hour or so during the day and night. the nights are worst because when i lay back i drain. i cant sleep at nights for this and cant be around people for grossing them out with the coughing and blowing and spitting up. not to mention im in school. im soooooooo frustrated.
There are many causes for a chronic cough (more then 3 months). The three main ones are asthma, GERD and post nasal drip. The best thing you can do is visit our doctor, describe your symptoms, and see what tests are ordered. Sometimes you will be given a trial drug for a few weeks to see if your symptoms clear up. It takes a bit to get to the root cause as it can be hard to distinguish where the root of the cause is located.
The strange part is the my nose is running during the day when I am active and busy but as soon as I lay down my nose dries up which stops the coughing. What can this be? I can handle the runny nose but the coughing is what is frustrating because it tiers me out. Any suggestions?
I've been there and done that. These kids cough at night because when they lay down their chest/lungs are effected by gravity differently than when they are up and about. If my doctor thought allergies and sinus was NOTHING, I would be looking for a new doctor. Allergy kids have many issues.
It began in 1976 and re occurs every 5 to 6 years. I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out.
He would cough, then swallow the mucus until he would regurgitate it in mass. It was terrible and I considered putting him down. He was drowning in mucus. Again out of desperation, I put him back on Prednisone, 5mg twice a day and his cough returned to a dry hacking, with nearly every breath, but brief periods of calm. He's exhausted from coughing though.
I don't want to cough up stuff everywhere I go; I can't even sleep comfortably because I can't lay down long enough to not feel like coughing something up. Would nasal sprays help? Allergy medication? Decongestants, gargling salt water, etc? If you know a remedy that works please tell me. I don't care if I have to drink vinegar straight or run five miles everyday; if there's anything I can do to end this problem for good I'll do it.
strong smells like air freshners, de oderants, dirty nappies, dog food, anything can set me of in a blind panic of coughing,, This has progressively gotten worse over the years, ive had all the usual chest xrays etc etc, nothing shows up... i do know thta when i lay in bed at nights im very phlemy and constantly find myself having to clear my throat....
I used to cry and be debilitated from the pain. All I could do was lay down. It isn't fibromyalgia. I do not meet the criteria. It doesn't hurt to touch anywhere. I cannot think of any other symptoms, but, when I write this, I think to myself, I am one tough old biddy for putting up with all of this. I still play on the floor with my grandkids. These pain attacks take less than 5 minutes to become fully locked and loaded. I know it the second it begins and have gotten quite used to it.
