Coughing up white phlegm

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing up white phlegm

coughing

Doctors say im ashmatic which is fine but one thing they cannot explain is why I've coughing out phlegm non stop for the past two month. Its not bloody, but thick and green sometimes white and foam like. My chest also feels tight everytime i cough. I use the sprays and all but this problem is permanently there.
It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough.
I have been coughing up phlegm daily for around 7 years. I've tried antibiotics several times without any success. I've had x-rays and mri scans but nothing showed up. Around 18 months ago my voice started to change. I was then prescribed omeprazole 20 mg capsules which make a slight difference and my voice returned to normal. But I still have to tap my chest and often have to get someone to hit my back to dislodge the phlegm which is milky white/ beige globules and quite a lot of it.
I have always coughed up brown flecks in my phlegm. But now, I have been coughing up dark grey after having some chronically infected teeth pulled. Could this be a result of the local anesthetic injections, or a worsening of the copd? I can only get rid of bronchitis for about a month before it comes back every time. Antibiotics (doxicycline) seem to have the inside of my mouth raw, with white patches on my tongue and a few white blisters in mouth, also. Now I'm on Penicillin for the teeth.
I've been expelling a white frothy substance from my lungs quite constantly from day one since I quit. However, today i'am coughing up something else. Its encased in the phlegm very small pebble like balls that are dark in color. A lot of it seems to be coming up. Is this a sign of COPD or something worse? And or is this normal for a person who has quit smoking, if so, when should I go get this checked out if it doesnt stop within the next 2-3 weeks?
I cough fairly regularly producing phlegm - one morning it can be green and thick and my chest feels congested and the next it's more white phlegm and I feel more normal. What's up? In the past I would get a sinus infection, take my antibiotics and it clears. I have avoided the treatment but maybe I should do it anyway as a precaution. Is that wise?
I too have been having coughing attacks where I cough until I vomit. I am on acid reflux meds and nasal spray to help postnasal drip. This has been going on for about 2 months. I had this before about 3 years ago. The dr. tells me there is nothing they can do about it. It's really bad in the fact I can't go anywhere without having facial tissue and a sack or something to vomit in, cause I never know when I'll have an attack. Usually I cough up a lot of phlegm, but sometimes I actually vomit.
did you cough up thick mucus or thinner mucus resembling saliva? or was it saliva that you've actually coughed up? any phlegm you feel like coughing/stuck in chest, when you lie down after a while? cough/phlegm worse in the morning?
hi my dad constantly spits up white sticky phlegm all day, every day! He will not go and see a doctor but he also finds it very hard to breathe. he did used to smoke and stopped almost a year ago and this has been happening since then. She is sitting on my lap right now wheezing. She has been to the vet twice in the past 3 weeks for coughing up phlegm (white and some green) she coughs worse in the mornings, even just running down the hall or when she gets excited. Some days are worse than others sometimes she doesn't even need a reason to cough. She was put on 10 days of doxycyclin now she is one amoxocilin and has been for 3 days now.
then see if she has sinus drainage, some small children kinda throw it up instead of coughing it up like adults, if so, try using some OTC meds to dry the secretions up.
I have a cold, am not a smoker but am coughing up blood in my phlegm.
Last night I brought up some that was all red. I only started coughing after the blood was found in my phlegm, so what could possibly cause this?
For the past week the cough has led to nosebleeds, at least once a day, and vomiting, but only the once. The cough produces white-ish phlegm and a lot of spit. It is hard to breathe whilst getting rid of the spit. During the night I wake up once or twice to cough and this often leaves me dry heaving. I went to the doctors last week but they could not find a cause. What is causing this and what can help?
I have been keeping a journal and recording the times and amounts of phlegm. Most days were 3-6 times a day she expelled phlegm. After 3 wk elimination diet of wheat and dairy, expells phlegm 1-3 times a day so there is an improvement. She clears her throat and sound raspy a lot. She will cough phlegm at dif times of the day. Sinus xrays normal, no ear problems. Sneezes 1-3X almost every morn. Protonix for 3 weeks to see if GERD. Added a dry cough to prod. cough during this period.
My 9 year old daughter has coughed up phlegm for the past 5 years. Sometimes white, clear, yellow. I started keeping a journal and realized she was doing this 3-6 times everyday. at the allergist, she only tested positve to dust mites, dogs and cockroached. She was negative to foods including dairy and wheat. I went ahead and did a 3 week elimination diet of diary and wheat. By the end of it, she was coughing up phlegm 1-2 times for day. This may be a lung issue and not an allergy issue.
I tried running one lap of the track and shortly there after I started coughing. Throughout that night and that next day I was coughing up yellow phlegm. I'm not sure what this means, but I really don't want to go to the doctors and waste my money. They'll just give me some nose spray, inhalers and send me on my way. If anyone can help please feel free to email me at tes_scott***@**** Thank you. Good Luck Everyone!
) Zertin (through a friend's recommendation) which was medication for acute bronchitis though I was only 75% sure that my condition was even bronchitis. But since then my phlegm has cleared up to a normal-looking white and I no longer cough nor feel the urge to. But now my problem is this: a week after medication, I constantly feel the presence of sticky phlegm in the back of my throat.
Help!!My husband is constantly spitting up phlegm; a whitish egg white color and snotty. He tells me he has a cold. I don't believe him. He is also one that does not go to a doctor. He says they can't help him, he will take care of it. He has lost weight and now I can see his ribs. He is constantly tired and all he does is sleep, has no appetite. He drinks 1/2 cup of coffee a day. Alcohol, constant and it's a problem. From what I have read, he has some of the symptoms of COPD. He also smokes.
I only drink one cup of coffee a day and when I drink alcohol it's only white wine or vodka. For me beer real brings up the phlegm in the throat. - DO NOT eat 4 hours before going to bed. Since I simultaneously did all these at once I'm not too sure if any work better than he others but together it seems to be helping so far.
If I dont hack up the phlegm I get ill to my stomach. I can feel the phlegm just sitting there, becoming a larger amount to spit out. I've never sought out any doctor over this matter. Thought it would help me to go online and find out if others have this problem. Many foods and drinks can irritate the problem. Sometimes I chew gum - it only cures the situation for a short time. And some gums don't work at all.
I have been getting over a recent bout of bronchitis where I was prescribed Augmentin (I am on Day 6) and Prednisone short burst (finished 2 days ago) I am still coughing quite bad but the fever has broke... but as of yesterday the phlegm/mucus I am coughing up tastes extremely salty. I have not been using any type of saline spray, or gargling with salt water, so I know this is not the reason. Is it the antibiotics causing this? Or is there another reason?
Hi, I recently quit smoking when I became sick back in October, and have been sick on and off to this date. I have been a smoker of both cigarettes and cannibis for years, and my father died of lung cancer in 97. Around Thanksgiving I developed a hacking cough and produced fresh blood in my phlegm.
Every single day, from when I wake up to the time I go to bed (if I can get sleep), I am constantly coughing or clearing my throat. The phlegm is usually white, sometimes with a bit of yellow. It is almost always extremely thick and a large amount. Sometimes in the afternoon or night, the phlegm is stringy and chokes me. There are some days that I cough up phlegm about every 5 minutes.
ThI have not felt sick again but every now and then I cough up some clear phlegm with brown spots. I haven't had a real cough and mostly the phlegm is white or clear. I do seem to have some occasional chest pain but can't tell if it's a muscle pain or something in my lungs. I have allergies(take claritin D)I also Have GERD and have not been taking anything for it. I was wheezing when it first came about but that has pretty much gone away. I don't have any coughing fits at all.
It is the worst in the morning, and all the times I've noticed the blood it has been in the morning. I still have the brownish phlegm (mostly streaks/spots of it, surronded by clear/white mucus, it looks like **** from smoking). My chest has never felt sore or tight through this whole thing. Being the hypochondriac that I am, I went to the immediate care center by my house this morning as a reassurance, and the doctor told me the same thing.
