coughing

I stopped smoking 2 weeks ago and the last week I have been coughing up brown phlegm. I was a smoker for 38 years. Is that normal?
( usually gets better as the day progresses
The cold eventually went away, but since then I have been consistently coughing up clear phlegm 10-20 times a day. Usually, it's just small amounts, and I cough it up to try and clear my lungs and throat. I went to my doctor about a month ago and he performed a lung function breathing test and checked my blood oxygen levels and said that everything was normal. So he prescribed Nasonex which I have been taking for about a week, but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference.
I have been coughing up thick clear phlegm speckled with gray. Not constantly, but a few times a day. I was diagnosed as a child with post nasal drip and I live in an area notorious for causing allergies. I do experience sinus congestion fairly regularly. For the last several months, my right lung seems sore or tight when I take deep breaths, but it improves almost entirely when I exercise.
I've been expelling a white frothy substance from my lungs quite constantly from day one since I quit. However, today i'am coughing up something else. Its encased in the phlegm very small pebble like balls that are dark in color. A lot of it seems to be coming up. Is this a sign of COPD or something worse? And or is this normal for a person who has quit smoking, if so, when should I go get this checked out if it doesnt stop within the next 2-3 weeks?
Hi not sure if anyone will know this but worth a try, i have smoked for 41 years mostly roll ups with no filters or anything, but about 3 plus years ago i started putting filters in and after a few months started coughing up green phlegm i asked the doctor he just said getting older and smoking, Some days it seems worse than others its really strange, i don't smoke load about 15 a day but there dead thin and i only smoke half at a time.
This was at its worse at night, and frequently woke me up in the early hours when I had to stand up or sit upright to breathe. There was no release of phlegm attached to these symptoms. So I visited my local Doctor (General Practitioner - GP) who - based on my age, smoking history (equivalent to 50+ pack years), symptoms, and physical examination - suspected Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and probably caused by Emphysema brought on by smoking. I have no history of Bronchitis or Asthma.
For a long time now, I have been coughing up thick gooey phlegm. In the phlegm, I also seem to cough up crusty stuff from the preforation. It is driving me crazy and my ENT doesn't have any long term solutions. Should I go for more testing, is there something else happening??
did you cough up thick mucus or thinner mucus resembling saliva? or was it saliva that you've actually coughed up? any phlegm you feel like coughing/stuck in chest, when you lie down after a while? cough/phlegm worse in the morning?
However it sounds like you have more blood than phlegm. Sometimes coughed up blood can come from the nose, rather than the lungs. When this happens there is usually a nosebleed also. You need to have a thorough physical exam by your doctor. A chest x-ray may also be needed. Only then will the cause of the bright red blood and the best treatment be known.
She is sitting on my lap right now wheezing. She has been to the vet twice in the past 3 weeks for coughing up phlegm (white and some green) she coughs worse in the mornings, even just running down the hall or when she gets excited. Some days are worse than others sometimes she doesn't even need a reason to cough. She was put on 10 days of doxycyclin now she is one amoxocilin and has been for 3 days now.
I have not simple, it will go away, notion about blood being coughed up from the lungs, sounds serious to me. The fact you can sleep is good, I think.
For some six weeks now I have experienced excess phlegm which slides down the back of my throatinto my lungs . As a result of this, I am continously coughing in order to clear my chest The Muscus is from my sinus and even though I have used "salt water" sprays,,,"Superfed tablets ..and Betnasol Drops as recommended by an ENT specialist and sprays I do not seem to get any relief at all.
How do doctors tell whether blood-streaked phlegm is from lungs or from stomach? If it is from stomach, what could the problems be? Could a barely-bleeding gum area the night before that appears to have stopped, be the source of the blood in phlegm? In my case, there is no coughing involved to get the phlegm out, I have not had a persistent cough. I just try to pull it up, and it seems to be emanating from the top of stomach area. Thank you.
I don't know if it is a faulty value, but it is something that is not functioning properely from my throat are esophagus, larynx closing of the epiglottis on down to my stomach, then causing secreation from my lungs to come up, as it greenish and a lot of mucus. This is not a normal reflex don't try and tell yourself this is normal. It causes continue stress to your heart and lungs. How many times can you cough on and on, gag and throw up.
Such phlegm easily comes out after I wake up from sleeping. At other times, I have to summon (pull out phlegm) repeatedly and the blood assocoated or the rusty would show up in the fourth or fifth call. I have burning pain on my ribs to the right and left of what is called "infrasternal notch" (where gastritis pain is usually felt). The pain goes to the middle of my right and left ribs, and even to the back side of my ribs. "complete" blood test turned normal.
I'm not having any trouble breathing. Occasionally I cough it up from my lungs but it's mostly in my throat. Somedays it's light and other days heavy. It tends to get heavy after I eat. Sometimes it's difficult to clear my throat, I have to let it build up to clear it out. There isn't any color to it. I don't smoke. I'm not in any pain. I've tried antihistamines, decongestants, vic's rub and nothing seems to work. Sometimes I can clear my throat and it will stop for a few hours.
Phlegm mixed with some blood could be due to irritation of the nose, sinuses, or lungs. Swallowing this blood will cause it to end up in your stool. On the other hand if you are coughing up blood and not blood-streaked phlegm, you should be seen on an emergency basis. For blood to be found in the stool, it must either originate in your digestive tract, or be swallowed in large quantities from another source.
For about the last month whenever phlegm comes up there is blood in it. It ranges from quite a bit to just streaks. I know this sounds silly but i have a phobia of going to the doctors. I've convinced myself if i go she's just going to tell me i have lung cancer and i would rather not know that!! Does anyone know if blood in phlegm can mean anything else but cancer?? I am pretty worried, but too chicken to get my butt to the doctors. Any comments would be appreciated.
My nose is stuffed up on one side and there is clear and yellow phlegm present. I feel like my cough is coming from either my throat or deep in my chest cavity. I can breath fine when I'm not having a coughing fit, never smoked, normal appetite, no pressure or pain in chest, and no sore throat present at the time. If you have any ideas or insight on what may be going on, comments would be appreciated. Thank you.
Later on in life she used had physio to release the build up of phlegm. Is it possible I might have inherited the same condition or am I just barking up the wrong tree.
coughing phlegm from lungs for the past six months, have taken antibiotics with no results, did take predrisone together with SPIRIVA 18 mcg and ADVAIR 500/50 for the past month. Still coughing up phlegm and have limited lung capacity. Any suggestions comments.
It is unclear what your doctor means by x-ray findings of "phlegm in my lungs". Green phlegm is always abnormal. You do not have to live with this condition. Green phlegm is not seen with asthma, although discolored mucus plugs can sometimes be seen with asthma. Also green phlegm is not a function of your age and the environment. Besides, you are still young.

It is unlikely that the problem you are describing is coming from your lungs. With that type and amount of mucus in your lungs, you would be coughing and having significant breathing problems, particularly during the night. It is much more likely that this is from your upper airways, and probably the sinuses. It may or may not have anything to do with an infection.
i have had a lot of phlegm since i started smoking again, but there are also occasions when i hack up a loogie and there are little spots of blood in it- sometimes just blood and no phlegm, there's no pain it just comes up. i know it's probably from smoking cigarettes but i was also bulimic for 2years and still do it occasionally and i know that also causes throatbleeding? my question is do you think this is from the "fiber glass" that is supposedly in menthol cigarettes? vomiting?
