coughing

Avatar f tn I have a 15 yr old cocker spaniel who has started coughing or hacking. She has no other distressess. She is still active to a point, happy and eager to chase small animals. She only coughes when she lays down. Is she developing a heart condition?
Avatar f tn NO! Especially at that age. Stay away from the cats and if it were my grandchild? I would get rid of the cat. Dogs can sometimes be worse than cats too. Now that I am older I will take an antihistamine and I'm usually okay if I don't stay too long, but as an adult I know the cues and know when to leave. A four year old is much too young. I remember spending summer weekends at my friends house and being up ALL night long coughing and coughing and coughing. I'm allergic to dogs!
Avatar m tn My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
Avatar f tn s rather common in dogs! Dogs can live many ,many years on medications just like humans can.....Meds. to improve function of the heart & also lasix to clear fluid from the lungs......An EKG or ECG can detect what part of the heart is having a problem.....They usually run around $100.....Some Vets will suggest this test, some will not...They will just go ahead and treat... Next- Kennel Cough- This is a virus and antibiotics will do nothing.....
Avatar f tn In the last few weeks, my toy poddle, age 14, has had sudden dizzy spells where he becomes unbalance and will start to sway from side to side. During these spells, he tries to walk it off, but he just looks like his walking drunk. I'm really concerned because you can see him trying to shake these spells off but he can't. The spells last about 10 seconds. Right before one of this happens he usually starts coughing. I don't know if the coughing and dizzy spells are related.
Avatar m tn Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me... I have two dogs, they are both 11 yrs old and have been healthy their entire lives. About a month ago, one of them began coughing- a dry hacking cough that comes on suddenly or after what seems like some difficulty breathing. She is a jack russell terrier normally around 20lbs and has gained about 3.5 lbs in the past couple months, which I'm not sure has anything to do with her cough.
Avatar m tn Kennel cough is a very common condition and causes a dry hacking cough as it causes inflammation and even ulcers in the upper airway. I normally responds well to antibiotics and you've tried two. Hydrocodone also helps but not in this case. I would recommend a scope (tracheoscopy) and perhaps a tracheal lavage.
Avatar f tn The breath might be slightly cooler, but this is still approximately 30 degrees higher than your room temperature. Air conditioned room air is also very dry. Since your dog has been coughing up fluid from his lungs this additional moisture in his breath is obviously easier to see. Additionally, Cushing's Syndrome causes increased panting.
Avatar f tn My male chow dog was 4 maybe 5 years old and died this morning . He was coughing up blood and peeing blood and was weak and breathing heavy and fast . But he didnt start this until recently and it was too late to do anything .How did my dog die ?
Avatar n tn My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.
3181540 tn?1344550924 Reasons for Coughing: OK, For starters, you need to rule out Heart Problems....The xray will not only show the heart, but also the lungs...This is important.... With Heart Disease, the weak heart cannot pump as well...Fluid builds into the lungs causing the cough..The cough is usually MOIST like they're choking on congestion...Actually, they are...The cough is worse in the mornings & during periods of running, playing & excitement....Fluid will show in an xray.....
Avatar f tn She does have a heart condition but this is not the cause. She was coughing like a goose on Tues. Vet gave her Termeril P. She took that and it did reduce the coughing. But, she stopped eating on Thurs. Sat. I got up and made her a filet mignon which is her favorite. She won't eat. I took her to the vet again but my usual vet was not there and I saw the other one. This vet said she has acid reflux. He gave her a shot of Ampacillian, Cerenia and Pepcid AC.
Avatar m tn No you can't use human toothpaste for dogs. I think there's something in it which is toxic for dogs. The best toothpaste I've found is "Virbac" I think it's made in Germany, and is available where I live in England. It doesn't need rinsing, which so I've heard, some of them do. It contains enzymes which work on plaque bacteria and keep the gums healthy. I don't know if you can get that where you live?
1171933 tn?1263476758 My Chihuahua has severe bouts of Coughing, Wheezing, Choking, & Breathing problems during the night. It seems to be a little bit better in the daytime. I've had him to Vet's, but after spending $1,000 + he has not changed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?
Avatar f tn This is very common and is a result of your vagus nerve being stimulated by the coughing resulting in a sudden drop in blood pressure as it temporarily causes your heart to pump less efficiently causing less blood to go to your brain. The drop in BP causes your symptom of feeling faint, it is very common and completely normal.
415109 tn?1304890182 We have a 9 yr old Low Chen who for the past 2 weeks has been hacking and coughing almost constantly. He did have valley fever 2 years ago and was treated successfully and his titer is negative. He coughs but doesn't cough anything up-just sounds like he is going to choke or get something out. sometimes rubbing his throat gently and calming him down will make it quit but as soon as you stop he starts again. He is in otherwise good health.

Avatar n tn I have been coughing for about 7 years. I have been to 3 doctors and been on meds for post nasal drip, asthma. I had my thyroid out in Oct; because it was enlarged and closing up my trachia but that didn't help. Have had xrays and cat scans and everything looks good. It seems to coming from my throat area. sometimes i cough so hard that i almost pass out. I'm really at wits end. Any suggestions?
Avatar n tn We found out about the cause when our friends got an air purifier and their dogs all started coughing within a week of them starting to use it, took it out of the house and all the dogs STOPPED coughing. I wish there was a way to get this info out to everybody.
Avatar f tn There are many human foods that are completely unsuitable for dogs, and one of the many reasons why dogs become ill is because of scraps of human food that is given to dogs. While we are not susceptible to these toxins, dogs are, as they have completely different digestive systems. Please take a look at my article on this subject so you don't give these foods by mistake. http://www.infobarrel.
Avatar n tn My dog has been coughing every 2-3 hours as if hes trying to loosen something in his throat. Will it pass?Should I take him to the Vet?
Avatar f tn Because my dog interacts with other dogs a lot, when he developed a "cough" I immediately took him to the vet. He had no fever, is eating and drinking normally and his activity level is normal - he doesn't at all act like a sick dog. I have kept him away from other dogs to avoid getting them sick. The vet diagnosed him with kennel cough and put him on Doxycycline 100 mg - he takes 1 1/2 pills twice a day. He started them on Tuesday. He has also had a Bordetella vaccine.
Avatar n tn Yesterday, my dane kept coughing/gagging. He would cough real hard, like he had something stuff in his throat. We looked in his throat as far as we could, and didn't see anything. Then, earlier today, he ate and was fine. He played a little with my husband, and hasn't acted weird. Then, a few hours ago, he ate again, and maybe 30-45 minutes later, he threw up his food. Some kinda looked digested, but maybe it was just chewed up.
