My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. I wasn't sure if this was some of his problem from the stuff they give him or what, but he does it alot especially at night.
My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
I tried taking robitussin dm because thats what my doctor recommended me to take,but its just not helping..have any of you ladies tried a home remedy that worked? I cant sleep and my stomach hurts from all my coughing.
I'd try a hairball remedy to start. Usually a dry hack is a sign of a fur ball issue. You won't always see the end product, often cats will swallow that result.
any kind of sharp noises, coughing ! sent her into a frenzy. . I bought rescue remedy. No results. I bought on herbal site other calming meds $$$.. no ... nothing I tried helped at all. the worst thing happened was I gave her a sedative for a 4 hour trip called acepromazine. and my dog had a seizure and it was in the car and I almost crashed. I thought she was dead. she never had a seizure in her life.

My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.
My 8 year old cat recently started coughing, not the ususal hair ball stuff, and I can hear him breath. His lung sound "wet" . I started giving him some over the counter hairball remedy and think he may have aspirated some liquid. Today is Sunday. My vet is not open today but will take him to emergency if I have to. On about Page 4 is a post entitled, "My dog has been coughing for..." and it's an old post. HIS dog, it turns out, did eat some burrs that got caught in his fur... and MY dog has been coughing and he also ate some burrs. Since it was an old post, he did not come back about it.
How long has your dog been taking the phenobarbital...? If the pheno is a new med for your dog, maybe the dosage needs to be adjusted.
As far as the rescue remedy goes....if you think it might be doing some harm, or possibly interacting with the pheno...then by all means stop giving it.
If you want to try something natural to help calm him, just try Lavender essential oil...put a drop or two on his collar...or rub a drop or two on his chest.
As for the heart murmur, the treatment depends on exactly what type of heart defect is causing the murmur. Since your vet predicted that the dog would start coughing, and the dog has in fact started coughing, I take it that it is not a benign murmur. In my nonprofessional opinion, most likely the murmur is due to valve disease, and the cough is a symptom of congestive heart failure.
