Common Questions and Answers about Coughing up mucus for weeks

coughing

For the past 4 years I have been coughing up clear jelly like Mucus Balls. I have been a smoker for 8 years, and I have Asthma. I wake up in the morning and in the middle of the night coughing up a lot of the little mucus balls. It happens a little bit through out the day. Sometimes they are balls and sometimes they are like a hair, but made of mucus. I am very scared and do not have health insurance. I am 25, and thought I was pretty healthy. Please someone, HELP!
All pet scans are clear and x-rays clear still I have a cough that sometimes is that of a heavy smoker. Coughing brings up clear mucus. Other than this cough I feel great. Any suggestions on how to take care of the cough?

I was coughing up foamy white mucus for 3 weeks and looked on this site for answers. Emergency room test later showed WHOOPING COUGH. Pertussis — commonly called whooping cough (/ˈhuːpɪŋ kɒf/ or /ˈhwuːpɪŋ kɒf/) — is a highly contagious bacterial disease caused by Bordetella pertussis which is found in the mouth, nose and the throat of an infected person. In some countries, this disease is called the 100 days' cough or cough of 100 days.
Since we are talking about coughing. I had a few questions of my own. I have had issues coughing for the past 4-5 years. I caught constantly. Sometimes it makes my headache worse but sometimes I don't have a headache so it doesn't bother me. I do have sinus disease as per my MRI. So that explains the post nasal drip. I always have problems coughing whenever I am near or around water. For example I cough so much in the shower that sometimes it will make me throw up or gag.
I might not cough all day, then it hits me. I do feel like I have some mucus I want to cough up after coughing. At times, a cold or warm drink seems to bring it on or just walking into air conditioning. My right nostril seems clear, a little congestion in the left. Any thoughts?
for the last 3 weeks i have been coughing up mucus. its a yellowy colour. i feel perfectly fine physically except for the coughing. i have asthma and allergies to dust and cats, both of which i live with. but i have been taking my asthma meds daily to keep it under control and havent had any attacks. up until recently i didnt used to take my inhalors all that often. mostly only when i needed it, but living with a smoker, dust and a cat i thought i should take better care of my asthma.
have had three episodes of coughing up blood in the past 3 weeks or so, two after exercise and once because of an athma attack. I had a chest x-ray after the first two incidents from exercising that showed hyperinflation (despite the fact my peak flow was 530, my best is 550 and my chest was clear). I was told to take a week off of training, and then see if it happened again. I had a bad attack Monday night and coughed up some bloody mucus after two nebulizer treatments.

As you have had the persistent cough now for 3 weeks or so, I suggest you make an appointment to see your doctor to examine your throat and lungs and do a lung function test. If the doctor feels your cough is as a result of a bacterial infection, he will prescribe an antibiotic for you. Having a cough is the body's natural way of trying to get rid of an irritant, whether this is a virus or a bacterial, dust particles, irritation by smoke and fumes etc.
I have had the same cough for several years. It's always after I eat. I've been to all kinds of doctors and have tried all kinds of medicines but the only thing that ever helped me was Prednisone. The problem is that it's a steroid and doctors don't like to give it because it has side effects, but I can take it for 7 days and then I'm good for a couple of months with absolutely no coughing. When it starts again I take it for another week.

mucus in my throat (it might last many months) and combined with a coughing (it will last again 3 months?). How hard my life is? I hate Mucus and/or coughing. Could you give me some ideas or encouragement? Kind regards.
These seem to aid in keeping the mucus thin in the esphagus, but does anyone have a quick fix for when there is a mucus plug trapped in the treachea that she can't cough up due to her weak cough from her one working vocal cord and therefore only 30% of her airway. I realize that putting the treach back in is the reasonable and easy anwser...however it is a quality of life issue and we are trying whatever we can first and we will succumb to that as her last result.
I have been given every kind of pill, inhaler and nose spray but nothing helps. I cough up mucusand sometimes throw up mucus. My throat hurts from coughing and sometimes my chest. I have had chest exrays and cat scans and cameras down my nose.
I have had a cough for 3-4 months and i have been coughing up flegm. For about a couple of weeks, i have been having pain in my ribs (right side) so i need to know if I need to get this checked out or it could be something serious and should go to the ER. Thanks.
My brother has an intense cough. He has had it for about 3 weeks and it is not getting any better. The doctor prescribed an inhaler and certain cough medicines but nothing is working. It has gotten to the point where by the end of one of my brother's coughing "attacks" he is in tears and feels as though he is going to be sick. It's the worst in the morning and at night. It is less painful when he is at school in class, but as soon as he goes outside for lunch it gets worse again.
Hi, How are you? Chronic cough is typically defined as a cough that persists for longer than 8 weeks. This is usually a symptom and not a disease. This could be due to post nasal drip which is mucus accumulation in the back of the nose and throat, excessive or thick secretions, or impairment in the normal clearance of mucus from the nose and throat. Try to avoid the nasal irritants such as cigarette smoke, perfume, aerosol sprays, smoke, smog and car exhaust.
It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough.
For the past two and a half weeks I have had a cough. For the first week or so it was just a small cough, then it developed into coughing fits. For the past week the cough has led to nosebleeds, at least once a day, and vomiting, but only the once. The cough produces white-ish phlegm and a lot of spit. It is hard to breathe whilst getting rid of the spit. During the night I wake up once or twice to cough and this often leaves me dry heaving.
In December I got a very bad cold and I also started having problems with my siatic nerve in my back and had to take advil for about 4-5 weeks before that went away. I have been cold free since about the first of the year now except my coughing bouts have not stopped, I am fine most of the time but all of a sudden I will start coughing. Mostly it starts in the evening, generally after supper but I have also started coughing in the morning or during the day.
We did this for one week with worsening results. We both wake up coughing, gasping for air and plainly just CAN'T BREATH. I took the baby to the ER where they said her lungs sounded fine (triage nurse, er nurse and the doctor). Yes, she was fine at that time, but they acted like I was bringing her in for no reason, said she had an ear infection, gave us some amoxicillin and sent us home. I went to the dr. two times. The first time she said she thought I had bronchitis, gave me augmentin.
Here I sit 39 wks 2 days pregnant and SOOO ready to have this baby. I've been having TONS of mucus discharge but unfortunately it's coming from the WRONG end.....yup...sinuses...All day and all night, constantly running down the back of my throat gagging me, making me puke, making my throat sore...driving me absolutely nuts.
My dog has a cough and alot of white mucus is now coming up he is eating fine and staying hydrated, I am just looking for some over the counter meds to help him feel better till I can get him to the vet.
Since then I have felt unwell, with daily coughing up mucus. Sometimes it is clear, sometimes light yellow, or dark yellow. More mucus in the mornings and it can wake me up at night. I have been tested for asthma and allergies and don't have either. Lung function tests are normal. CT scan was normal. On Advair 500- 2x per day, Atrovent, Salbutamol 4x per day, and Allegra 24 as per doctors orders.
